Chapter 20

Millie had barely slept, the nightmares of Eli and what she had previously done for him swimming in her subconscious for her dreams to devour. When the alarm had sounded at six in the morning, she was already awake and glad that she wouldn't have to try and sleep anymore. At least being at work would take her mind off of it, even if her life was going to be made a living hell by Roger and the suits.
She pulled herself out of bed and into the shower, keeping the temperature cold as she got in. The icy water shocked her awake, her skin hurting as the water hit like hail. As she sucked in a sharp breath and shivered, she slowly warmed the water to a decent temperature and washed herself. Time ticked on, yet she remained in the shower with the water just running off her head, down the contours of her face and body before it disappeared down the drain, just like her life she thought.

Finally she pulled herself out of the shower and got ready, reluctance and dread dragging her down as she finally set off for work, not knowing quite what she was going to get when she arrived. Her own job should be okay but if Roger or any of that team found her, there may be trouble on her hands.

She slid her work card into the reader and it beeped as it turned green, allowing her into her office. She sat down at her desk and noted the unusual silence in the room. Her colleagues around her hadn't even greeted her or asked how she was despite the week she had just had.

"Amelia, can you come into my office please?" Her boss Ade called as soon as she logged in. She must have had the log open on her computer just waiting for the moment Millie arrived. With a dramatic sigh, Millie stood up and walked in with a pen and paper in hand. She noted another person in the office as she got closer and her stomach dropped once again. This was becoming an all too familiar feeling. As she entered the room and shut the door behind her, the other person turned around to reveal themselves.

"Good morning Ade, Roger." Millie remained professional despite wanting to boot kick Roger from the top of the building. It took every ounce of strength for her not to pull a face or roll her eyes.

"Hi Amelia, I hope you are okay." Ade begun as she sat down on her leather swivel chair and turned into her desk. "Roger needs to discuss something with the two of us." Roger rolled his eyes as he began to talk about something he clearly did not agree with.

"We have another mission, a level three - much less dangerous than the one Amelia assisted with. We all logged in this morning and introduced ourselves to the soldiers but they are refusing to do the mission without Amelia on the team." Millie's eyes widened in surprise. This was impossible, she just had to attend court for how badly she went against the policies whilst helping them. Why would they want her back?

"Is this the whole team or one individual?" Ade asked, gauging how serious of a matter it was. After all, Ade's team were already short without losing Millie to another department. Roger shook his head, clearly furious.

"Just one." Roger said but as Ade went to reply, and dismiss the idea, Roger added "but he's the boss." Millie couldn't believe it. Big Boss wanted her back on the team? Without his say so, the whole team couldn't begin the assignment.

"I see." Ade crossed one long, slim leg other the other, her pencil skirt stretching to its maximum. She pondered thoughtfully for a second. Inside, Millie was begging her to say yes, despite everything that had happened, just so she could talk to the guys who saved her life once more.

"What type of mission?" She asked.

"Classified." Roger spat as if the answer was obvious.

"No then." Ade retorted. "A level three mission is not urgent. Talk to the suits and they'll sort out the boss." Roger sunk into his chair in frustration.

"This has come from the suits above us. The boss is refusing ANY missions until Millie is on one of them. This is a level three but it's gaining intel on a possible level one mission. We need this mission to go ahead." Roger explained, every now and again glaring over at Millie as if to say 'I hope you are happy'.

"Fine." Ade had thought long enough. "In that case, whoever she is replacing will come to my team. We are on the brink of signing a huge deal with Lidoplex and Amelia was on the forefront of that. I'm going to need help if you're taking her from me." Roger nodded quickly.

"Understood. He'll be here within half an hour." Roger responded as he stood up, gesturing for Millie to follow. "Grab your stuff." He ordered her as they left the office. Once Millie had her things, she was led back into the call centre and back down to the chair she had been on that fateful night.

"Hi." She said as she sat at the desk, turning and offering a smile to her neighbour. He simply looked at her and then back to his screen, not offering any welcome.

"Gilbert, you're in procurement. Meet Ade in her office for debrief." Roger ordered a tall, big built man who scowled over at Millie before he left, muttering to himself as he did so. Millie felt the guilt rising as her stomach tightened, she was never going to be liked here when she'd got rid of one of their own.

"Right guys, debrief now and set up to begin in five minutes. Operation snakebite will be in motion." Roger ordered everyone to his small conference room where he explained the mission once again. The team were infiltrating a warehouse to get hold of any information that could be used against the manager. They were going to capture him, alive, and take him to interrogation. Once everyone agreed that they understood, they all set up their radios and monitors. Millie logged in and plugged her headset in.

"This is Millie at Base, do you copy?"

"Good to hear your voice again." The husky voice responded. "Glad they paid attention."

"Rex?"
