Chapter 2. | The Purple Piano

Harley found herself standing by the entrance of The Cube.

The Cube was an empty room J often used for torturing and isolation. It was dark, walls pitch black, cold and so narrow you could end up being claustrophobic, just by taking a quick look inside. It was completely bloodcurdling. Victims and disobedient henchmen had ended up there, crying desperately for their lives. Some were lucky to get out of there barely alive, a minority.

Harley laid a hand over the quote, carved on the ruby door:

'The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within our souls.'

"Edgar Allan Poe..." she whispered to herself with a smirk. A suitable quote for such an eerie place. It reminded her of Arkham's seclusion rooms, except those were white and cushioned. Inside The Cube, there was nothing but ebony bricks that wouldn't soften the blow.

Harley pushed the door open and closed it behind her once she entered the room. Complete utter darkness and quiet. That's what she needed. She sat on the floor, knees close to her chest.

She felt so confused lately she was probably losing her mind... again. Mister J was acting strange, cheerless and the lack of interest for mischief and destruction was alarming. All that was replaced by loving kisses, overprotection, endless nights and days tangled under the blankets. It was upsetting how normal things were.

'But that's what you wanted, wasn't it?' said a voice inside her head. 'Stop complaining and enjoy it before his usual heartless clown comes back.'

Harley groaned loudly and hit her own head with her closed fist as the voiced continued to scream at the back of her head.

'Yes! That's what I wanted...'

'...but he's a despicable villain, just accept it, Harley! As soon as he get bored and tired of his new sweet and corny temporary attitude he would go back to normal. Why get used to it and be disappointed?!'

'Silly girl...'

"Stop it!" she screamed and let the tears run down her cheeks as she laughed loudly and cried at the same time. Then, a soothing sound brought her back to reality. A piano.

J's fingers danced over the keys as he played a sad tune. It was probably fifteen years ago when he last touched a piano, so now he enjoyed his new acquisition. A beautiful purple grand piano.

As the melody filled his brain with an hypnotic effect, he started daydreaming and it brought a sharp pain to the hole where his heart was supposed to beat. He saw a beautiful woman standing by a pier, rubbing her large belly, smiling. It was a beautiful sunset and her brown hair swirled around, making her look like a mermaid underwater. As soon as her green eyes met his, she smiled warmly, extending her free hand to him.

He looked down at his own hand as he reached for her belly, the tattooed grin gone. His skin a normal shade.

"Jack..." her voice was soft and melodic. His gaze went down to her stomach where his hand now rested. This woman, she seemed so familiar but he dared not remember her name.

"The baby. Can you feel it?"

He felt himself smile, feeling an indescribable joy. But as soon as he focused his attention back to the pregnant woman before him, he felt his heart stop when he saw her now covered in blood, her deadly glazed eyes looking back at him, a creepy smile spread across her face.

"You know how to make me laugh..." she whispered.

He felt a warm hand touch his face which made him wake up abruptly from the nightmare. J stood up violently, still blinded by the dream and out of instinct he wrapped his large hand around Harley's neck, who let out a muted shriek.

To her surprise, as he reacted to his surroundings, the Joker let go of Harley's neck, kneeled before the petite blonde girl and wrapped his strong arms around her waist, burying his face against her belly.

What happened next just shocked her. The clown started crying.
