Chapter 27. | Baby Clown
The Joker couldn't remember when he was as nervous as he was that night. He was a scared even. No, not scared; he was terrified.
Three months had passed since the Arkham incident, Harley's pregnancy had reached the eight month and being able to finally reside in their own home had brought comfort to the now very round blonde harlequin, who despite the cold november weather, felt like she had been thrown out into the Sahara dessert.
The green haired clown didn't seem to care or notice his wife's complaints, always ready with a nice ice cold grape soda and a fan, himself wrapped under three layers of clothing. J actually thought it was rather comical and as long as his Harley Quinn was happy and at ease, he felt satisfied, even his cold feet served as a nice comfort to her warm body.
And it was just one of those nights when neither of them could sleep that it happened, as unexpected as they were. The cold rain's sound was silenced by a shriek and a moan, followed by the loudest: "PUDDIN!"
"What is it?!" J sat up, nearly jumping out of bed. Harley's face contorted as she gasped when a sharp wave of pain travelled from her belly to her lower back and beyond.
"I think she's coming!" she managed to say between heavy breaths, a thin layer of sweat forming on her forehead.
"What the fu–"
"Don't fucking swear, Puddin!" J had to hold back a nervous chuckle and moved carefully closer to his wife to help her get out of bed when another contraction hit her, "Shit, Lucy! Give mommy a break!"
Joker's first reaction was to call Bruce. They had it all planned since Harley was supposed to get a c-section, not being able to give birth naturally because of her spine injury but this changed everything, they weren't expecting Lucy to come out earlier.
Having a billionaire associate had its benefits on these type of emergencies and so, within the next half an hour, Bruce arrived on his personal helicopter, ready to take them to the nearest hospital away from Gotham City where hopefully no one would recognize the clown couple.
"Looking good, Joker!" said Bruce as they made their way with difficulty towards the helicopter. Between all the fuss to get ready, Joker had managed to get into the first clothing he could find, which included green sweatpants, his purple leather long coat and a hat to cover his green hair. "I'm sure no one will recognize you with those clothes!" added Bruce.
J rolled his eyes as he helped Harley getting in, "Oh shut up, Bats," he said, fumbling with the belts, wrapping them around Harley, "Just because you don't know any color other than black doesn't mean eve–"
"Could you two stop talking about fashion?! I'm having a baby, damnit!" screamed Harley at both men who watched her wide eyed.
So, between screams and heavy breathing, coming from Harley and J in unison, they arrived at a hospital located in the nearest city. Lucky they were no one seemed to notice the trio that had just crossed the doors to the ER, Harley being admitted immediately for surgery.
"We will start the procedure with the epidural and the pain will stop, honey." said the anesthesiologist, who in the eyes Joker looked like a little girl playing doctor.
"I don't trust her, she looks like she just got out of med school." whispered J to Harley as soon as the doctor finished blocking the lower part of her body, the pain already gone, leaving the harlequin in the most unusual calm state.
"Puddin, calm down." Harley reassured him, reaching for J's hand. She grinned, eyeing him from head to toe, "you look so handsome on surgery clothes, baby. You would have been a breathtaking sexy doctor."
Just when he was about to answer, the surgeon entered the operating room along with his team of nurses and residents. J rolled suddenly felt the blood from his head run down to his stomach and feet, feeling dizzy and suffocated. He looked down at Harley with adoration, fear being replaced by pride and love for the woman that had turned his entire universe upside down.
Thirty minutes had passed since the surgery started, the longest half an hour J had experienced in his life, fighting the urge to stab one of the nurses to force the surgeon to work faster, when the crying of a baby made his heart stop and his surroundings disappeared.
"This is probably one of the most beautiful and healthy baby girls I have ever seen!" the doctor cheered sweetly.
Carved in his memories forever, not even the strongest ECT could make him forget the moment when the nurse approached them with Lucy, covered in blood and crying at the top of her tiny lungs. J's hands shook uncontrollably when he cut the umbilical cord, finally separating the baby girl from Harley.
As soon as Lucy was placed on her father's protective strong arms, she stopped crying. It was like the baby girl was instantly connected to him, a bond stronger than anything he had ever felt.
"She looks so much like you, Puddin." Harley said as he leaned down carefully so she could kiss Lucy's head.
"Thank you, baby." J said before kissing his wife lovingly, "My two treasures. My perfect girls."
A few hours later, as Harley slept soundly on the hospital bed, the crazy clown that had tormented Gotham City, the man that had done the most evil things, now sat cradling a little sleeping pink ball on his arms, possessiveness and admiration spread all over his face.
Joker memorized every single inch of her tiny features. He knew it was too soon to determine if she looked like him or Harley, but it felt like looking at his former younger self. Lucy already had some light brown hair, a tiny perfect nose and pink lips curled up on what to J looked like a mischevious smile.
"We are going to have so much fun together, little one." he whispered, bringing her tiny head up to his lips, "I'm going to make you so happy, your life will be a wonderful experience and I will be your best friend, your protector."
It was like Lucy understood her father's words. She opened her eyes and stared directly at him, her ice blue pools melting him completely.
"I'll do anything for you, baby clown."
