Chapter 8
The men began to shuffle towards the exit when they stopped still, a quiet background voice getting slowly louder as the person made their way down the hall and towards them. Millie listened intently as the guy, who appeared to be french, chatted on his radio to another guy.
"Le patron m'a ordonné de les chercher ici. La dernière fois que j'ai vérifié, il y avait un type blessé. non, ils n'ont aucun espoir de sortir vivants. ils seraient stupides d'essayer, nous avons bloqué le dernier étage pour qu'ils ne puissent pas sortir de là." (Sorry if it's a poor translation!) he said with a laugh as he got closer to the room.
"Shit." Millie exclaimed as she let out a breath. She shook her head as she leant back in her chair. "He's going to come in that room, Rex." She said urgently. "You need to hide!" Rex let out a small surprised laugh.
"You speak french?" He asked as he backed himself and Big Boss into a dark corner of the room. He sat Big Boss back on the floor as he readied his weapon.
"Yeah, a small amount. He said 'The boss has ordered me to look for them down here. last time i checked there was one injured guy. they've got no hope of getting out alive. they would be stupid to try, we've blocked the top floor so they cant get out from there.'" Millie recited almost word for word. They fell silent again as the bad guy stopped in front of the door, finishing off his chat.
"Je vais vous parler bientôt. Je suis sur le point de tuer le blessé." He said with a laugh as he twisted the doorknob.
"He wants to kill Big Boss." Millie summarised to Rex through the headset. Rex knelt down and got his weapons ready, there was no way he was letting one guy take out Big Boss. That guy had been through everything with him and he wasn't going to give up that easily. He wasn't going down without a fight. He held his breath as the door opened and the guy walked in, gun at the ready before even locating Big Boss. He walked through the dark room, eyes scanning every inch until he could find the injured one. The room was deathly silent which made Millie nervous. She could hear the guy's footsteps but that was it. These soldiers were in full stealth mode. She clasped her hands over her mouth in anxiety as she waited for something to happen. She prayed Rex and Big Boss would be okay.
The soldier checked every part of the room and finally headed in the direction the team were hiding in. His gun was readied and almost pointing at them already, although this guy clearly hadn't noticed them yet. Rex waited for the perfect moment, when the guy turned away slightly to look to his side and rushed him, pinning him up against the wall with a gun to his head.
"Drop your gun." Rex ordered.
"s'il vous plaît ne me faites pas mal, j'ai une famille!" The soldier cried out loudly. Rex slammed the soldiers face into the wall.
"Quiet!" He hissed at him. "Now drop your gun!" The soldier cooperated quickly and the gun fell to the floor with a thump. Rex pressed the silence against the soldier's head. "Tell me how we can get out of here or I'll kill you right here and now!" He hissed at the soldier as if he didn't care about ending a life. Millie listened in on the encounter, her stomach tightening nervously as she imagined having to be in that situation and possibly needing to kill someone who had already been pleading because he had a family. Her heart tightened at the thought of police having to go to that man's family and tell them he died during his duty and how upset they would be. Millie couldn't bare to have something like that on her conscience.
"tu ne sortiras jamais d'ici vivant!" The soldier said ominously, barely a quiver in his voice despite a gun to his head.
"Translate." Rex ordered and it took a second for Millie to realise the order was directed at her. She straightened in her chair with her eyes wide.
"He s-said you'll never get out of here alive." Millie stuttered nervously. There was something about giving the bad news to Rex instead of it coming straight from the soldier's mouth that made her scared. Rex was bad tempered enough without someone messing him about. Rex growled at the man and shoved the gun harder into his cheek.
"j'ai une famille!" He pleaded. Millie wasted no time in translating this time.
"I have a family." She repeated his words but this time in English. Rex let out a flat laugh. He kneed the soldier in the back of his leg and caused it to buckle, sending him crashing to his knees.
"If you want to see them again, tell me how to get out of here... in English!" Rex slammed the side of the gun into the soldier's face sending him off balance. He let out a small yell in pain before straightening back up.
"P-please sir, the roof." The soldier spoke in English with a strong french accent. He looked pleadingly at Rex desperate to make him believe the lies he'd just spat out, but Rex already knew the truth. Rex hesitated for a moment. There was no reason Millie would lie when she translated what he'd said about the roof being blocked off, whereas this guy wanted to save his life and was willing to do so no matter what. Rex cocked the gun and held it to the soldier's temple.
"Looks like you don't care about your family. I know the roof is blocked off." Rex steadied his hand as he gave one last look at the soldier.
"Va te faire foutre! Tu vas mourir ici, imbécile! Notre patron est toujours devant vous. J'espère que tu meurs lentement et douloureusement, homme diabolique." The French soldier rambled, but no sooner had he taken a breath after he finished the sentence, Rex pulled the trigger and killed him. Millie remained deadly silent. She was shocked, upset, angry... she'd never had to deal with a situation like that before and she really wasn't prepared. Despite not actually being in the room, hearing every heartbeat and nervous breath made it feel like she was and now this soldier, family or no family, was dead. This was no fun game, this was real.
"Millie?" Rex's voice rang through the headphones but she was too spaced out to respond. Rex turned to Big Boss and helped him up, once again throwing his arm around his shoulders. "Millie?" Millie shook her head and blinked a few times as she settled back into reality.
"Yes, Sorry Rex, everything okay?" She asked carefully.
"What nonsense was that guy saying before I ended him?" The way Rex spoke about this killing so easily and freely really got to Millie, whose palms were still sweating from hearing the encounter.
"I-it was... well..." she stammered, too scared to actually repeat what he said. Rex was scary enough as it was without angering him with awful words.
"I want to know." Rex demanded as he headed for the door with Big Boss.
"He used some choice swear words, said he hoped you died a painful and slow death and that his boss was always ahead of you so you'd die here." Millie said reluctantly, barely wanting to repeat it at all. Things like that were things she hated and having to keep saying or hearing them was making it worse for her. Rex let out a humoured laugh.
"It's funny because he's dead and we're okay..." Rex said to Big Boss as they headed out of the room and into the hallway.
"Roger, give us the best way to the ground floor. Now." Big Boss ordered as they shuffled slowly and quietly down the hallway, everyone with baited breath as they waited to clear the section without being spotted or heard. Millie once again straightened herself to look over at Roger who was frantically typing on his computer.
"Further down on the right is a fire exit. If we can disable the fire alarm, it won't trigger but it'll take you straight to the bottom floor and out of a side exit." Roger said proudly, knowing his hard work was paying off so far.
"Good work. Let's go." Big Boss ordered Rex as they headed for the door, their hopes of escaping alive finally growing.
