Chapter 12
Rex fell to his knees in front of Big Boss's body. He was sat upright but his head had fallen forwards and his arms were dangling down to the floor.
"Shit. Shit, shit, shit." Rex muttered to himself as he tried to move Big Boss, hoping he would stir awake and make a funny joke - but he didn't. He laid him down on the floor and felt for a pulse. His body relaxed in relief when he felt the faint pulse of Big Boss under his fingertips. "Fucking hell." He breathed out as he sat him back up against the wall.
"Is he okay?" Millie asked carefully, knowing the silence on the other end of the radio probably wasn't for a good reason. Roger was back beside her, listening in to the conversation.
"He has a pulse but I think he's unconscious." Rex said, his voice seemingly sadder than before. Roger shook his head as he unplugged the headset.
"Rex, it's Roger, can you hear me?" The radio was now on loudspeaker in the office so both could hear Rex's orders and respond.
"Yeah." Rex responded quickly.
"I've got orders from management, they said not to risk someone for someone else who is unconscious. They want everyone who has the ability to make it out to get out themselves. They just wanted me to let you know." Roger said, reading the script off a scribbled piece of paper in his hands. Millie tutted and shook her head as Rex barked his response down the headset, the sound blasting through the speakers so loudly, they had to adjust the volume.
"You're fucking kidding me, right?" He began. "Those high up, wouldn't get their hands dirty for anything, dumb ass morons tell you that and you actually think it's a good idea to pass it on? You can shove that fucking speech where the sun doesn't shine. For the last fucking time for you dumb idiots in there: I'm not leaving him." Rex's foul language and mood echoed through the otherwise silent office. Millie and Roger remained silent, unsure as to how to respond.
"He'll need to go to hospital when you get out." Millie said softly, looking between Roger and her computer screen. Roger glared at her as if to warn her of her actions.
"Yes, can this be arranged from our extraction point?" Rex spoke in a softer tone for one of the first times ever. It surprised Millie but also made her more willing to help. She smiled at Roger who merely shook his head in return.
"Probably not, management would pick that up in a heartbeat." Millie began, cut off by Rex's disappointed sigh. "But no one would be monitoring a standard emergency call from a mobile. I could get one there, I'd suggest maybe a road or two away just in case they're still coming after you." Millie typed away on her computer, bringing up a local map of the area. She zoomed in to the area Rex was in and began tracing the roads and alleyways until she found a good one.
"Millie, I don't think this is a good idea. If management found out you could be dismissed and-" Roger began. Millie held her hand up to his face to silence him.
"I don't know about you Roger, but the reason I stayed doing this overtime was to help as many people out alive as possible. If you want to disregard someone who is unconscious then maybe you need to go home." Millie's tone was harsh for the first time in her career and she felt it afterwards. Her body was shaking, as was her voice and her throat felt rough. She'd never raised her voice to management before and she didn't really know what caused her to this time - she supposed she must have gained some sort of weird relationship with these soldiers and desperately wanted to help them. Roger straightened where he stood, feeling embarrassed as a junior member of staff - who wasn't even in his team - raised her voice to him. Knowing Rex was listening in, he felt the need to prove his authority.
"Millie, first off please never raise your voice or your hand in my face again. Second, I'm just doing what management have said and you should listen to that too. This could cause you to get fired and -" Roger's voice was getting louder and more frustrated, he slammed a hand on the desk beside Millie, making her jump. She let out a harsh laugh.
"Fire me? For saving two lives? Go on then!!" She stood up, her computer chair wheeling itself backwards with the force of her getting up. She held her hands out as if to say to Roger to prove he was going to follow through with his actions. Luckily for him, his phone began to ring.
"It's management, we will pick this up when I come back." He said sternly as he walked away to a different part of the office. Millie let out a huge sigh as she sat herself back down and plugged her headphones back in to the radio.
"Sorry about that. It was very unprofessional." She apologised to Rex who was frozen in surprise at what he'd heard over the headset.
"Can you guys just leave this until we've got out of here?" His harsh words were back and Millie's shoulders sunk as her heroic actions weren't thanked or acknowledged by him at all. He was back to his old, snappy self. "I've got two more floors to get down now and I'll be carrying Boss around. I need you on it. I need you to help me as if you were stood beside me, not having childish arguments with your manager." Millie took a second to compose herself at her desk before she responded.
"Of course, sir, I'm sorry." Rex leant against the wall as Millie apologised, letting out a long sigh. He was grateful that she had stuck up for them but he just couldn't bare to say it. If he said that, she'd be thankful and talk to him more, then he'd like her and it would become yet another relationship he could lose. He couldn't bare that. He kept only two people close; Big Boss and a childhood friend who lived across the country that he rarely saw. That was enough. He was always scared of losing them. He couldn't handle a third person to worry about.
"I'm about to head down the stairs with Boss. I need you to be an extra set of ears in case I need anything. If we can get down these two flights, we will be home free. I'll just need that ambulance." Rex voices his orders to Millie who took more straight away. She looked at the clock and saw it was nearing 6am. They'd literally been helping all night. The finish line was now in sight. That thought gave Millie an idea.
"Rex, please wait there for another second I just need to call someone." Millie said quickly, not giving him a chance to respond. He let out a loud irritated huff. She quickly pulled her mobile out and dialled someone without hesitation.
"Millie. This is a surprise." The man sounded cocky as he answered the phone, causing Millie to roll her eyes.
"I know Elijah. I need your help." Her voice was strong and confident. He let out a small laugh.
"Last time you needed my help-" He began but she shut him off.
"That doesn't matter now. I need your help, you gonna do it?"
