Chapter 16 | Showing the New Guy the Ropes

"Did Chris tell you anything about my routine?" I asked Ryan as we walked through the first floor.

"No, not really. He just told me to shadow you tonight to learn everything." He replied.

"At least you've got me. I didn't have anyone to teach me this shit when I started." I laughed, "First we have to go downstairs to turn off the water and the air."

He looked at me strangely, "It's like ten degrees out. Why would we turn off the air?"

"It'll make sense later. You actually don't notice the cold because you work up a sweat running around this place." I said.

"I-" He sighed, "Never mind. Okay."

Ryan was smart enough not to question it. He seems to have some brains. Let's hope there's confidence to him too. We were downstairs and did the usual. I did finally fix the light down here, by the way. It was out when I had my first night. It took forever to get maintenance to do shit about it though. Since I'm the only one here at night, it wasn't much of a concern to him.

As much as I wish I could start him off on the first floor, we had to close the vents in the video game exhibit. Ryan followed me up the multiple flights of stairs. I hurried into the exhibit and locked all the vents. There was also an air return that I had to lock. I glanced down at my watch. It was 9:59PM.

"Fuck, let's go." I grabbed his wrist and yanked him along as I rushed out of the exhibit.

"What's the hurry?" He asked as he tried to keep up.

I pushed him out into the hall. Then I jumped up and grabbed the gate. Just as I slammed it against the ground, I heard the Wendigo screech. GLaDOS made her beeping start up noises, the Five Nights characters' metal clanked as they awoke. Joker's laugh broke out through the room. I rushed to lock it up. Even if Joker is now in a cage, I don't trust that fuck.

Finally, I got it locked. I glanced over at Ryan to see he was ten shades paler. He stared inside, his eyes caught on the Wendigo that tried to scratch it's way out of it's glass.

"Honestly, you're doing better than me on my first night." I joked.

"What the actual fuck?" He spoke in a higher, scared voice.

"Ever seen Night At The Museum?" I asked.

"Yeah..."

I glanced back inside, watching the Big Daddy pick up his Little Sister. It's hard when they're not all bad, but Joker has to ruin it for everyone.

"We're the real version." I said, "The Mummy's tablet brings this place to life."

His large eyes were glued to the bizarre sight. "I can't decide if this is fucking amazing or fucking terrifying."

"...Both. You get over the fear eventually. These guys are new. They haven't adjusted to me or to the museum yet, so I have to lock them up. C'mon, I'll introduce you to everyone else." I began to walk and he followed. We passed by the wing that had the Rake in it. I could hear him rattling against his chains and remembered there was a vent I had to close in there. "Fuck." I sighed, "That is the one I still am terrified of. You might want to stay here."

"I know I should, but my natural curiosity will be the death of me." He replied.

I chuckled, "You and I are going to get along well."

He and I dared to walk into the almost finished exhibit. There was still some painting to be done in here. Other than that, the pedestals awaited their characters. The Rake was in the middle, fighting against his restraints desperately. He attempted to lung at us. I definitely flinched but not as bad as Ryan. I swear he jumped back ten feet.

I quickly closed the vents. Incase you're wondering, yes, I have to reopen them in the morning. It's a bitch but I'm not taking any chances with those goddamn animatronics.

"Do you have to lock every vent in the museum?" Ryan asked.

"Yeah, but this is the only floor I have to do it myself. On the other floors, the characters do it for me. I just check in to make sure they remember. They also like when I visit, so I try my best to see everyone." I explained.

We started to head to the second floor. I still had to lock my office. Then we'd head up to the third.

"You act like you're going to visit a bunch of grannies at the retirement home, the way you talk about them." He said.

I laughed, "You know, back when I first started, I used to joke how Angelo could walk in those exhibits like it was a petting zoo. You oddly get attached to these guys. The forth floor... That's a different story. Those characters are a lot different than these. They still have a lot of maturing to do, I guess."

I locked up my office fast. Then we went back up to the third floor. I tend to just close up the cafeteria and not worry about it. As long as the Gremlins stay behaved, I'm usually good. Their exhibit, where all the creatures are displayed, is where we headed first.

"I normally don't come in here long because the only ones in here that can talk can't even talk that well." I whispered to Ryan as we walked down the hall.

Some exhibits take up a whole hall like this one. Others only take up half a hall. This one was just so massive because it had everything from Frankenstein's Monster to the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth. Very few talk though because the majority are such mindless creatures. This was another one I preferred to close up. Who the fuck knows what those green things got going on in their heads.

As I pulled down the gate, I said, "Franky, you got the vents right?"

He gave me a thumbs up. Honestly, he was so stupid but lovable. I see him as very misunderstood. That's why he has a bride though. They understand each other. Undead love is stronger than living love. In my opinion, that is. We then headed to the east hall. This is where the vampires and clowns are.

"I can trust these guys, so I leave their exhibits open. There's actually very few that I close." I told Ryan.

"Have any of them ever tried to hurt you?" He asked.

"The Wendigo, which is why I lock him the fuck up. Myers did once too but that's because he didn't know who I was." I explained. Then I walked down the right side, where the vampires were. The one mainly in charge here was the leader of the Lost Boys, David. "Vents done?" I asked.

"Yeah!" He replied from the back.

"Alright, thanks. This is the new security guard, by the way. His name is Ryan."

Dwayne nodded his head my direction, "Where you goin'?"

"Nowhere. With the fourth floor expanding, I just needed an extra hand. That reminds me, new exhibit is going in next week. You guys know the drill. I'm not sure locking them up will help much though... A few of the new characters have teleportation powers."

"I'm startin' to feel like we should be getting pamphlets or somethin' for new additions." David replied.

"You and I both." I responded, "I've got a lot more to show Ryan. Have a good night, guys." They groaned their goodbyes as we turned around. I glanced over at him, "You don't have a problem with clowns, do you?"

"I'm not the biggest fan." He muttered.

"Somehow I just guessed that. I had, well, still have a problem with dolls. I've gotten past it enough to visit with them." I decided, since he doesn't like clowns, to cut this short. "Twisty!" I called for him, "Did you get the vents?"

"Yesh!" He slurred.

He was so pitiful and gross at the same time. Out of all the clowns, he was the nicest. Pennywise and Grundy can be a little hard to handle at times. The klowns from Killer Klowns From Outer Space are just... too weird for me. We kept moving along to the north hall, where the murderers all were. I've kind of missed Myers. Being around him reminds me of Devin.

"We have bit of a problem that not all the murderers get along. So, we switch off each night having one of the gates closed." I explained, "Last night the masked murderers were locked in, so it's the non masked guys turn." I closed down the gate and called inside, "Norman, you did vents, right?"

"Ah, almost forgot." He replied, "Thank you for the reminder."

"Is this still weird for you?" I asked Ryan.

"Little bit. I can't tell if it's getting better or worse."

"Yeah, I know that feeling." I snickered, "Hey, someone got the vents, right?"

"Yeah, boss!" Ghostface responded, "Hey, who's the new dude?"

"New security guy, Ryan. He'll be doing rounds with me from now on."

He gave a short nod. Myers walked over and just kind of stared at Ryan. Since he doesn't talk, he wasn't exactly going to greet him right now. Jason stood behind him and gave a little wave. It was a wave with a machete in his hand, so I'm sure it was not very friendly. He tries. I could tell Ryan was getting creeped the fuck out.

"I'm going to go bring him to meet everyone else, okay?" I said.

Myers just kind of... looked at me. That was acknowledgement, I think. I took a few steps back with Ryan. Then we turned back around and headed out. I'm still a little tense around them. Can you blame me?
