Chapter 8
Katherine felt bipolar. One moment she would be raging mad at her father for what he'd done to Jack, and the next second she'd be all warm and fuzzy knowing he hadn't left on purpose, then in then next second she'd be angry at Jack for every thing he had put her through. It was ridiculous. She couldn't sit still either, she was hyper and anxious about Jack and Peter just out side on the fire escape. What was gonna happen? She knew for a fact that both Peter and Jack had a history of picking fights people who they disagreed with. Jack had always been the one to either stop the fighting, or start it. Peter wasn't much different. Katherine remembered on more than on occasion Peter coming home with a black eye because the other boy had said his drawings were stupid, Katherine had to pay for the other boys stitches. It wasn't like Peter was a violent kid, he just stood up for himself and wouldn't take crap from any one. Katherine craned her neck around the corner and peeked out on to the fire escape, it was dark and she had to squint to see the vague out lines of Jack and Peter. She let out a big breath and leaned her head back against the wall, what a strange turn in events her life had taken in the last few hours she thought back to this morning and how she had boughten Peter his new pencils that seemed like so long ago. It was kinda funny, to Katherine this morning seemed like forever ago but that one night so many years ago, felt like yesterday. She could clearly remember what they had been fighting about, how could she forget? That fight had changed her life forever, the fight really had been stupid, they'd argued about her father many times before and that fight hadn't been much different from the rest, well, except for the part where she got pregnant. It was the usual "Your the one who lied about your name!" And the "He's the most powerful man in New York what did you expect me to say?!" Were just a few of the things they argued about. It was the same-old-same-old try to see who could raise the others shackles the highest. Now that she looked back on it they had fought quite a bit like that, almost every day after all they were both very stubborn and persistent, neither wanting to give in to the other. That's why she surprised her self when she had yanked him towards her and crashed their lips together, she hadn't been planing on that but it seemed like the only way to get them to stop yelling. They had been in a similar situation before, back on the roof of the Logging House just before the end of the strike nine years ago, arguing about the strike and her "lies" when she had been so peeved an almost ridiculous thought crossed her mind "Get his attention, you know what will give him your attention" it had told her, so almost on instinct she had grabbed his face and pulled his lips to hers in a very short passionate kiss. Then, he had tried to kiss her back but she had pushed him away before he could. But that particular night she didn't pull away, and she let him kiss her back. She could remember feeling her heart beat from the tips of her fingers to the tips of her toes pounding like a giant bee trapped inside a drum. She'd never felt more alive in her entire life. When it all came down to it Katherine couldn't bring herself to regret what had happened, she couldn't imagine what her life would have been like for nine years of it weren't for Peter. Katherine knew for a fact if he hadn't come along she would have shattered years ago. She would have shattered the first time she herd the news of Jack departure, (in fact, she kinda did) if she hadn't learned she was pregnant five days later. That week had been a blur in some parts and vibrant and downright terrifying at other times. The blurry part had been when her father had told her Jack had left she hadn't believed him at first but when the reality of it hit her she went numb every where, her body physically rejecting the news. The terrifying part had been when her father found out she was pregnant. Katherine cringed as the memory burned bright in her mind.
**********FLASH BACK***********
Katherine pulled the covers tighter around her body as the doctor loomed over her. Pulitzer stood back a few feet seemingly annoyed at the time it was taking the doctor to find out what was wrong with her. His hands were clasped behind his back and he was rocking back and forth on his heels making his glasses flash in the light of her bedroom window. Katherine was hardly paying attention to the old doctor he seemed nice, he was probably in his late 70's with thinning gray hair and sparkling grey eyes, she just couldn't concentrate her head span and every so often her stomach would clench in nauseating pain. She hadn't felt well the last few weeks, but it had gotten worse the last two days. It didn't help that her body had shut down into full depressed mode, she couldn't keep her mind away from Jack. Why had he left? She couldn't comprehend his sudden departure just five days ago he had been here in her apartment kissing her and making her feel better. He had left that night with a promise to see her in the morning. Had she missed something? Had she been so blind as to see something missing from their relationship? No, it couldn't be, yet, why had he left? Another wave of nausea hit her and she winced in pain clutching her stomach.
"What's wrong with her doc?" Pulitzer asked impatience clear in his voice. The doctor pursed his lips and straitened up so he could face him.
"Could I have a word with your daughter? Alone." He asked, Pulitzer nodded and stepped out into the hall shutting the door behind him. The doctor fixed his sad eyes on Katherine again and he pulled a chair up from her desk so he could talk to her easier.
"Miss Pulitzer, how long have you been feeling ill?" He asked, Katherine pulled the blanket away from her face so she could answer.
"The past few weeks or so." She said her voice was thick from crying. Thats another thing she had been doing, crying. There had been moments where she'd spontaneously burst into tears with out any warning. The doctor ran a hand over his face.
"Well Miss Pulitzer, if my instincts are good, which they are, and my hunch is correct, I suspect you are with child." He said somberly. Katherine eyes widened and she sat straight up in her bed.
"What?" She asked, the doctor shook his head.
"I have a lot of experience with this kind of stuff and every thing points to that." He said his eyes filled with age-old sadness. Realization hit her full in the face.
"Oh no, no, no, no! That can't be true me and Jack..." she trailed off her eyes stinging with new tears.
"You know who the father is?" He asked, Katherine nodded gloomily and plopped back down on her pillow. She pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes wiling the tears to stay away but they had there own idea. The began to leak down her face. The kind doctor got up from his chair and grabbed his medical kit. She couldn't be pregnant...
"I'm 17" she choked out. Her panic raising higher than The World building. "I-I can't do this, t-there's no w-way." She struggled to say the words, she felt like her throat was swelling and blocking off her air. The doctor rested a hand on her shoulder reassuringly.
"What's done is done, I wish I was wrong Katherine I truly do. But know you need to sleep. Stress is bad for the child, I will tell your father. Pray to heaven he will understand." He said quietly. Katherine let out a sound that sounded halfway between a sob and an "okay" the doctor left the room quietly and Katherine could hear her fathers voice from in her living room.
"Well, what's wrong?" he asked no doubt he wanted to get it over with so he could get back to work. She herd the doctor sigh deeply.
"Your daughter has some hard times ahead of her." He said sadly.
"Never mind that, how much do I owe you?" Katherine heard the rustle of paper, money maybe? She felt a rush of anger toward her father, never mind that? Did he even care?
"Your daughters pregnant." The doctors said, the rustling of paper stopped abruptly.
"She's what?" He asked rage replacing his annoyance.
" You heard me its been confirmed and she knows who the father is." The doctor said opening the door.
"Kelly" Pulitzer spat. Katherine cringed at the hate he put into that name.
"I'll be back in a month you can pay me then, oh and Joe? She's just a girl, don't treat her like a business arrangement." The doctor closed the door behind him. Katherine held her breath and counted to 30, the house was deadly quite, until the yelling started. Now, Katherine had seen her father angry, she'd seen him get angry at clients and she'd seen him shout profanities at editors and reporters. Heck, he'd even yelled at her for climbing in his chair when she was a little girl she had been scared then. She was down right horrified now.
"Katherine Pulitzer!!" His voice boomed through the house. Katherine curdled her legs against her self and attempted to prepared herself. He stormed into her room his face masked with rage.
"It's Kelly's isn't it?" He asked through his teeth.
"Yes." She whispered feeling hot tears run down her cheeks.
"How could you be so stupid?!? Oh, I will kill that boy if I ever see him again." He snapped and began to pace back and forth across her room. She watched him like a trembling rabbit trapped in a corner about to be fed to to wild crows. "When did you guys do it? And how the hell did I not know?!?" He asked, Katherine could feel waves of anger rolling off his body. Katherine sniffed and wiped her nose, wow, she was a wreck.
"About six weeks ago." She sniffled fearing what he would do if she didn't answer. "I didn't know I would get pregnant, I swear we just..." she trailed off, it was true the fact that a child could be a possible out come never once crossed her mind.
"What did I tell you?" He asked, she looked up at him. He had stopped pacing and was now glowering down at her. "I told you all he wanted was to get under your skirts! I can't believe you were foolish enough to let him!" He shouted, Katherine's body shook and she reached up to press her hands to her ears trying to block her father out. She clearly remembered the conversation she had with her father just after her and Jack had started dating. He had gone into a big lecture that Katherine tried to forget, it had taken and entire hour to finish. "I do not have time for this!" Pulitzer snapped, "I'll deal with you later." He called and stormed out of the room. She curled up in a ball on her bed shaking like a leaf, what was she gonna do? She was so alone, why did Jack leave? She pressed a hand to her stomach 'maybe your not completely alone' a little voice whispered in her head, 'Jacks still with you, you've got part of him inside you' The thought caused a spark of hope to light inside her chest, it was right, even if Jack was gone she still had him with her, the thought should have terrified her but it didn't, she found odd comfort in the fact he left her with something precious.
*******END OF FLASH BACK******
The sound of the window being yanked open and the clatter of footsteps snapped her out of her thoughts. She straightened up as Peter came around the kitchen door Jack right behind him. Peters face lit up at the sight of her, Jacks face was hard to read but Katherine didn't miss the guilty glint in his eyes as Peter hugged her tightly. Katherine kneeled down so she could hug the boy back.
"You okay?" She whispered in his ear. He shook his head silently and hugged her tighter. Katherine looked up at Jack and held her hand out to him, he took it and she pulled him down so he could hug the two. 'Your gonna be okay' the voice said in her head. She smiled and pulled the two closer to her, for right now, she was gonna be okay. She hoped.
