Chapter 2

When Katherine woke up again it was very dark out side and you could faintly hear the soft sounds of New York city though the apartment walls. She sat up from the couch spitting a mouth full of her hair out, she groaned and stretched her aching muscles apparently they didn't agree with her latest sleeping arrangement. She glanced around the empty apartment apparently David and Peter hadn't gotten back yet, Katherine couldn't imagine what they were still doing. Worry set in her chest as she thought of her little boy out side by himself, she hopped they were all right. She tapped her fingers anxiously, Katherine trusted David but nothing could calm her maternal instincts, not even David. Katherine got up from the couch running her fingers through her hair trying to calm her curly tangles. She made her way to Peters room and peered inside, his bed was a mess as always and his trousers and shirts were piled in a corner. Katherine clicked her tongue as she took in his littered floor, crumpled up papers laid across the room it looked like he had been trying to draw something but kept messing up so he crumpled the paper up and chucked it, much like what Katherine does when writing an article. She spotted his sketch pad laying face down on his pillow and curiosity got the best of her she crossed to his un made bed and flipped the pad over. It was a rough drawing of her, Peter, and David smiling like nothing bad had ever happened to any one, the faces seemed almost fuzzy to Katherine like she was seeing them under water. She then relished she was crying and her tears were making it fuzzy, she wiped her face and sat on his bed staring at the picture. As she looked at the picture David's words rang in her head, "The kid needs a father and sense he doesn't have one, he at least deserves to know why." Those words triggered a memory from a few years ago, a memory she hadn't relished she was trying to forget.

*********Flash Back**********

"Why are you here?" Katherine asked her father stiffly, they stood in the door way to her kitchen.

"I have a grandson do I not?" He said walking to the kitchen table where the six year old Peter doodled on a napkin. Katherine narrowed her eyes in black suspicion.

"What do you want?" She asked ignoring his statement. Pulitzer sighed at her question and straitened his tie.

"Why do you always think I want something?" He asked.

"Your not the kind of person to drop by just to see there grandson, or there daughter for that matter." She said crossing her arms. Pulitzer pulled his spectacles off and wiped them absentmindedly on his black suit coat.

"True. The reason I came was because I need to speak with you." Pulitzer said putting his glasses back in place.

"Talk about what?" Katherine said skeptically. Pulitzer pulled a chair out from the table and sat down so he was facing her.

"It has come to my attention that you spend an awful lot time in his place here," he said gesturing to the apartment "and that your reporting career is at a low point." He said lacing his finger in his lap. Katherine studied him not sure where he was going with this.

"Business has been slow, not much to write about these days" Katherine said sitting in the seat across from her father. Pulitzer shook his head.

"When business is slow, money is slow, and you need money to live." He said, Katherine rolled her eyes, of course you needed money to live, where was he going with this? "I can't keep paying your bills Katherine. Look, my point is I think it's time you find a husband, someone to pay the bills." He said. Katherine's jaw dropped and she made a disgusted sound in the back of her throat.

"A husband! Are you insane?" She cried jumping up from her seat, Peter glanced up at her curiously from across the table. "You have to be joking." Pulitzer shook his head.

"No my dear I am not."

"Well it's not going to happen!"

"Yes Katherine, I think it's time it does happen."

"You can't say that! I make my own choices." Katherine retorted, horrified at the thought of a husband, just because Jack had left didn't mean she still didn't love him. Pulitzer sighed and rubbed his fore head.

"Yes, and we all know where those choices have lead us now." He said still rubbing his head like he had a head ach. Katherine glance to Peter then back to her father.

"That's not the point, I can make my own choices, I have a brain." Katherine snapped.

"Did you have a brain when you chose to sleep with Kelly?" Pulitzer asked his tone cold. Katherine clenched her jaw and glared daggers down at her father.

"Why do you always have to bring that up?" She hissed.

"Because," he said "I know that's the only way you'll listen to me."

"That was six years ago Dad, get over it!" She said darkly.

"Yes I know, and do you plan to lie to Peter about Jack for the rest of his life?" He asked, Peter looked up from his drawing curiously. Katherine gripped Pulitzers arm and yanked him out of his seat and into the living room so Peter couldn't hear.

"Don't you even bring that up! Hurting me is one thing, but hurting my kid is a whole nether story!" She said through her teeth.

"Mom?" It was Peter he stood in the door way looking confused. Katherine released her grip on her fathers arm and stepped back. "What's wrong?" Peter asked reaching out to grab Katherine's red skirt. Katherine grabbed him and pulled his small frame against her.

"Nothing son, your grandfather was just leaving." Katherine said with out emotion. Pulitzer pressed his lips together in a tight line, he nodded to them both and exited out the front door with out another glance in their direction. Katherine kneeled down so she was level with her sons face.

"We're you guys arguing about me?" Peter asked sadly. Katherine's face softened and she ran a hand through his black hair.

"No, my father just likes things to go his way and when they don't he gets angry." She explained.

"How come you hate him?" Peter asked, Katherine winced slightly maybe she should learn not to talk crap about Pulitzer around Peter anymore.

"I don't hate him, we just disagree about a lot of things." She said softly.

"Would I have liked mine? My Dad I mean" he said, Katherine sighed she had been hoping to avoid this conversation. She wondered how to answer that question. Should she lie? She'd already lied about so many other things, after a moment of contemplation she decided to go with honesty.

"You would have loved him, and he would have loved you. You look just like him you know? Same hair, same eyes, heck you even have his jaw line." Katherine said poking him in the stomach playfully, he chuckled and swatted her hand away.

"Davey told me he died." Peter said sadly, Katherine pursed her lips.

"Yea, yea h-he did, in a building collapse before you were born." She said stuttering out the lie.

"Davey also said both of you were very young." He said stuffing his hands in his pockets. Katherine often marvels at how smart he was, he may have been young but that didn't stop him from knowing what was going on.

"He was correct, I was 17 your father was 18, we were young and stupidly in love. What else did David tell you?" Katherine asked warily.

"Nothing. Just that he knew you missed my Dad." He said shrugging, Katherine grabbed both of his hands and made him look up at her.

"I do miss him, but I have you and that's enough." She said with a smile, his face reflected hers and he hugged her tightly. 'If only Jack were here' a voice echoed in her mind and she knew the voice was right, if only...

*****End Of Flash Back******

Katherine was pulled out of her thoughts by the door opening.

"Katherine?" The voice whispered loudly, it was David. She hurried out of Peters room and gasped when she saw Peter passed out over David's shoulder.

"Oh, David what happened?" She asked hurting over panicked.

"Relax Kath he's just sleeping, I took him to Newsies Square then we went back to my apartment and hung out with Clara he fell asleep so I decided it was time to bring him home." David said stepping past her towards his room. 'Yea, no kidding' she thought as he set him on the bed. Peter rolled over his eyes fluttering and David pulled his shoes off and yanked the covers up to his chin.

"Thanks David" she said giving him a quick hug "he sure loves you." She whispered, David stood next to her and gazed down at the sleeping child folding his arms.

"I know" he said "I love the kid too but I'm not his father, and he needs to know that." David said seriously.

"He knows your not his father, he knows what happened to his." She said then winced when she relished her words. "Well he knows what's best for him" she said at David's frown. David shook his head and headed out of the room, Katherine at his heels. David turned to look at her opening his mouth to say something, then thinking better about it he snapped it shut and gave her a quick hug instead.

"Talk to you tomorrow." He said opening her front door.

"Okay" she called with a wave of her hand. She turned and studied her spotless living room, it looked to empty. She yawned and headed for her own room looking foreword to sleeping in in the morning.
