Chapter 21. | Goodbye, dear friend
The door opened. A familiar –yet not friendly– face appeared before Harley's eyes, who held a sleeping Alfred tightly close to her body, protecting him from the man that slowly walked towards her and crouched to grab her by the arm.
"Get away from me!" she spat, trying to get away from his grasp, waking Alfred slightly up as she moved, but he was too weak to help or even react properly, "He needs me please!"
"The Captain asked for you." said Frost, his usual indifferent and cold voice piercing through her ears. Harley had never liked the man, too serious and reserved to himself, she always knew he was not to be trusted. But her Puddin did and her blood boiled inside her at the thought of his betrayal.
"Your Captain can go to hell." said Harley as Frost managed to drag her out from the room and through the large corridors.
"I'm sure he will go to hell. So am I, and J... and you." he mumbled and stopped on his tracks, turning her deliberately but gently, "How could you do this to yourself, Quinn? Bringing a child to your world. Did you think that you and the Joker would live happily ever after, with a little clown running around the house while you baked cookies for your husband as he read a newspaper that no longer held news about his crimes? I had that wish too and guess what? Nothing has changed."
Harley could catch a glimpse of sadness and remorse in his words, but she ignored them. "He trusted you with his life, Johnny. J considered you a friend, I bet you were his only family before he met me. Why would you do that to him?"
Frost laughed bitterly and darted his eyes away from her. "I have asked myself the same question for the last four months, Harley." he said, speaking her name for the very first time, his face softening. The harlequin frowned and realized that Johnny Frost regretted his betrayal on his former boss.
"Help me." she whispered, "Help us get out of here, Frost."
Johnny turned his face at the end of the aisle. The softness on his face disappeared, replaced by an evil grin drawing at the corner of his lips.
"If I didn't like you before, I'm definitely not liking you now. What makes you think I'm helping you out?" he said, his voice cold as ice as he grabbed Harley's arm harshly and dragged her towards the room where Daemon was waiting.

"I'm losing my patience here. Tell me where they are or I swear I'll tear your stomach open and I'm gonna knit a bloody crochet sweater with your guts!" The Joker hissed, his knife pressed against the man's throat, ready to slit. But the henchman shook his head, unable to say a word due to the intense dread he was experiencing as his ex boss brushed the sharp object from his neck, to his chest, to his stomach.
"One..."
"Please don't!" the man screamed.
"Two..."
"Joker!" Batman interrupted him as he entered the abandoned night club.
The clown sneered at the trembling man and pushed him to the nearest wall, his hand wrapped tightly around his neck. "One last time: where is Daemon?"
"Cobblepott's, the sewers." he choked, his eyes turning red as J's grasp got tighter around him, "please let me go, I'll do anything!"
The Joker shuffled his gaze from the scared man to Batman and back. He finally groaned and threw the henchman to the ground, fighting the urge to kick his face.
"You–" said the Joker as he strapped him and muzzled him, "are coming with us."

"Is it a boy or a girl?" said Daemon with a mocking grin. Harley stood silently trying to avoid eye contact with him, her hands resting protectively on her stomach.
"You know, it's rude not to answer when a question is being asked to you." he walked closer to her and his arm circled her waist, pulling her close as he inhaled her scent. "I never stopped thinking about you, puppet. My arms holding you close to my body, your bones breaking. It was so romantic."
"Get away from me." she warned and he laughed, holding her even tighter.
"No, I don't think I will."
Harley felt his cold hand travel from her stomach to her breast. She could have kicked him right in the act if she wasn't still so defenseless, so useless. A tear escaped from her eyes as the Captain touched her, his lips meeting her neck. She silently prayed and hoped her clown would burst into the room and kill the man, but deep inside Harley knew she was in great danger and no Joker would come to her rescue in time.
Daemon pushed her towards a couch, moving over her and then she panicked, her brain slowly processing what he was trying to do, making her sick.
"Tell me where they are." he mumbled against her skin, his hand pulling her shirt up as he harshly undressed her, Harley's kicks and screams being nothing for the strong and bulky man. "Tell me where your pathetic clown boyfriend and his bat friend are and I will stop."
A loud bang was heard and an explosion bursted the door into pieces. In instants, Daemon was pulled away from Harley's body and tackled to the ground; the harlequin's heart skipped a beat when she saw the Joker beating and smashing Daemon's head against the cold floor.
"I'm going to rip your heart out and feed it to the sharks!" J screamed as reached for his gun and pressed the muzzle between Daemon's confused eyes. The Captain turned his face towards the door where Batman stood, spotting the bodies of the bruised and unconscious henchmen laying all over the corridor, Johnny Frost standing beside the dark knight holding a large machine gun.
"Look at me!" J demanded as he pressed his gun harshly against Daemon's skull. "Game over, Captain Hook. We're taking you back to Neverland."
The Joker threw one last blow to his face, which was bleeding profusely and let the Batman deal with the bruised man. He then turned his attention to the sobbing girl sitting on the couch and wasted no time in wrapping his arms around her trembling body as he kissed her head repeatedly.
"I'm here, baby. Daddy's here." he whispered, pulling away from her to examine her body, "Are you hurt?"
Harley nodded, "I'm okay but Alfred is hurt, Puddin. We have to help him, he's bleeding. That bastard shot him!"
Frost led them to the room where Alfred sat, barely alive. As the Joker helped the old man, Daemon managed to release himself from Batman's grasp.
Bang!
Seconds, it all happened in seconds.
Daemon shot his mechanical arm, aiming for the clown but, unexpectedly, Frost interposed between the two men, receiving the bullet for the Joker. With a swift move, Batman threw a 'Smileyrang' at Daemon, who finally fell to the ground, paralyzed.
"Boss, I'm so sorry." whispered Johnny as J kneeled beside his dying body, holding his hand tightly in mutual understanding. The Joker watched in silence as Frost's grip became weaker and his eyes closed slowly, his breathing getting slower and slower until they stopped.
"Goodbye," he whispered, "dear friend."
