Chapter 4
A dead wish
"where the hell are we?!" Anne questioned in a panic knowing well none of us knew the answer to that.
The loud siren still screeched around us.
I don't know why but something about the loud siren just made my heart sink, as if my sixth sense was tingling, making shivers run down my spine.
"I don't know! The question is; what the hell are we suppose to do now with a storm on its way!" Lena cried out.
"Wait!" I yelled.
"Hear that?"
"I don't hear anything!"
"exactly"
"Why did it stop-"
"guys! Look!" Shawn got our attention and pointed upwards.
we all Looked up at the wide sky, A pool of starts stared back at us.
"what's this shit?! The sky's clear as ever! Why was there a whole ass tornado siren?!" Arthur asked with annoyance and confusion visible on his soft features.
"maybe they accidentally turned it on or something?" Anne answered or more like questioned.
"Okay... But what are we going to do now?" another question was asked, this time by Hayden.
"I don't know I can't even remember which direction did we come from?, I mean yea we came through that path,"
I said pointing at the way from which I and Hayden bumped into Lena.
"but still we've gotten too far away from the campsite."
"oh god! we're in deep shit! And it's all my fault" Anne said frustrated with her hands on her face.
"hey! It's not your fault! It's none of our fault. If Chad hadn't followed us and started the fight, then we wouldn't have to run in the first place" Shawn reassured her.
"hey, cmon let's try getting back to camp, let's go back to the way we came from," Hayden said, scanning the area.
we started walking back and just when I took my first step I was reminded of the burning pain on my lower back, a whimper escaped my lips.
"oh, shit! The wound!" Hayden rushed towards me.
"Let me have a look"
Arthur shined his flashlight on me for Hyden to observe the fresh cut and Slightly lifting my shirt he drew in a quick breath.
"Hayden? What is it? ...i-is it bad?" I asked somehow already knowing the answer.
"it's bad, it seems you fell on some sort of a dagger-like stump or something. It's deep, you can't walk for much longer in this state" he finished.
"But we can't take too long Hayden! We gotta go back now, just help me to walk" I protested.
"Jade he's right, we gotta do something about it first," Lena said.
"fine."
"here wait! I have a small first aid kit in my bag somewhere"
Arthur said and dug in his bag.
I was realizing now, everyone was wearing their bags, except for me and Hayden.
"here" Arthur handed the kit to Hayden.
"okay stand still I need to disinfect
the wound"
he dabbed a cotton ball on my raw skin. I drew in a sharp breath it felt like a thousand pins were being stabbed in my back, another wave of pain hitting me made me let out a whimper this time but the feeling soon faded as I felt soft material being placed on my skin.
"there...better now?
"yea"
"let's get goin-"
Our attention diverted to the sound of a twig snapping.
--now what the hell was that?!--
Everyone froze in their places once again and started at the spot from where the sound came, after staring at it for a few solid minutes we slightly relaxed.
"let's just get the hell outta here, I don't wanna stay here any longer," Anne said once again looking at the spot.
"yea cmon"
*:・*:・゚✧
Hours. It felt like we've been walking for hours but it was still dark. The faint pain in my back reminding me again and again of its presence.
"ugjh! We've been walking for ages! Where the hell are we!" Arthur screeched, running a hand through his hair, and fell down on his knees.
"hell, I'm tired!" he wailed once again.
"Arthur! Stop! Stop yelling" I said in a stern voice but kept it low.
"What?! Why? who's gonna possibly be out here to hear us?
"I-I don't know, just I don't think it's a good idea exposing ourselves out here."
"but don't we want someone to know we're here?"
"Do you really think someone's gonna be out there casually wandering around in the woods in the middle of the night and then hear us and decide to come to rescue us?" Shawn asked back sarcastically.
Anne suddenly spoke up "wait! We're so stupid! We just gotta call miss Trina and let her know we're lost!"
"B-But she will kill us once she finds out we went out in the middle of the night!" Lena tried stopping Anne.
"Lena! Are you seriously worried about her getting mad? We're stuck! God knows how long it'll take them to find us! It's better to get yelled at by her than to be stuck in some dark ass forest" I spoke in disbelief.
Anne got her phone out of her pocket and unlocked it But the glimmer of hope on her face soon died as her smile fell.
"no signal," she said, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"how's that possible?! We had it back at camp! Are we that deep in the forest" Shawn asked confused.
"Don't you think the loud siren had woken everyone else up too? Didn't they realize we are missing and also the dumbass and his friends who followed us? They would've called us by now...but they can't" I said dryly.
"but for how long do you think we're gonna sit like thi-" Arthur spoke again but was cut off.
"HELLO! HELP ME PLEASE! SOMEONE! ANYONE! PLEASE HELP ME!"
My mount went dry, a shiver running down my spine, heart racing.
We all stood there frozen, eyes wide. Everything went quiet again as we didn't just hear someone's cry for help seconds ago.
"t-that sounded...l-like one of Chad's friend" I spoke barely above a whisper, still looking in the direction of the scream.
"W-we gotta go help him!" Shawn started walking towards the path that would hopefully lead us to the boy who cried for help.
"wait! Shawn, we can't go, can't you see we're gonna get more lost!" Lena sprinted towards him, holding him by the arm.
"look around Lena we're already lost We can't just sit around while someone's wailing in pain out there, we've gotta help, we don't have time to waste! Gods know in what horrible state he must be! I'm going" he snapped.
"Shawn is right we have to help him" Hayden agreed.
After a minute of standing there, everyone started waking, and honestly how bad could it be? going to help someone, he probably fell and sprained his ankle or something.
But we were not ready for what we saw next.
What we saw next made me wish from the core of my soul that we should've just stayed, and hoped the guy's friends got him.
A nauseous feeling hurdled in the pit of my stomach, a shiver creeping down my spine.
The air around me seemed to get uncomfortably heavy it felt like the air stopped entering my lungs.
My mouth felt dry all of a sudden, my heart ready to burst apart, a scream would've escaped my lips but dismay seems to take over every single muscle in my body.
In front of us laid "a body" I don't think it can even be called a body anymore, seeing it wasn't even in its original intact state anymore.
pieces. there were pieces, of human flesh. Scattered everywhere, the color red painted the part of the forest where our eyes were laid, a faint metallic smell lingered in the atmosphere.
--Someone torn to shreds--
Falling back to reality, I drew in a deep breath my lungs finally getting the air that was unable to enter them.
Putting my hand on my mouth before it could let out a noise of terror. My body jolted, I looked next to me frightened as if I might be alone.
Hayden's grip on my hand tightened to the point where it might leave a bruise and my eyes met his.
His eyes were already bored into mine, they were filled with dread. He slowly lifted his finger to his lips
"s-shh"
With a very slow pace, he started walking towards Shawn and the others, I dared move my eyes from the spot as if whoever --whatever-- did this might leap at us anytime.
Shawn stood only a few steps away from us but in the loud silence, it seemed like it took us ages to get to him.
"S-Shawn? W-what now?" Anne whispered barely audible tears glistening in her eyes.
Shawn who's wide eyes were still glued to the bloody path said only one word that made the blood in our body run cold.
"r-run"
Talking a sharp turn we looked back before we could even move an inch, a siren, a very loud siren barked from our right, opposite of the agonizing scene.
"We must be close," Lena said looking in the direction of the siren. No one said a word after that. We all ran and ran towards the siren, hearts pounding in our chest ready to burst out.
After what felt like running for hours, the siren stopped.
"What? Why'd it stop?" Anne implored looking around.
"We've been following it for what seems like hours but it keeps getting further and further!" Arthur spoke for the first time since he was cut off by the scream, his pale skin looked like it was about to turn dead white.
We all stood in a circle, trying to catch our breath. All of a sudden Anne put a hand on her mouth and tears whelmed down her face.
"A person just died. In possibly the worst way ever, the body! It didn't even look like a body, i-it looked liked a...a"
Before she would finish she broke down into tears, sobbing bitterly.
I wanted to comfort her but there was a force holding me to my spot, I wanted to speak but the lump forming in my throat wouldn't let me. I sniffled and Hayden looked at me, his eyes too looked red and puffy.
"Jade its gonna be okay-"
He said but I couldn't help it, my legs went a week, I fell on my knees. Hot streams of tears poured down my face.
Somehow now the image of the body was more clear than before. The guts smeared around, broken bones sticking out of some of the torn body parts. The smell of blood that started to rot.
—wait! Rotten. The blood was rotting, the body was rotting—
I gasped as the realization hit me. I didn't notice but Hayden was right next to me, he's arms wrapped around me protectively but I didn't feel safe...at all.
"H-Hayden"
"Yea"
"Someone tricked us"
Everyone was looking at me now. Their eyes wide, eyebrows knitted in confusion.
"W-What do you mean"
"Didn't you see the....b-body was....rotting. It means he was-"
"Already dead" Shawn completed my sentence, shuddering.
"What the hell?! Who was screaming then? Why would someone trick us?!" Lena screeched with questions.
After realizing that no one was actually screaming for help made me feel even sicker.
The image kept on showing itself to me, unwilling I kept thinking of it.
What now? What are we supposed to do? Where are we supposed to go? Where even are we?
—where even are we now?—
This cursed question seems to occur to me, ridiculously way too many times. I tried to navigate the surroundings but my heart dropped, even more, when I realized the part of the forest we were in, was totally different.
The trees seemed to be so dense, blocking my view of the sky. Not even a single ray of sunlight shone through the leaves.
A foggy atmosphere circled us, the ground felt damp. It felt like every inch of this place weighed on my shoulders, making my body unable to move properly.
We were currently sat in a circle, close around each other in the middle of the woods, just tress, and trees. Where ever my eyes laid on I saw nothing but those godforsaken huge long intimidating moving trees.
—moving?!—
Something moved but not a ...person. Something changed in the surroundings, I swear there was something there, it was a tree or was it? Where the hell did it go?
—I swear it moved.—
"G-Guys....something moved"
"What...?"
"Over there"
I pointed far ahead of us. Everyone stiffened, shifting their gaze where I pointed but just then I heard something shuffle behind me, and before I knew I was yanked back.
A high pitched screaming escaped my lips this time with no resistance. My fear taking over my body, I kept screaming over and over while whatever strangled me, took me with it, dragging me away.
In such haste, I couldn't see what it was because my eyes burned with tears blurring my vision.
Being lifted off the ground I was roughly shoved against a tree, a hand covered my mouth stopping my screams.
—a hand, a human!—
