Chapter 16

The day had come and as Millie looked at herself for the last time in her mirror, straightening her suit skirt and blazer down to get rid of creases, she let out one last hopeless sigh. She didn't know how she would end up reacting when she got to this hearing; she felt betrayed and furious with Roger and she felt that Gary didn't even give her a chance to explain herself. The problem was, they were going to be the only work related people going to this hearing and they were both against her. It was already an unfair race before they'd begun.

"Right, let's do this." She breathed to herself as she finally pulled herself away from the mirror and headed out of the door.

On the way, Millie put her headphones in and blasted her favourite mix of music, drowning out life that was happening around her. This calmed her and as she got off the bus and stood in front of the steps to the court, looking up at the intricate design of the brickwork and the windows, she felt somewhat relaxed - although she knew it wasn't going to last. She headed in with her head held high and checked in with the receptionist, before sitting down at a row of chairs that lined the hallway leading to one of the many rooms they had hearings in. As she sat there, tapping her fingers together as she tried to pass the time, one room door swung open and a couple ran out as if infuriated, the woman breaking down in tears into the others arms.

"How could they say that?" She sobbed into her partners shoulder. "This system is so fucking flawed! Always letting the guilty get away with murder!" She shouted as she sobbed, being soothed by her partner as they led her outside of the building, her anger getting noticeably worse with every step taken.

"Well that's a good sign." Millie whispered to herself as she looked back down at her legs, praying this stupid thing would be over with as soon as possible. Silence filled the entire building again and she took deep, nervous breaths in and out to try and keep calm - that was until her phone went off. The receptionist shot her a glare to say it should be on silent as Millie pulled her bag apart desperately trying to find her phone.

"Hello?" She quickly answered as soon as she found it without looking at the caller ID. Upon re-checking her phone for the ID, she sighed as she saw Eli's name.

"Didn't think you'd answer." He said in an almost smug tone. Millie's stomach dropped as his voice rang in her ears. She really didn't need this right now.

"Eli. No offence, but I really don't need to hear you right now. I'm about to go-" Millie said calmly, but he was quick to interrupt her.

"To your hearing, I know. I can see you." He said, sending a chill down her spine. She looked up at the ceiling and spotted a cctv camera looking directly at her from a few feet away.

"Are you joking? You tapped into a court's cctv to spy on me?" She spat harshly in a whisper, trying not to let anyone hear what she was saying or attract attention.

"We still have a deal to settle, just like last time." He said ominously. "If you don't, I'll make your life hell... just like last time." He was clearly enjoying threatening Millie even though he knew the stress she was currently under.

"I know." She breathed out, defeatedly. "But I don't think we'd all be here if it wasn't for you. They're both alive. I know you helped in that and I'll just have to suck it up and pay off the debt." Her leg twitched nervously as she thought about what horrible things he was going to make her do this time.

"Good. I'm glad you've agreed. I've got something planned to help you today. That's free of charge. I'll be in contact again to make arrangements. Good luck in there." Eli said and without giving her a chance to respond, he swiftly hung up. Millie sunk into her chair and let out a huge sigh. This was awful. How did she end up in this situation again? It was bad enough the first time and she'd only needed him to hack something easy for her. This time it was a full scale military operation, she was going to be paying him back for years.

"Amelia Parker?" Millie straightened in her chair at the sound of her full name and looked over to the left, where the voice had come from.  Stood at the door was a tall, older man in a crisp suit who was holding a clipboard. Millie nodded nervously. "Please follow me, it's time for your trial." He said without emotion as he turned on his heels and began to walk off. Millie quickly jumped up and rushed after him, quickly finding herself in a court room full of people she didn't know, and Roger and Gary. She was led to her chair and took a seat shyly, the nerves eating at her gut every second she was in that room. She bit her lips together as she looked up to the ceiling, spotting some cctv cameras in the room. Somehow, that made her feel more at ease. Maybe Eli was going to watch the trial take place too. She finally peeled her gaze from it and back to her lap where she sat with her hands between her thighs, looking like a scolded school child.

"Right let's begin. Please stand." The judge said as he banged his gavel on the desk. Millie shot to her feet. They did introductions and then the judge spoke again. "We are here for a peculiar case. This is the company Nebula against one employee Amelia Parker. Let's begin. Please sit." Millie's legs felt like jelly already and she practically fell to the chair. Her hands were clammy and she felt lightheaded. Gary stood and confidently smirked over to Millie before straightening his suit and beginning.

"Judge Draper, this girl went against direct orders during a class A mission. She confronted the manager of the operation with attitude and no care for the company, disregarded her instructions and made up her own way of dealing with the situation despite never working in that field before. I think it is safe to say that this girl, if she remained in our workplace, would be a liability." Anger built inside Millie instantly, the fire spreading through her veins. How dare they make her sound like she screwed everything over! She had saved two soldiers lives which was more than she could say for those two morons.

"Did she succeed in the end goal of the mission?" Judge Draper asked. His hands clasped on the desk in front of him as he looked between Millie and the two managers of the company.

"Well, in a sense yes but she could have caused more harm than good with her lack of experience. I'd be tempted to call it a fluke." Gary rambled on confidently, like he did one of these every day. "She went against our policy and called an ambulance from her mobile to get one to them, which is now a traceable lead to our building which is meant to be highly secretive and kept out of the public eye. What we do in our jobs prevents members of the public worrying about everything that crops up. We handle them all behind the scenes. She could have blown our cover." Gary said as he glared over at Millie, who was desperately holding back from shouting at them and looking unprofessional.

"Thank you Gary. Amelia, do you have anything to say?" Judge Draper softened as he looked at this young woman who was looking like she was about to have a mental breakdown. Millie took a deep breath and stood up, ready to voice her opinion.

"Sir, I'm not one to bad mouth managers but the whole situation was a disaster. None of the appropriate staff, who knew the systems and policies like the back of their hand, were given an incentive to stay, hence them asking any area in the building for people willing to do unpaid overtime to try and locate some soldiers. Unfortunately, I was the only one who agreed. I work in procurement normally, so the policies that are strict to their area were not familiar to me. I went there with the thought that I wanted to help some people who were in trouble." She looked over to Roger and Gary before back at the judge. "It wasn't long before I realised the radios weren't working because of a blocker. The whole day had been wasted, the entire team was already convinced everyone was dead. A soldier had to go in and disable to blocker and then we were able to contact two soldiers. I was told I had to guide them out of the building and that's what I did. Roger kept passing down messages from management that annoyed the soldiers more. I was just there to help. Most things I suggested or queried were just shot back to me telling me not to question management despite them feeling wrong."

"Interesting." The judge said as he scribbled something down on a notepad. "Do you have any proof of these conversations?" Millie's heart stopped as she realised she didn't but as far as she knew she couldn't print them from the instant messenger.

"No, sir. They were done via the company's instant messenger." She sighed.

"Well, unfortunately without proof, it's very hard for me to make a decision. I can't just decide on 'he said she said'." Judge Draper said, looking at Millie apologetically. She looked towards the two managers who were now grinning at her, knowing they'd won.  "Now if we will just-"

The doors to the room swung open and two men stormed in, their footsteps in perfect synchronicity.

"It can't be..." Gary breathed out, just loud enough for Millie to hear. She kept her eyes on these two men.

"Who are you and why are you interrupting my case?" Judge Draper snapped angrily.

"Diego Aurora and Jason Tretchly, known to these three as Big Boss and Rex." Diego announced as he slammed papers on the desk. "And this is the proof you need."
