chapter three: Something dark emerges

George coughed again as he told a story for (y/n) to hear. The girl go worried, "Father! Perhaps you should be taking it easy." George smiled at his daughter, "You are a sweet child. But I am fine, this illness won't kill me." The girl was worried for him. His health was declining. She curled up next to her father to sleep herself, she had not slept in two weeks. She could do with a nap. The girl easily fell asleep next to her father. She was startled awake by the laughing of her brothers, they must have come home. The little girl whined and jumped off the bed after being shooed out by the older boys, perhaps they wanted to spare her details of their father's health? She was older than they. She understood illness. She went to the study where her father kep the mask. It hung on the wall. Just why did she have that mask? Why did she want to take it down and keep it away from humans? What connection did it have to her or her past? She climbed onto the desk and took it of the wall. It was too big for her small face, but she placed it on herself anyway. She had nothing to activate it.

Something inside her mind bubbled up. Some voice from the ancient past. This voice spoke to her from a distant memory, "(y/n), this mask is made to draw out the latent power within one's body. But the cost for one to be used is great, as great as the benefits." The little girl took off the mask and looked at the face it portrayed, it was marked to look like her vaguely. By it resembled another. She looked behind her when she heard an exclamation, "(y/n)!" It was Jonathan. He took the mask from her and took her off of the desk. "You could have gotten hurt by this," the young man spoke, "It could be dangerous if we don't know what it can do." The little girl's eyes never left the mask.
"Do you... perhaps know something about it?," the young man asked and set the girl on the floor as he sat to examine the mask, "You had it when mother and father found you." Red eyes continued to stare, "Latent power..." Jonathan gave her a concerned expression, "What?" "When I put it on, I heard a voice from the past. A memory. It said latent power.," the girl said. The young man looked to the picture of his mother then to his sister, "You have not slept in a while, have you? You should probably go get some rest. I fear you may be hallucinating from lack of sleep."

(Y/n) did not argue with her brother. She walked to her room and crawled under the covers of the soft bed. It was warm compared to the cold air. She felt comfortable. The small and ancient girl fell asleep with the doll that Jonathan bought her. She slept peacefully and deeply until scared awake by the sound of crashing. She went out of her room and found Dio on his back on the first floor while Jonathan was yelling at him from the second floor. Jonathan was telling Dio to stay away from his family, Dio looked very mad at Jonathan. The small plum haired girl was confused, she thought they all got along very well. "Jonathan, Dio?," the little girl yawned. "(Y/n), Stay away from him!," Jonathan snapped, "Go back to your room." The plum haired stopped rubbing her eyes too look between her two brothers, she had no idea what was going on. She tilted her head as Dio got up and limped to another room. Jonathan pushed the little girl into her room, "Go back to sleep. You should not have to worry about this."

The girl silently waited instead of sleeping. She heard that Jonathan was going out somewhere after a few days of waiting and staying away from Dio even though the blond tried to talk to her. She wanted to know what was wrong. If what she heard was correct, Jonathan had found what was making their father sick. The girl wanted to help him. She felt her hunger grip her stomach again. She needed to keep her strength up. But, she wanted to follow Jonathan. She put her cloak on and hid on the carriage. She stayed out of sight of Jonathan or the driver. They went into London where it began to snow. The carriage stopped in a dark street and Jonathan got out. The girl jumped onto a nearby building to watch as the carriage drove away. The driver warned Jonathan of the place he was going, Ogre Street. The most dangerous part of London. The girl knew that Jonathan would not be swayed and watched as he continued on into the dark streetways. She kept up and out of the way of her brother, he would scold her if he knew she was here. The girl kept following her brother, seeing he was in another alley dead end. A cat ran out of the alley, it had a puppy in its mouth that it was devouring.

From the shadows, three men attacked. A man wearing a top hat ordered the one with the knife to attack Jonathan. Jonathan was able to grab the knife as the martial arts one attacked. (Y/n) did not even hesitate and jumped down, landing a kick to the martial arts man's face as Jonathan pushed the knife man off of him. The girl landed in the snow beside Jonathan and smelled his blood. It smelled so good. She was feeling hungry. The martial arts man was getting up for a second round, only to be caught by the girl. Her hand melted into his flesh as she drank enough blood to make him go to sleep. Jonathan looked horrified that his sister came with him, "(y/n)! Why aren't you back home?!" "Bad move to be distracted, rich boy!," the man in the top hat shouted and attacked. His top had turned out to have razor edges on the brim to slice at opponents. The man threw his hat at Jonathan. Jonathan countered by kicking the knife that was on the ground next to him towards the attacking man.
The man dodged as the sinned hat flew closer to Jonathan. (Y/n) jumped up and caught the hat with her body, getting a deep slice to her face and belly in the process. Jonathan kicked the blond man back.

Jonathan looked at his little sister, "(y/n)!" "Jonathan, stay alert.," the girl said and pointed to the street. There were more men there, all of them looking ready to fight. The girl rose from her place in the snow and pulled the hat from her body, not caring her clothes were bloodied and torn. The men all closed in to attack the two siblings before the man from before yelled out. "Stop! I won't let any of you harm that gentleman or the child!," his words caused the crowd to cease, "But I must ask, why did you hold back on me? A leg like yours would have ruined my face. And child, why were you so willing to sacrifice your own being?" The crowd of men looked from their leader back to the two before them. "We are here for our father's sake. I realized you must have a family, I did not want to cause them grief.," Jonathan answered before the men turned to the child. The girl held the man's hat, "Pain such as this is only temporary. But the pain of losing our father will be a scar that won't be healed so easily. And the wound is already gone, can't you see?"
She walked to the man and gave him his hat back. He saw that the wound she once had was indeed gone. There was no blood anymore, only a small glowing cut that closed before his eyes. He looked from the girl to his friends. Both were breathing and one was asleep, they were okay. "I made your friend go to sleep. He will wake up tomorrow.," the girl said, "Just make sure he has something to eat when he does and that he rests."

"Please. What are your names?," the man asked. He had warm brown eyes and long blond hair. His pale skin held a scar across the face. He deem not seem like a bad man. He seemed lost. Jonathan spoke up, "I am Jonathan Joestar. This is my little sister.." "my name is (y/n).," the little girl said as she used some pins to pin her torn dress. "You said you were looking for Asian medicine, Jonathan? I must warn you, the man who sells it is as sly as a fox!," the blond man said. Jonathan took his cape of and gave it to his sister, "I want you to go home. I will take care of this. You can make it home by yourself right?" The little girl nodded, she could. She knew how to travel fast. That is how she was able to hunt her prey all over the countryside. "Go home and wait for me there. I trust you will be safe in the dark. Your species are more suited for it anyways, right?, Jonathan asked, much to the surprise of the men around them. The girl nodded again, "Be safe, Jonathan. I can handle myself." "Good. Now go. Tell father that I am coming home with a cure.," her brother said before letting her go. The girl jumped over the group of men and ran along the rooftops, quickly traveling home. They now knew she was not human.

She ran in the icy winds and through the darkness, returning to the manor that she called home. She opened the door and walked in to see some of the doctors that Jonathan asked to take care of their father. Dio was nowhere to be found. The little girl did not want to cause her father distress, so she went and changed into an outfit more appropriate to see her father in. She walked to her father's room and looked in. Her father looked relieved, "(y/n), where were you? The maids could not find you." The girl walked into the room and climbed onto the bed, "I'm sorry father, I followed Jonathan. He found the antidote. He is going to get it and come back for you to take it. He sent me to tell you."
The aging human man smiled and placed his hand on her hair, "He has grown into a fine gentleman. The little girl smiled. As he rubbed her soft hair. "Father. I don't know what is happening between Dio and Jonathan. But I don't like seeing my brothers fighting." The man took his hand off of his daughter's head, "I don't particularly like that they are fighting either. But, boys fight." The girl curled up on the bed next to her ailing father. She did not want to tell him what had happened in order to get this antidote for him. But her father was as sharp as ever, "(y/n). Why aren't you wearing one of the dresses I got you?" The little girl looked back at her father, "I'm more comfortable in my traditional clothing. This feels good to me." The man chuckled.

She heard Jonathan get home and heard him come into the room, "Father, I have called the police. I discovered a terrible plot set by Dio." George was stunned to hear his, "Jonathan, what do you mean?" "Dio has been poisoning you father.," Jonathan said, "please, just take this antidote. The police and I are waiting for Dio to return so they can arrest him. I have proof." (Y/n) could not believe her ears, "Jonathan?" Her brother gave her a saddened look as their father took the antidote to the poison.
"I'm sorry, (y/n). But it seems like Dio is not as good of a person as you thought he was.," her brother said picked her up, "Go to your room. You already had enough tragedy."
