Gabriel.
I take a deep breath in, feeling a little anxious, then breathe out. Then I move forward with helping Payton pack up what's left of her and my stuff. Two small bags we're brought in for us and we're packing up what's left of the thing's we came here with. They even returned our wallets, but have not given us our keys or phones, citing safety as the reason.
A bed has also opened up for me at a rehab inpatient centre. A nurse dropped by to inform me. It's located in the same building as we're Payton's being sent. It's 15 minutes away. Crescent-Port's a rather big city that it has a total of one large hospital and two smaller hospital's. If I recall correctly, Sully where Payton came from only has one hospital and that's it despite being rather big it's self.
"I can't believe we're being transferred out of here." She says.
"Neither can I." I respond. She's looking pretty anxious about it. "You still don't want to go do you?" I ask her.
"Isn't that obvious?" She snaps, zipping up her bag. "Payton." I tell her, moving her and my bag aside and taking her hands in mine. She sits down with me on the bed.
"I don't want to hurt you emotionally or in anyway, or make you mad at me, but...
What would Carl say right now if he was here? I've never met the guy so I can go off what you've told me, but you have phrased him as being really loving and caring about you and you're co-workers."
"He'd say..."
I nod for her to go on. "He actually warned me I'd end up in Hospital in the long run if I didn't sort out my problems, and now I am. I feel pathetic I let this happen."
"Please don't feel that way... And you're not pathetic. Thing's are just on hold for a bit now."
"I'm going to get throw out of my course."
"You won't, Holly said thing's like that won't be restarting right away. Anyway, you have a valid excuse for non-attendance. She can send your campus in Sully a letter, telling them you're in Hospital."
"I don't want to put my life on hold, Gabe."
"Then, what's your alternative? Do you have a back-up plan?"
"I-I don't know..."
"Then go. If you're not going to do it for yourself, then do it for me. Please." I beg her, giving me puppy eyes. She ends up smiling and kisses my head. "Everything's going to work out in the end, Payton. You just need to give it time." I smile.
She sighs, nodding. "So, you. How do you feel about be forced to go to rehab?"
"Fine with it, actually. And I'm not an involuntary patient, Payton. I want to go."
She looks a little peeved with me now that I've said this. Maybe she just needs time to warm up to this whole situation and once she's there, she'll be better.
"Heyyy, guys, happy Thursday morning!" She says, sticking her head in. "Holly." I respond while Payton says nothing.
"An ambulance will be here in the afternoon for you both and I'll be there not long after to help you both settle in." She tells us. "Great." I tell her while I hear an angry sound come from Payton.
"I'd rather you drug me so I don't have to go through the arrival process."
"Payton, all that would do is delay it. You would be called up later and questioned as per normal once sedation wore off. And we won't give you any medication." Holly tells her.
"Then I'll hurt one of you to make you."
"Then I'll sign off on you being restrained and not drugged. That will hurt you more emotionally. There's no refusing to go."
"Holly, she's just not keen on this." I tell her.
"I know, but, Payton, you need to understand refusing and not going isn't an option." Holly re-iterates. Payton says nothing.
"Anyway, I spoke to my boss and his given permission for you to say goodbye to Carl. You will only have two minutes though and must scrub up.
After that, I don't want to here any more refusals from you, understood? You will then have lunch, wait a three hours and be transferred to the other hospital to go through intake, be shown around and you can afternoon tea." She smiles.
Payton's not any less angry, but she's eager to see Carl and Holly gestures for both of us to stand and follow her.
---
"You both ready?" Holly asks us. Payton and me look over each-other, hands in gloves, our bodies covered in over-sized plastic suits. We have masks and goggles on too.
"Yes." We tell her and and she guides us into the room. An old man is lying on a bench. A tag is around his ankle, stating his name and age.
He looks peaceful, as if he was asleep. I can see a bandage around his head and in his in a uniform with apron over the top. What Payton's had to go through is horrible. I wipe away a tear. I don't want to them to see me cry.
"Carl..." Payton whispers, walking up to him and she takes his hand, struggling to hold back tears.
"Now's your chance to tell him anything you want to tell him." Holly whispers.
"Carl... Thank you for being there for me many times, being my guide in life. And it sucks now that you're gone because I'd say that your existence, the mark you made on the world certainly had an impact. I think you're a legacy that's worth remembering. But I realize you became like those monsters outside. The real you was already dead before you arrived here.
Anyhow, um, Holly is here my Doctor and she's going to treat me, help me. I'm going into inpatient for anxiety. Looks like I'm ending up there after all.
You warned me this would happen and it did. I was also dangerously overdosing on medication I shouldn't have."
"One minute left, Payton."
"I promise I'll remember you for ever and ever. And thank you for leaving me your home and money. I won't have to struggle anymore now.
Goodbye Carl, I love you Grandfather."
Then she turns away, letting go of his hand. "How did he actually die, Holly?"
Holly looks nervous and looks behind her. "Heart-attack was the primary cause of death. He was as good as dead when he came in here. He wasn't the Carl you knew when he was brought in."
She's breaking patient confidentiality...
Then Payton looks awful all of a sudden. "Holly, I feel sick."
"Uh, come now." She says, leading Payton out of the room. I wave goodbye to Carl. "I'll take good care of her, I promise." I tell him, bowing, then follow.
After I leave, Holly's way up the hallway with Payton. Looking behind me, I see two men enter Carl's room. They're holding a body bag...
The morgue. I gulp and carry on, running after Payton and Holly. They're at the Nurse's station and Payton's gasping, struggling to breathe. It's because she's crying.
Her anxiety's making her feel sick. Holly's trying to talk her though this, but it's no good. I see a Nurse in the corner, feeling a syringe with a murky blue liquid. It reads, 'Merge' on the label of the bottle.
What is that? And I see another Nurse step out of a store room. She has restraints in her hand and the another Nurse turns around with the syringe. They're looking at Payton. Shit, no, Holly...
I can't watch this and turn around and run. I hear Payton cry my name to come back.
I'm a coward. I can't be there for her, I'm a coward. I'm running, pathetic.
She deserves better. I can't offer her what she needs.
Then I feel someone grip onto me. "No, no, no!" I panic. "Gabriel, please calm down." Says the Guard.
"I can't do this!" I panic, him not letting me go. I hear a heart-wrenching scream. Payton, no...
And I feel the Guard push me to my knees, a Nurse approaching. "Need any help?" He asks. I shake my head.
"Can we get him back to his room? I don't want to hurt or drug him." The Guard says.
"Gabriel, it'll be okay. Let's just get you back. Payton will be fine." The Nurse tells me.
"No, no, no." I whimper, trying to pull away, as I see an unconscious Payton being carried away.
'Bloody idiot. Yusuke, where's Holly?" A voice asks and I see a man striding past is. His in a suit. "Up the hall. They're taking Payton back to her room." The nurse tells him.
"I see. Well, tell Holly when she's free, I want to see her in my office." Snaps the man. "Yes, boss." The nurse responds.
This is the head of the Hospital?
"And get this one out of the hall." The man snaps. "Come on, Gabriel." Says the Nurse and Guard, but I can't find it in me to walk so they drag me somewhat while I feel myself shake, mumbling.
"What's he saying?" The Guard asks. We stop moving and the Nurse touches my head.
"Fever coming back. But his scheduled for transfer for this afternoon. We can give him more methadone and other meds till then."
"The ending of legacy's..." I mumble.
"Geez, his incoherent." The Guard says. "Uh, I'll talk to Holly. If his becoming delirious..." The Nurse trails off and they proceed down the hall, continuing onwards with Gabriel.
