Chapter 8 | I Can Show You A Whole New World

I showed up at work a littler earlier than I normally do. For a few reasons, actually. The most important being, I wanted to ask Devin to stay with me tonight. I'm not sure if he'll be able to or be up to it. His boyfriend, if he's as controlling as Ange and Chris made it sound, probably wouldn't like him working overtime. He's also worked a full eight hour shift today. I'd understand if he was tired and just wanted to go home to his bed. If fate is on my side, Devin can stay with me. When is fate ever with me though?

My second reason for coming in early; I needed to check out the new exhibit before it becomes animated. I want to see what kind of displays the new additions are in. Hopefully, that fucking Wendigo will be behind glass. I didn't do the research Angelo told me to. Whoops. Gannondorf, Dr. Eggman, and Bowser are all from video games meant for kids. They can't be that bad, right? The Portal villains are computers, and the characters from Five Nights At Freddy's are animatronics. I should be able to just turn them off, right? That would only leave me with the Big Daddy and the Wendigo to worry about.

Thirdly, my dumb bitch ex wanted to go out to dinner tonight and I used work as an excuse. I knew if I saw her in person, she'd bat her eyelashes, run her hand up my arm. She'd give me that look that I always fall for like an idiot. The last thing I need in my life right now is stupidly getting back together with her. I've done it enough times to know better.

There were a few stray people still in the museum. We'd be closing in about forty minutes. I walked up to the forth floor, which was currently being guarded by a day security guard. Ryan was his name. I've come to know him in passing because he's usually closing up when I arrive for my shift. He recognized me and let me into the exhibit. Boxes were being moved out as they had just finished setting up everything.

I smiled without even thinking when I saw Devin wondering around. He was admiring the new statues. Oh, if only he knew, they were far from statues. From what I understand, they have been coming to life even being in crates in the loading bay. Tonight, though, is the first day that they won't be drowning in packing peanuts. Even when they were in this lifeless state, they did look so real. Thankfully, the Wendigo was in a glass case.

Devin must be into video game culture, because he was loving looking at the details of every statue. I was loving looking at every detail of him. He had his dreaded hair pulled to one side, a long earing handing from the exposed side. A shorter leather jacket hugged his body on top of a shirt that said Haddonfield, IL est. 1978. Tight jeans ran along perfect legs, and damn did it make his ass look good.

Fuck, be a gentleman and stop looking at his ass. Lucky me, I broke my stare away from his bottom just as he turned around. That was close. He caught my eyes and smiled as me softly. Devin practically skipped over to me. He was pretty happy for someone that gets abused. I think being here renews his joy, then it gets sucked back out of him when he goes home.

"Hey." He beamed, "How are you liking the new job?"

"A lot," I replied, "So much so, I was actually wondering if you would be interested in staying a little while after we close? I discovered something really awesome here, that you can only see at night, and I want to show you."

Devin smiled initially, then lost his beautiful grin as reality set in. "I don't know if I can. My roommate might not like me getting home later..."

Chris walked up as he was talking. He set his hand on Devin's shoulder and said, "Tell him I asked you to do some overtime tonight helping with the new exhibit. Which, isn't actually a lie. Ricky could use some help with the new editions tonight and you know these characters the best out of any of the guides."

"Thanks, Chris." Devin softly spoke, then looked at me, "I guess I am staying."

"I look forward to getting to spend some time with you." I responded. My sights fell beyond him, looking at one of the statues. "Chris, can I talk to you for a second?" I asked, and Devin sweetly excused himself. I kept my voice low as I said, "Thank you for help with Devin, thank you for incasing the Wendigo, but what the fuck is that?"

He glanced back to where yet another Joker statue stood. This one looked so much grosser than any previous ones. Chris sighed and returned his eyes to mine. "Joker is out most popular villain. It was a last minute choice to add him, but I got a great deal on the statue. I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Just lock up this room for tonight and hope Joker doesn't give you any trouble."

"I'm not worried about him as much as I am that Wendigo. Are you sure that glass will keep him?" I asked.

"It's not normal glass. It's a lot tougher. It should hold, but if there's any trouble, you know who to go to. You've got an entire museum on your side, against one small exhibit. You'll be okay." He attempted to reassure me. "I've got to get home before dinner gets cold."

"Drive safe." I muttered as he walked away.

Chris waved goodbye, then disappeared out the exit. I know him and Angelo are busy planning their wedding on top of having this new exhibit released. They need their time together and I'm going to try my best not to interrupt it. I've been able to handle the rest of the museum, mostly. How hard could this be?

Devin sauntered over to me with a little smirk at his lips. He was so adorable, the way he kept his hands in his pockets and occasionally swayed his hips.

"C'mon, Bunny Boo, I've got to do a few things before my shift starts." I told him as I began to head out.

"Bunny Boo?" He questioned me with a small giggle.

I shrugged, flipping through my key ring. "I'm just trying out some new pet names. Do you not like it?"

"Hmm," He hummed, "It's cute, but I'm a little vicious to be a bunny."

I pulled down the gate that would seal the video game exhibit. As I leaned down to lock it, I replied, "There's evil bunnies. Didn't you ever see the Fairly Odd Parents movie?"

He snubbed his nose, "No, I saw the reviews and decided I didn't want my childhood butchered."

I laughed and stood back up. "Fair enough." I began to walk, him following. "How about- Nevermind."

"What?" Devin asked playfully, "C'mon, tell me."

"I was going to suggest princess as a nickname, but I realized you're more of a queen." I said, which was the honest truth.

"Damn right." He sassed me as we began to walk down the stairs. Devin snickered, "I'm kidding, by the way."

I glanced up at him. He was radiant. I replied, "I know you are. I'm not though. About you being beautiful, I mean. You are gorgeous."

He blushed and hid his eyes behind his hair as it fell in his face. "Thank you." Devin muttered.

Woah, was he actually shy? I would have never guessed. Usually he's so animated when he gives his tours, or when he talks about the characters he's so fond of. I kind of like the shyness. Being a man, my first thought of course was I wonder if he's shy in the bedroom. Something tells me he's not, though it would be cute if he was.

Devin walked with me all the way to the basement. We talked about little things along the way. Just our interests, our families, our life outside of work, ect. I learned he's a musician, which didn't surprise me at all. He's got such a creative nature to him. He's very close with his family, but I could have guessed that already. I remember one of the first interactions we had, he told me about how much he loves his littler siblings.

I did my usual routine of turning closing the air vents and turning off the water. I'm sure Devin assumed it was just to save money on the power and water bills. What's the point of running the whole building's worth where there's only two people here? Oh, if only he really knew. He'd find out soon enough. We continued to talk as I lead him up to the third floor. I locked up my office, seeing it was almost time.

"You ready to see that cool thing I was going to show you?" I asked him with a bit of a flirty gleam in my eyes.

"I guess." He briefly snickered, "I have no idea what it is so I'm not sure if I'll like it."

"You will." I replied cockily.

And yes, I got a look for saying that. He knew I had good intentions and let it go. I take it he doesn't like arrogance. Hopefully my pesimitic nature doesn't come off as being an asshole. Sometimes my sarcasm can do that as well. I really do like Devin and don't want to do anything to scare him off.

I lead him over the hall in which was had all the murderers. Just for safety, I locked up both sides this time. The last thing I need right down is Leatherface liking Devin's striking good looks as much as I do and running out here after him. We had about two minutes left once I closed up everything. I leaned against the gate in front of the masked murderers exhibit and waited.

"Have you ever seen Night At The Museum?" I spoke as I watched the seconds tick away on my watch.

"Yeah..." He dragged his voice. "Why?"

I held up my finger to tell him to wait a minute. Five, four, three, two, one. The magic that I can feel in my core washed over the entire building. You can't see it, but man can you feel it. In an instant, the statues and figures all came to life and began to move around. Devin looked at me for a moment to make sure he wasn't losing his mind. I smiled warmly to reassure him.

"We're the real life version." I said.

Devin set his hands against the gate, peering in to the characters he had dedicated his life to. His entire day, ever day, is filled with educating people about this culture. And that culture he loves so much was now alive in front of his eyes. He gawked, at a loss for words.

"Pretty neat, huh?" I asked lightheartedly.

He nodded slowly, "Yeah. How even-...?"

"The Mummy's tablet downstairs, just like in the movie. It brings everything to life. They take on the properties of their characters too. Like the super villains actually have their powers, and the ghosts are actually ghosts."

"This is amazing." Devin wisped.

I turned around to face the gate completely. Most the murderers weren't paying much attention to either of us. They were used to me by now and mostly just worried about hanging with each other.

"Hey, Michael?" I called over to him, "Come here." Myers stood up from where he was sitting and wondered over. "I'd like you to meet my friend, Devin. He's a big fan of yours."

Myers politely waved, which somehow came off sweet even though he had a huge knife in his hand. Devin's smile grew as he gawked in amazement. "H-Hi."

"Would you like to meet Sweeney?" I mused.

"Duuhh!" Devin replied.

I giggled and offered him my hand. He shyly took it and we began to walk downstairs. His hand in mine, he seemed like a perfect fit. So blissful, I almost forgot about the forth floor. After I take Devin to meet Sweeney, I have to go up there to make sure everything is alright. Those characters are getting to interact with each other for the first time. It could either be great, or a disaster.
