Chapter 24

Millie and the man she was with had kept their conversation pretty hushed throughout the night, but Rex could pick up that Millie was really uncomfortable with either the person or what they were discussing. She huffed and tutted a few times through the conversation, at one point throwing herself back in the chair to show her disproval of what the man had said.

"What can I say? You knew what you were getting involved in." The man had said, Rex doing what he could to make sure he could hear their conversation.

"I know, Flick, but a whole year?" Millie said, disappointedly. It was then that Rex realised who the man was. Flick was the person Millie had called on to help get him and Big Boss to safety. So what was this conversation about? Payment?

"I had to hack big things Millie, I got involved in government shit. You owe me everything." Millie sighed as she ran her hands through her hair.

"I know. It was that or those soldiers dying and I couldn't live with it. Don't worry, I'll pay my debt." Rex couldn't believe what he was hearing, had this woman really got into some sort of debt with Flick to help the soldiers out? Millie sat back as she took a sip of her drink and looked up to the sky, as if summoning strength to continue the conversation. "What do I need to do?" The smile on Flick's face grew instantly and he moved to place a hand on Millie's thigh. She sucked in an uncomfortable breath as Rex straightened in his chair. Who did this guy think he was?

"I'm so glad you asked." Flick smiled maliciously. "I've got a few business associates that need sorting out, some debts to collect and a few successful companies to hack. You can be my accomplice." Millie shifted her legs away from Flick's wandering hand as she shook her head, worry filling her as she remembered the types of things she'd had to do for him previously.

"I told you, I'm not getting involved with your side business." She emphasised the last two words in a way that made Rex realise that they meant something a lot more sinister.

"Listen, Amelia." Flick began, using her full name to get her attention. "Remember, I own you for a whole year now. Whatever jobs I ask you to do, you say yes and you do them. I'm not here to negotiate with you. I'm the seller, you're the buyer, you knew the contract." Flick downed the last of his pint before he slammed the glass on the table. "I hope your soldier friends were worth it." He stood up quickly and put a hand on her shoulder as he passed her. "Work starts after your day job tomorrow. Have a nice night." He sauntered off and left Millie in the booth by herself. For a moment, all was still and silent but as reality set in, Millie began to freak out. She began to hyperventilate, rubbing her hands through her hair before she choked back a sob, desperate to keep it in as she finished her drink and threw her coat on, rushing out of the bar before she made a scene. Rex's gut tugged anxiously. There was no way he could leave her in that state. He quickly finished his drink and headed out too, following Millie as she rushed down the road desperate to hold her feelings in. Millie rounded a corner quickly, barely paying attention as she stressed, bumping into a man she was passing.

"I'm so sorry." She said quickly as she turned to leave but the man grabbed hold of her shoulder and turned her back to face him.

"It's fine. Tell me, what's a beautiful lady like yourself doing out at this time by herself?" He sneered. Millie's legs went weak as she suddenly realised that she was in trouble, down a random alleyway with a man who was double the size of her.

"I-I was just on my way home." She stammered, fear engulfing her. The mans hand didn't leave her.

"Well, let me walk you home." He insisted, his arm sliding across her lower back and sitting on her hip. She moved herself away from the man quickly.

"I'm fine, honestly." She snapped, fed up of trying to play nice. The man was quick to pull her closer to him again, Millie letting out a yelp as she crashed into the body of the man. Rex wasn't too far away and upon hearing the cry, he sped up, quickly rounding the corner to see the man.

"Move your arm off her or I fucking break it." Rex threatened as he stormed towards the two of them. Millie let out a thankful smile as the man jumped away from her and shuffled back further. Her shaking body was enough to show how scared she had been, fearful for her life as this lowlife pestered her. Upon seeing Rex, Millie's chest had tightened in excitement, her heart swelling as she saw the man who would barely say two words to her save her life.

"Look Man, I was just joking. I didn't mean to-" Rex's fist landed on the man's nose, breaking it under his calloused hand. The man let out a grunt as he fell to the floor, blood dripping through the fingers he'd brought up to his face.

"Touch her again and I'll kill you." Rex said as he put his arm around Millie and led her away. As they got onto a main road, he stopped and turned her towards him, worry on his face for the first time. "Are you okay?" She let out a shaky breath as she nodded.

"I think you got there just at the right time. Thank you." Millie hesitated for a second before she pulled him into a hug, not bothered if he retaliated or not. To her surprise, he did, wrapping his muscular arms around her for comfort.

"It's the least I could do. You saved my life." He finally said what he had been holding back all this time. Millie smiled into his chest, thankful that he finally opened up to her. "Which reminds me, was that Flick you were with?" Millie straightened as if she'd been caught out. Her eyes widened in fear.

"Yeah." She sighed heavily. "I need to repay him for his services." She, for once, was the one keeping it brief. Rex raised an eyebrow at her.

"How much?" He pressed. She laughed as she shook her head.

"He doesn't work with money. When he works a job for you, he then gets to be your boss for however long it takes to work it back..." Millie hesitated, unsure as to how much she should be telling him. "Because he had to hack radios, government stuff, electrical boards, he now owns me for a year." Rex's mouth dropped open just as Millie's stomach dropped to the floor. "I have to do whatever he wants for a year. I have no say in it whatsoever."

"Why the fuck did you call on him? Why put your life on the line like that?" Rex snapped, emotions battling against each other. He was sad, angry, frustrated.

"To help you. I couldn't sit and watch you and Big Boss die..." she said confidently. "And I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was worth it."
