Chapter 15
All of the team were running on adrenaline. There was nothing they could do other than fight their way out, and now that Rex had already got rid of half the soldiers, it finally felt like an end was in sight. Eli continued to scour the cctv whilst Millie listened out for anything whilst watching cctv too.
"Where's best to head next?" Rex asked as he leant against a wall to take a quick breather. He held a hand over his bullet wound and sucked in a sharp breath, attracting both Millie and Eli's attention.
"You sure you're okay to carry on?" Eli asked carefully.
"Just fucking tell me where to go." Rex hissed back, readying his weapon. Eli stifled a laugh.
"Is this how you talk to the ladies? You must be a babe magnet." Sarcasm ran off Eli's tongue as he searched the cctv. "There's two at the corridor on your left, from there you can follow it round but it leads to the front door and fire exit, which will give you eight soldiers at once." Rex let out a long sigh.
"Eight at once? I guess we'll just have to wait and see." He said ominously as he began his journey round to the corridor on the left, taking out those two soldiers without using his gun. Without hesitation, he headed straight for the doors and the eight soldiers. Eli tapped away furiously on his keyboard.
"Rex, throw a flash bang and then get ready for night vision." Eli ordered as he typed harshly, making sure everything was in order to work for him. Millie flicked through the rest of the cctv, noting Big Boss stirring under the stairs. Without hesitation, she tapped herself into his frequency. A sigh of relief escaped her as she saw him moving around, albeit dazed and confused.
"Big Boss, it's Millie. Are you okay?" She asked softly, knowing he appreciated her kind nature. He let out a small laugh.
"Ah a friendly voice. I'm okay Millie. What happened?" He stood up and stumbled to the wall, it aiding him to stand up straight.
"You were unconscious, Rex got you down to the ground floor, he's got rid of most of the soldiers, he's fighting the last few now and you'll be able to get out of the front door." Millie said happily, thinking he would be relieved to hear that they were nearly home free but instead he let out an angered growl.
"That man is going to have a lot to answer to. Thank you for being honest. Direct me to where he is now." Big Boss ordered, and as always, she agreed to it. She used the cctv footage to lead him through the winding corridors to where Rex was. A massive flash caught them off guard and then the lights went out. "What the hell?" Big Boss snapped as he snuck through, weapon now readied.
"That'll be Rex and my helping hand. Don't worry. Night vision will help." Millie said confidently and with that Big Boss switched his night vision on. He went down the final two corridors before finally laying his eyes on Rex, trying to take on three soldiers at once, he was taking quiet a beating.
"Thanks Millie. Patch back to him and let him know I'm here. I'll assist from afar." Big Boss ordered. On the cctv, he knelt down and pulled out what looked like a sniper rifle. She quickly switched her frequency back. She could hear the huffs and grunts as Rex fought these three soldiers.
"Big Boss can snipe from behind you, he's at the end of the corridor." Millie said quickly, knowing Rex was concentrating far too much for chit chat. He flung one soldier into the wall as he kneed another, the third jumping him from behind and sending him to his knees. The soldier readied his gun at Rex's head but as Millie gasped in terror, Big Boss took a shot and killed the guy instantly. The body dropped to the floor, giving Rex the chance to grab his knife and stab it into one soldiers thigh as he reached for the dead soldiers gun and shot both soldiers with it. The final two fell to the floor and Rex finally let out a sigh of relief.
"Fucking hell!" He said as he tried to catch his breath. Big Boss hobbled over to him and pulled him up, wrapping their arms around each other. Millie smiled at her phone as she saw the two of them interact with emotion for the first time.
"You're a fool, Rex, risking your life like that!" Boss said as he pulled out of the hug. "You're lucky Millie was paying attention enough to fill me in or you'd have been dead." He slapped Rex's helmet hard, causing him to take a step sideways.
"You were unconscious, what did you want me to do? Have a tea party?!" Rex argued back, shoving him back a bit. This reminded Millie that she needed an ambulance. She quickly got rid of the cctv as she called for emergency services and told them the destination was two roads down from where they were. She didn't know how much she was allowed to disclose so she kept it brief but urged the importance. Once that was done, she brought the cctv back on. They were still arguing.
"We've lost enough people, we didn't need any more!" Big Boss retorted. Rex held his hands up in surrender.
"Alright! You've made your point." He grumbled. "Now let's get out of here." Millie grinned from ear to ear as she watched them leave, so caught up in the moment that she didn't see Roger come back into the room with another suited man. They walked over to her desk just as she was talking.
"I've ordered the ambulance to come to Pugh Street, when you come out of his building, cross the road, head straight down the one in front of you and then do a right. They'll pick you up there." She said, her smile fading as she noted two shadows stretching across her desk. She looked up, saw Roger and the suited man and breathed out a swear word, catching everyone's attention. Roger yanked the headphones out of the port with force, pulling them from Millie's head too.
"Millie, this is Gary, the head boss." He announced to the room. Eli knew this would only end worse if he stayed in the call so he quickly ended it and pulled the cctv feed from her phone. Rex and Big Boss merely stayed quiet and listened. Millie stood up and held out her hand.
"It's nice to meet you Gary." She said nervously.
"I filled him in on your little outburst with me and how you went against direct orders - Gary here has now even witnessed you doing so." Millie bit her lips together as she realised just quite how much trouble she was in. Her eyes stung with tears as they continued.
"I'm afraid, with the nature of this mission, going against our direct orders is an offence worthy of a hearing to judge if you're still fit for your role." Out of the speaker, Rex and Big Boss both scoffed in disbelief.
"Sir, I normally work in procurement, this was unpaid overtime to save soldiers lives - which I just did!" Millie tried to fight her corner but the stern faces of these men meant she knew she was getting nowhere.
"It must be done in a controlled way. Our way. These are times that you cannot go against our orders and make up your own!" Gary's voice boomed as he scolded Millie like a teacher to a school kid.
"She helped us both get out alive which is more than I can say for you suits. Roger was just as fucking unhelpful. Without her we'd both be dead." Big Boss argues through the headset. Gary remained unbothered.
"This is not for argument now. The formal hearing has already been made. Get some rest, Millie, in two days you'll be telling us everything that happened in the hope of saving your career."
