Chapter 17

Millie's mouth fell open. Big Boss and Rex were here at her court case? They'd somehow managed to get print outs of the conversation and - wait.
She thought back to what Eli had said to her on the phone just before the case: I've got something planned to help you today. That's free of charge.
Eli had managed to get hold of them and got them to come here. He'd given them the paperwork. He'd tried to save her.

"We'll take a five minute break. Can you two remain behind to talk to me for a second?" Judge Draper ordered, banging his gavel on the desk and causing everyone to disperse quickly.  Millie stood up and was ushered to a separate room from the jurors and the management where she sat by herself once again, caught up in her thoughts. How did Eli know they'd need proof of the conversations? How did he convince the soldiers to come to the hearing? He had a lot of explaining to do when she spoke to him.

Back in the room, Judge Draper read through the proof that Diego and Jason has handed to him. In this paperwork were the conversations taken from the instant messenger service, along with typed versions of some of the conversations they'd had over the intercom systems. In this was proof that Roger disregarded a lot of good suggestions Millie made to save the soldiers, that the management didn't issue any proper resource to rescue them, that Roger had told Rex to leave Big Boss purely because he was unconscious and then the final part where Millie had ordered the ambulance and they threatened her in the office. Once finished reading, Judge Draper looked up at the two soldiers questioningly.

"Excuse the forward question, but normally soldiers wouldn't bother getting involved in this type of case. Why are you getting involved?" Judge Draper raised an eyebrow.

"Judge, this woman did everything in her power to help us get out. She thought outside the box, she checked up on us and we both survived. We've both been in class A missions before and we lose so many soldiers because the people assisting us are stuck to a set of shitty rules given by management." Jason ranted, getting judged hard in the arm by Diego when he swore. "Sorry, my apologies sir." The judge looked them over for a further few seconds. Jason took a deep breath in to calm himself and ran his hand through his black hair.

"So why now?" He asked inquisitively.

"I'm confident that I'd be dead if it wasn't for her. I'm not letting a good member of staff get squashed by the big boots just because she didn't follow their stupid rules." Diego added, his body language confident and slightly aggressive.

"Will this not get you in trouble with-" The judge began but Diego shooed his comments with his hand.

"We're the two best soldiers they have, pardon my french but they'd be fucking stupid to let something like this get in the way of major operations." Diego continued without missing a beat. He eyed the judge as Draper rustled back through the paperwork. "Forgive me, Sir, But were you in the Services?" The Judge looked around before nodding.

"Military." He stated quickly. This must have been something he'd kept to himself, but Diego still picked up in the small telltale signs like his buzz cut and what looked to be a tattoo poking out from under his shirtsleeve.

"We're all here fighting for the world to be better, putting our lives at risk with every mission. These fucking suits come along and think they can Boss us around like they understand what we're going through. Put any of them in the situation we were just in and see if they handle it. We're trained professionals and without Millie, we'd have been dead. They wouldn't last a minute in that shithole we were in." Diego ended, like he'd practiced that speech over and over. He could tell the judge was hooked, there was barely anything those suits would be able to say now that would change the direction this was going. They'd done it.

The doors opened in perfect timing to their conversation ending and Millie walked in with her head down, making her way over to her seat quickly. Judge Draper nodded over to Millie as he looked at the two soldiers, ordering them to sit next to her without using any words. The rest of the court room began to fill again, everyone murmuring about the interruption and soldiers getting involved. Diego and Jason looked at each other as if to build the confidence back up within themselves as they sat beside Millie, causing her to look up quickly.

"Hey." Diego began, holding his hand out. "I'm Diego, Big Boss. It's nice to actually meet you." Millie smiled half-heartedly as she put her hand in his and gave it a weak shake.

"Nice to meet you." She said softly, but almost like she had no energy to say it. Jason gave her a concerned look as he watched this small young woman break down in front of them. These suits had taken the life out of her already and he was going to make sure they didn't ruin another person's life.

"I'm Jason..." he blurted. "Or Rex." For the first time, her eyes seemed to light up. She looked directly at him, as if taking in every feature of the man she had spoken to for a whole night yet had never seen in person. Her eyes met his and for a second she studied them, trying to work out how much they hid of his past. She let out a half smile before she leant closer and took his hand too, shaking it softly.

"Nice to finally meet you. You seem less rude in person." She said bluntly. Diego let out a cackle as Jason smirked, desperate not to show emotion - but both him and Diego knew, that was all the more difficult when you were in front of the person, not talking to them on a radio.

"Order in the court. Let's proceed." Judge Draper banged his gavel once again. "Now, in light of this new evidence, the story that is being told is quite a lot different. For the jury, I will quickly catch you up on what I've just read which was passed to us by the soldiers involved in this mission."
Judge Draper quickly explained everything once more and read out each radio conversation and instant message that was communicated through that night, including Gary threatening her in front of the soldiers. The murmurs in the room grew, along with the odd gasp or tut when Draper read something shocking out. He gave the jury time to confer before asking for their opinions. It was obvious from his facial expressions that he had made his mind up already, but he wanted to hear from the other people in the room.

"We, the jury, find the defendant not guilty. Although she deviated from policies that she should have been aware of, she did it purely to save the lives of soldiers on the field, something we all would have done." One man stood and announced to the room, receiving agreeing nods and smiles from others in the room.

"I concur." Judge Draper began. "Rules are there for a reason but there should also be room for manoeuvre when you're working in such a stressful environment. Baring in mind she was not one of your staff and offered her services to save soldiers lives, I would be inclined to say she more than exceeded in what she came here to do." He said strongly, glaring down at Roger and Gary as if they were flies on shit. "Now, I will be requesting a formal investigation into your management of staff and these missions. Thank you." He banged the gavel once again and the courtroom burst into life. Millie remained seated, staring with an open mouth at Judge Draper as if she couldn't believe what had just happened. Somehow these soldiers and Eli had just saved her job and her life. How was she ever going to repay Eli?
