Who? (Part 1)
Section 1:
Finally, some good sleep. My head resting peacefully on the pillow of my bed. No one entirely knows how such a small villager like myself was capable of climbing up onto the top-bunk and into the spare bed in the house; but, I managed to pull it off every night... If only he wasn't there to ruin my perfectly good night of sleep.
As if on que, I heard the creak of a door, and one tired footstep followed by another. I listened-in fearfully as the sound of iron armor being dismantled and placed sloppily on the floor made the wooden floor boards creak. I heard my older roommates stir in their state of half sleep, but not wake fully. Oh.. why me? Why can't he bother the others?! Why does, out of everyone here, the human have to bother me?!
In a blur of several shades of blue, a large form rose to my level, climbing in a memorized pattern into my bed. I groaned in annoyance but didn't fight back as the entirety of my small form was scooted to the foot of the bed. In an instant, my face was met with stinky, calloused feet. The human settled in a little more, curling under the blanket I had been laying on, and fell fast asleep.
I "hurrrr"ed in annoyance. Really?! I just lay there at the foot of my own bed, trying to make use of the small space I was given and fall asleep as well. It didn't help when the occasional soft kick came my way, reminding me once again of the situation I was stuck in every night. No matter what I did or said in the past, the human never listened. He didn't even seem to understand my words, or the uncomfortable position I had to sleep in every night. Of course, it was also likely that he just didn't care! Likely he had just been ignoring me all this time. What a pufferfish!
Though it took an unbearable ammount of time, eventually, I was thankfully able to fall to sleep. ... My wake wasn't any better. Before I could even wake up fully, I found myself falling a block and a half down onto one of the many large chests inside the house. It wasn't until I landed with a painful
thonk!
that I realized I had just been kicked off my bed by the human himself. I watched as he hopped down from the bed while my mind was still recovering. The human hurried through his chests, not even caring to put back on his shoes and socks. Within a tired blink, I flinched as bread was suddenly shoved into my face. I just looked up curiously to see the human staring blankly down at me, waiting for me to grab the food he was offering.
"That isn't exactly an apology, but I'll take it, I guess.." I groaned, snatching the bread from his hand. Even though I didn't really need it, there was no crossing the human and his mysterious ways. The human turned once the bread was in my grasp, and rushed to put on his shoes and armor. The other villagers finally began to stir when the human slammed the door behind him, once again in a hurry. Hhhh.. With him around, there was no time for nothing. Only work, work, work. Which, I guess I didn't mind, because it meant he was rarely in one place long enough to talk to, also meaning he was never in one place long enough to get in anyone's way. The only real downside to this was that the village was always changing.

After a slow recovery from literally being kicked out of bed, I lazily opened the door of the house to let myself out into the beautiful place. The first thing you always see is green. The village may be small, but it makes up for it by melding beautifully in with it's peaceful gardens, little forest, free roaming animals, the calm river that passes through the barrier, and sweet aroma of honey oozing from the beehive near the very center of everything. I just stopped to take in a refreshing breath of it all. It certainly is a beautiful place to live; and smells WAY better than stinky human feet! That's for sure!.. Unfortunately, before I could finish enjoying the beautiful morning as I walked along the beaten roads, the human just had to demand our attention again.
Boom!
A creeper explosion tore through the two block thick, three block high stone wall, which surrounds the village. Many screams rung through the village like bells, many obviously wondering if that noise was the start of a new raid. Even I wondered that for a split second, worried I would end up just like my parents had in the last one; one I heard the human had only prolonged by going on a mining trip mid-raid. They would have been alright if it had ended sooner. That was one thing I would never forgive him for. That, and him sticking his grimy feet in my face every night.
Everyone within earshot, which really was everyone, ran outside to see what the commotion was about. All eyes eventually fixed themselves on the new hole in the stone wall, which had been bordered on the outside with dark oak by the looks of it. I had never been outside the border before, so that was my first real glimpse of the many endless hills beyond. Well, except for a couple staring sessions outside the gateways the human always used to go in and out of. Sometimes, honestly, I felt like a caged animal with all those walls around me. But, at least we were safe. It's always good to look at the bright side, I guess.
Everyone stared outside the hole in the wall with ghostly pale expressions, afraid to move. Then, their eyes all snapped down at slight movement when an arm lifted from inside the crater to grasp a hold of some firm grass. The human then weakly pulled himself out from the hole. There was a mixture of reactions. Some rejoiced, while others, like me, released a low groan, knowing the human wasn't as much of a hero as everyone else seemed to think he was; just a reckless man who didn't care who, or what his actions affected.
Many rejoicing rushed to congratulate the human on his survival, only to be shooed away once he could stand. To me, it looked like he was much more interested in keeping us all inside the walls, than anything else. The moment the human had his bearings assured, he set out to doing patch-work on the wall, settling to use dirt for the time-being to fill in the hole in both the ground and wall, before leaving to grab more smooth stone and andesite. As interesting as watching the human running around was, I had no time to meander. I was already going to be late for class.
Section 2:
My puny little legs scurried as fast as they could towards the brick schoolhouse. Well, the two bottom foundation blocks were brick, as well as the 't' shape roof. The rest was made of white terracotta: a block everyone seemed to be amazed of even though several of our own houses were made with the same stuff.
I rushed through the door right as the teacher was taking role-call. I was then the first to jump up as my name was called: Tim. I, out of everyone there, was probably the smartest one in class. Even the teacher said I did the best on the crafting test out of all seven of us! The only one to rival me was Quancie, who was probably the smuggled in daughter of a witch, judging by her looks and attitude. She was even good with potions. I swear, if only I could someday prove she painted her face to try to look normal, I would.
"I am sure you have all heard of the commotion that just happened earlier this morning?" The teacher somewhat asked. Everyone, including me, nodded. I added in a little huff, but no one heard. "So, I figured that today would be a great time to learn about Creepers." She stood taller in excitement. A couple in the class groaned, already knowing everything about them from what their parents had told them. I, though, had quite a bit of interest, especially since I had never actually seen a real live creeper before; only small clay models and pictures in books. Our library was small, though, so books were limited. Fooey for me.
The next few hours were spent learning all our kind knew about the fantastic beasts. All the theories as well, such as what they were made of, and how they could explode. As anticipated, we all got to make clay models of our OWN. I took the liberty to make mine black with green spots. I got in trouble for it, but I didn't want to make mine boring. ..I was some how one-upped by Quancie and her green creeper with black stripes instead of speckles. She always had to to that, didn't she?
After that creeper episode, the teacher managed to get in an hour or two of normal stuff, such as trading, and the potential jobs we could have some day. Boring. I know. I for one never really was interested in picking up a trade. I was thinking of being somewhat like Drake, who wore a cool green tunic and was just okay at everything instead of really good at one specific thing. That way, I would never get bored with my job. I would just start working on another one... Nobody liked Drake, though. Everyone told me he was nothing but a bad influence. I didn't think that though. He had a quirky personality, and an uncommon sense of humor. I had nearly blanked out of class, until the teacher brought up something that actually sounded interesting.
"Okay, class. Since it is nearing the end of the school year, I thought it would be a great idea to end it off with a big debate!" She said smiling. Everyone who was in a similar state as me shifted in their spots, in our chairs sitting at desks, all of a sudden.
"You mean the kind the grown ups do?" One of the other students asked.
"Exactly. We will be hosting a debate in front of the entire village (which wasn't much) about whatever topic YOU students think of. It will be a great opportunity to bring you guys into the matters of the village, as well as teach you all how to properly have a debate." The teacher told us all. "The first thing you all have to do now, is decide on a topic, WHICH, I will let you all think of tonight. But make sure you have at least something in mind by tomorrow." And, with that, we were all dismissed. I for one wasn't too interested in the whole thing, but, at least it was more interesting than endless farming tips or crafting recipes.
Section 3:
"Hey, Tim! How was school?!" The first weapon smith in the entire village: Hokeson, ran up to me from his shop, which doubled as his house.. Or was it the other way around? He was always extra friendly towards me, and I never quite knew why. We had hardly anything in common. We even had completely opposite opinions about the human. Him taking kindly to the human's presence; me trying to avoid him as much as possible.
"Oh, it was okay, I guess." I shrugged. Awkward silence followed. It was kind of annoying that the house I stayed in was right along the same road as Hokeson's, since that brought on an almost daily pattern of me and him running into one another, saying our hellos, not having anything else to say, and awkwardly sliding away from one another to go our separate ways. Annoyed with the pattern I was stuck in, I looked for something to talk about. Oh, there looks like something! An old sign I had always seen, but never actually saw. It was nailed into Hokeson's house, right above his front door. Written on it were several odd symbols I didn't recognize. "Hey, what is that above your door?" I asked. Hokeson turned around with somewhat of a prideful smile on his face.
"Oh. That! That's my special sign! The human put that above my door the day I moved out."
"Oh.." I said, somewhat disappointed. How come almost everything about Hokeson has to do with the player?! "Well, what does it mean?"
"I.. Honestly have no idea. But! Since this is the only house he has placed a sign on, solidifying my importance." He said. Wow.. sad. I just kind of shrugged, looking down and kicking some dirt. I didn't know why a sign with scribbles on it would be important, but I guess it is important to him.. for some reason.
"Soo, do you have any way to decode that?" I asked. Hokeson looked at me almost surprised.
"No, actually. I have been looking through the library, but nothing there contains a translator of any kind. I however have found books in that same library written in those same symbols, which must be the books he had brought with him to the village so long ago. My hope is that if I can find an identical book to one we already have in the library, then I can read through both and make my own chart... Does that sound like a smart idea?. I have heard you are a top student in school." Hokeson ended with a one-eyed wink I didn't understand.
"Um. Sure.. Sounds like a good idea, I guess." I spoke unenthusiastically.
"I hoped so! Figuring out the secret to the human's language will be a massive step! I for one am super excited! Just imagine how much closer we can get to learning about the human, and him learning about us?! If we can communicate, I can imagine our village will be put on the map for such a massive discovery!" Hokeson exclaimed, finally in his field of enjoyed topics. "Would you like to help me out? I would love some help!" He asked.
"Eh... Sorry, I'm.. a bit.. tired." I faked a yawn, dragging my feet away towards the house I stayed in.
"Oh, well. Get some rest! I know how hard that is!" He chuckled, waving at my back; but I didn't really pay much attention. I was too busy thinking about what I had just learned.
Understanding the human?! Was that even possible? I just thought the human just ran around randomly, doing nothing but mindless work for the benefit of itself, and itself only. The idea that it had it's very own mind. A mind complicated enough to host a language of it's own. Well, that idea was just absurd! What really bothered me though: the idea that it was possible to learn this. Why?. Well.. I didn't exactly want to know what was going on inside his head. I more preferred the silent, stiff faced human I was used to. Knowing it's thoughts, it's feelings, it's fears, desires, wishes.. that didn't sound like him. That didn't sound like the human at all. That sounded like a villager. A villager I could care about!.. I just.. I couldn't bring myself to care.
And. It was right then, that I got my brilliant idea. A debate topic. The perfect, debate topic. It really was perfect. It, hopefully, would change everything too.. for the better.
"The human is only ruining our village. He needs to go."
