Chapter 18

Millie finally rose from her seat, making her way over to the Judge to thank him before she exited, Jason and Diego behind her as she went down the aisle between the now empty seats and through the double doors.

"How noble of you." The three of them heard as soon as the doors closed and the Judge was no longer in sight. They turned around to see Gary and Roger waiting for them in the chairs closest to the doors. "Two soldiers who don't care about any humans actually making the effort to sift through our files and come all the way here to save a nobody." Gary rolled his eyes and folded his arms childishly.

"No one asked for your opinion so I suggest you keep it to yourself." Diego spat back instantly, his eyes narrowed at the two suited men that stood before him.

"What made you make all that effort?" Roger asked, his eyebrows raised as if there was an alternative motive to what they had done. "She broke loads of rules. You want her to guide you on missions?"

"Yeah." Jason snapped. "We're alive. That's more than what happened when your actual team were guiding us. In fact, not a single one of them had a brain cell enough to work out there was a blocker on our radios. Did you think we all just got shot and it hit every one of our radios?" Jason tutted and turned his back to the suits. "I'm not wasting my breath, let's go." Diego and Millie turned too and began to leave the court.

"Just wait, Millie. We're gonna make your life a living hell." Roger called back with a venomous tone. "You'll quit after an hour." Millie bit her lips together as she walked out of the building, her happy demeanour broken after only a few minutes of being in the suits' presence. She wondered how they even managed to get jobs with attitudes like that, threatening people and poorly managing teams. On second thoughts, that's probably exactly how they got to where they were. With her eye-line low, she made her way out of the building and stopped by the roadside.

"Thanks for everything. I'm going to head home now." Millie's voice and body language were both downtrodden and upset. Jason and Diego picked up on it in an instant and exchanged worries glances. Diego elbowed Jason and hinted towards Millie. Jason shook his head, once again trying to prove his rock hard exterior couldn't be broken. He was desperate not to let this girl in and he knew it's because he actually quite liked her as a person. Despite never seeing each other, speaking to the same person through the radio for a whole night had opened up his closed mind and heart. He liked her; how she was worried about them both, how she went the extra mile to help them, how she could backchat and was quite open with what she said. Jason liked all those qualities. Not to mention, of course, actually seeing her for the first time today to stick up for her. Despite Millie's situation, she was a very attractive lady - her long brown hair naturally had blonde highlights from the sun, and it was slightly curly. Her eyes were big and blue, her makeup only emphasising them more and making it difficult to look away from them. She had a slim face, with prominent cheekbones and plump lips which combined with everything else had meant she was exactly Jason's type - and both he and Diego knew it.

"Let us walk you back." Diego said as he slammed an elbow into Jason's arm, giving him a disappointed look. Millie looked up at the two men's faces and saw one look of hatred and one look of frustration. Was that because of her? Did she cause them to be like that? Her heart sunk further as she assumed the worst.

"Honestly it's fine but thank you for the offer." She tried to smile. She offered them both a small wave. "Thanks for saving me and everything. Have a good day." She said as she turned her back to them and headed back to her house, tears desperately being held back until she got home and shut the door behind her.

"You're such an idiot." Diego sighed at Jason, who wouldn't meet his eyes. His gaze stayed on his feet.

"I can't do it, man." Jason said depressively as he shook his head.

"You need to open yourself up one day Jase... You can't hide from feelings forever." The two of them began to walk in the opposite direction to Millie, heading back to their base.

"Yes I can." Jason said, sure of himself. He really didn't want to get into this conversation, he knew it would end up messy. "I'm not talking about this." Diego flung his hand onto Jason's shoulder and spun him round to face him, both of them stopping in their tracks.

"Yes we are. This has been going on far too long. She is your type. I could hear you opening up to her now and again in that mission. You can't ignore people just so you have less to lose." Diego said with both hands on Jason's shoulders, his gaze staring into Jason's eyes to try and prove his point.

"I'm not doing this." Jason put his walls up as he pushed Diego's hands off his shoulders and started walking again.

"You like her." Diego pushed as he ran to catch up with Jason. Jason stopped once again and spun around to Diego. Once Diego had stopped too, Jason grabbed his shirt in his fists and pulled him close.

"I've lost too many people. I nearly fucking lost you. I'm not opening myself up to that again just because you think I need to be in a relationship." Jason snapped at Diego. "I'm not losing anyone else!" He repeated before shoving Diego away from him and storming off, leaving Diego in the street alone. He let out a sigh as he brushed himself down and straightened his clothes. This was going to be difficult, but Diego knew he couldn't stop trying. As far as he could tell, they both seemed to need each other.
