Chapter 6

"Rex, is everything okay?" Millie asked once more, her voice audibly shaking. There was movement heard in the headset before she got an answer.

"No it's not alright, you idiot. Just get me out of this fucking place!" Rex's voice was back in her ear. For some silly reason, a smile broke out on her face. Despite his despicable tone, she was happy he was okay - for now anyway - but she had to try and get him out of here as soon as possible. "Are you new or something?" He suddenly barked unexpectedly.

"To this, Yeah. I normally work in procurement." Millie felt the need to answer straight away. She heard him muttering an answer to himself.

"Brilliant. I'm going to die." He mumbled. Anger built up inside Millie as she listened to this guy moan and swear in almost every sentence. "Where's my normal guy?"

"At home. In bed. Not giving a shit about whether you're alive or not. The whole team went home at five. The only two people who stayed to try and help you were me and Roger so I'd appreciate some respect." Millie finally snapped, having enough of his tone and venomous way of speaking. She was only trying to help. She had stayed behind to save them and this is how he's going to speak? Silence greeted her and she sighed in defeat, guilt filling her as it always did when she snapped at someone. "Sorry." She said reluctantly, knowing it was best for everyone if they got on and worked together through this.

"Your honesty is appreciated." He said blankly in return, not giving her anything to work with. She brought up the instant message system on the computer and messaged Roger on how they were meant to get these people out of a building swarming with people who wanted to kill them the second they laid eyes on them. This was going to be the biggest challenge.

Millie: what's the plan Roger? Rex is on the tenth floor and said the floors between him and the roof are swarming. He's already fought one guy off.

Roger: there goes my only plan.
Roger: Big Boss is stuck on eighth floor with a leg injury.

Millie: Rex has already said he's not risking his life for anyone else. He won't go and help him.

Roger: trust me he will. Tell him we're in contact with Big Boss now. Watch him change

Millie: I don't think he will but okay...

She flicked the headset back on and took a deep breath in and out before she spoke. She'd literally just heard him say he wasn't going to help anyone else, why would that change now? Did him and Big Boss have history? Roger obviously wouldn't know and she doubted Rex would ever open up to me about something like that, so why was she even bothering to think about it?

"Rex, it's Millie. Do you copy?" Millie began, feeling more nervous than before. For some reason it almost felt like she was about to give him bad news or something. The pressure and nerves built up inside her swiftly, clouding her thought and judgment.

"If you're not telling me my way out then go away." He snapped in response to Millie's surprise. She screwed her lips up in frustration before closing her eyes to calm herself down. She thought about his situation and how frightened he must be, that as far as he knew he'd lost his team and was now stuck by himself fighting off the enemy as he tried to escape somewhere unfamiliar. She needed to remember that every time he barked at her. He didn't mean it personally.

"I'm not but-"

"Then go away. I'm trying to concentrate." He snapped once again. There was no way around this, Millie was just going to have to spit it out if she wanted him to listen to her. She was never going to get a word in otherwise.

"Big Boss is alive." Millie blurted quickly but she got nothing in response. She just stared ahead of her as she waited for Rex to say something. She gripped the headphones and pushed them closer to her head. Was there another jammer? Had she lost contact with him? Panic set in as she heard nothing. "Rex? You there?" Footsteps suddenly came into the background and she bit her lips together once again. They got closer and closer, before the door to the room got opened and closed again. Millie imagined Rex hiding in a dark corner while someone came into the room looking for him. His breathing was silent just as Millie's had become since hearing the footsteps. Millie felt like she was in that room too, any noise she made could ruin his position so she kept quiet. Seconds later, there was a yelp, a struggle and then a loud crack. A body fell to the floor. Millie's breathing quickened as her brows furrowed. She bit her lips together nervously as she twitched her leg. She prayed that Rex was okay over and over in her head. The more the silence ensued, the more she panicked and soon she was hyperventilating down the headset to Rex.

"You okay?" Rex's voice rang through the headset and into Millie's ears, sounding like music to her. He was okay. Her breathing slowed instantly and she relaxed in her chair. "Millie?" A smile broke on her face as she realised he'd remembered her name, it was something so small to her but it showed he cared slightly. It was something for her to cling to.

"Sorry, yes. I was scared you'd been hurt. I didn't mean to blurt out about-" Millie began but as soon as the subject steered towards Big Boss, Rex was quick to cut in.

"Where is he?"

"I thought you didn't want to risk yourself for anyone else?" Millie responded, knowing he was probably going to snap back at her but she was curious. What about this one guy changed what he'd said to her only minutes ago?

"This isn't a game, Millie. Where the fuck is he?" Rex spat harshly.

"Eighth floor. He has a leg injury too." Millie responded quickly with slight fear in her voice. There was something about this guy that really got to her but she couldn't quite work out what.

"Shit. Shit, shit, shit." Rex vented in frustration. "And let me guess you want us to head to the roof?" Just as he spoke, a message popped up from Roger.

Roger: Spoke with the powers that be. They don't have a spare helicopter for the two of them.

Millie: What??!! So what's the plan now?

Roger: don't even go there. Just been arguing for the last ten minutes...
Roger: they'll have to go out the front door.

Millie: you want an injured guy to go down eight floors to get a lift??

Roger: not my call. Way past my head.

"Actually..." Millie sighed helplessly as she updated Rex with the shitty news she'd just been given. "There's no helicopters. You'll need to head to the ground to get a car..."
