Chapter 7

"Millie I'm really not in the mood for joking about." Rex scolded her like a teacher to a pupil. Millie let out a shocked laugh at the fact that thought had even crossed his mind. Did she really seem like the type that would joke about in a situation like this?

"No offence but I don't think I'd ever joke about with you. You're scary." She said honestly, looking out the window in disbelief as the night sky had finally taken over and darkened the outside world around them. She heard a sigh from the other end of the radio.

"They're gonna have a lot of shit to deal with when I get back there." Rex retorted. "I thought they gave a fuck but obviously not. They're all happy to carry on their days and lives regardless of if we get out of here or not. They still get their fat pay check so what does it matter?" He began to vent as he came out of the room he was hiding in and stormed down the corridor, his gun cocked and ready. The minute one person got in the way, he was shooting them. There was no point in hiding out anymore. If the directors of this operation were happy to leave the team there and not even get them out effectively, Rex wasn't pissing about. He was shooting his way out and making as much noise as possible.

"Hey. That's no way to speak! I care. I'm here with Roger who is on his ninetieth coffee of the day while we try and get you guys out. We care. Don't be reckless, please Rex?" Millie said softly. She didn't care anymore, she was going to wear her heart on her sleeve for this guy. He needed it. For some reason, her words got to him and tugged at his heart strings despite him trying to fight it. It was the first nice thing he had heard in a long time. He hesitated for a second, wondering how to respond. Should he be nice back? Or should he continue to facade he had with all his colleagues, that he was a stone cold killer?

"Just work out the fastest way out of here. I'm heading down to Big Boss." He said heartlessly. It was his comfort blanket, the thing he headed to every time he was meant to show emotion. This is how he acted with all his team and that's why they all despised him. It was for the best though, when they died it never affected him as much. The only person who could ever make him feel any emotion was Big Boss and that's the person he was risking himself to save right now. Millie sat back in her chair in surprise. Even her kind words didn't faze him. How was she meant to ensure the safety of someone who now sounded like he wasn't going to ensure his own safety? Millie brought the instant messenger back up once again.

Millie: Rex is heading down to Big Boss. He's furious.

Roger: There's nothing we can do. People higher than us have already made the decision.

Millie: still don't understand how travelling all the way down to the ground floor to escape by car is the best idea.

Roger: me either but it can't be argued. Helicopter is in use.

Millie: for who? The ceo? The queen?

Roger: Let's not argue over this there's no point. I'll tell Big Boss to be ready. The minute those two are together the swarm will arrive. They'll have to fight for their lives.

Rex shot down the flights of stairs with ease, taking out any person who even decided to step into his line of sight, holding a weapon or not. He didn't care any more. This place was hell and there was no way he was going to sit there and hide from all the assholes - he didn't have time. Big Boss needed him right now. He was injured and alone and possibly the only other team member that was alive. Millie knew Roger was right, as soon as Rex and Big Boss were together, it was going to be manic. A feeling of nervousness and guilt tugged at her stomach. She couldn't let him die. She was going to do everything in her power to make sure they got out safely as best she could from this room.

"Rex?" Millie called through the headset again.

"What?" His answer was short and simple just like he wanted. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to avoid this girl so that he couldn't grow attached to her. She'd already been nice to him and he panicked into his emotionless state, but that may have got more difficult the longer he spoke to her.

"I just wanted to say be careful. No doubt they know Big Boss is there and he's injured. They'll be waiting for someone to come back and get him and you'll both be in trouble then." Millie explained her worries to Rex who continued to make his way to Big Boss. There was silence on the other end as Rex took in everything she said.

"Understood. Let Big Boss know and we'll just have to fight through one. Now whereabouts is he?" Rex asked quickly. Millie quickly typed on the instant messenger to Roger to find out.

"He's hiding in a store cupboard just a few doors left of the stairs you'll come out from." Millie answered as soon as she knew the response, letting a sigh of relief escape her. She didn't want Rex to be annoyed at her because she couldn't do the job. She still wanted to prove her worth despite his lack of engagement. She wasn't asking that they became best friends, but she wanted them to trust each other and work together.

"Thank you." He said politely as Millie fell silent. The background noise was all that could be heard as Rex snuck through the door into the eighth floor and instantly headed left, eyeing up the names on the doors until he came upon the store cupboard. He twisted the doorknob slowly, opening the door slowly as the hinges creaked. Rex double checked his surroundings to make sure no one had come out after hearing the door squeak open before making his way into the store room with his handgun cocked and ready.

"Boss?" He called out as he took a few steps into the room. It was almost pitch black, the large windows letting in only a small amount of street light as the night had now taken over, leaving Boss in the room full of darkness.

"Rex?" A weak voice called out from a corner of the room. Rex rushed over to see Big Boss slumped against the wall, a makeshift tourniquet tied in the middle of his thigh just above a gunshot wound. "The fuck are you doing here? You should be getting out of this hellhole!" Big Boss was back to his normal bossy ways. Rex let out a chesty laugh.

"Always the same..." Rex shook his head. "You know I'm never leaving without you." Rex lifted Big Boss up onto his feet and he let out a pained cry. Rex moved Big Boss's arm around his shoulders and took the weight off the injured leg. "Either we both get out, or neither of us do. That's what we've always said."
