Chapter 5
It was 5:30 in the evening, just two more days were left for the students week to start. Divya's mornings would start with numerous meetings with the faculties, then with the HODs and then with the CRs. When that would be done she would have to take updates from the PR who were still clueless even after giving so many instructions to them. She couldn't understand what new method was to be used to make them see things. She really hoped that for once the professors headed to what they had to say and let them handle the online PR especially when she was the one working day and night on it.
When finally Divya went back upstairs in the boys common room. The sight over there was horrendous, huge numbers of people had crowded the place, there were fights going on and the president of the Degree section seemed anything but lost. Divya looked beside her where stood her president Aisha, the two shook their heads at all the mess that was going on over there.
"I really don't understand how we are going to get it done...especially with these idiot lots." Divya said out loud. For the first time she felt dejected and helpless and clueless at the same time.
"Same here. Divya, please talk with the other people. I will see what's going on in the cabin." Divya nodded her head as Aisha walked into the cabin and she kept her bag at a side. She really needed to get rid of that. Divya had just turned around when she felt a tap on her back, turning around she came face to face with a very disturbed Simran.
"Are you okay?" Simran asked, as she studied Divya's exhausted face.
Divya so wanted to heave out a huge breath and scream out how things really weren't right. Half of the budget was yet not sanctioned, the celebrities who were to be approached by some guy had all of a sudden backed out, now she had to handle even that, the president though had her fair amount of work which included taking feedbacks from here...she wished would have taken some amount of work from her and given a bit of attention at least to the Technicals. She remembered when she had last asked her to do that, she had said she couldn't really do that because she didn't understand the designs.
But then there was that time when they had to work on their hoodies and she had convincingly taken up that project, not that Divya minded anything...just that if only Aisha would have looked up on certain other factors as well. Divya was surely frustrated, however she couldn't really tell this stuff to simran at least not now.
But she was glad that Simran, Nandini and Rishi were there on the team, over the days when things wouldn't be working simran had wonderfully outdone herself into handling things single handedly, Nandini herself had found her way into doing things on time, there wouldn't be any excuses, no complaints from anyone for this department...Divya was happy just like that of last year even this year's documentation department was sorted. She had even heard Ms Maheshwari complimenting and saying "Ohh that chotu Nandini will handle things very well you give all the documents to her, she had been quite particular with her work."
And then there was even Rishi, where Divya had thought that he would be one huge problem, he had come out to be as a solution, be it handling things at the very last moment. She remembered how a few days ago Aisha had said that she didn't believe in Rishi, Divya had been quite pissed with it for it wasn't Rishi who had gone and asked for responsibilities, it was Aisha who had asked him. The very next moment Divya had called up Rishi and asked him to back off, she would accept everything but she wouldn't accept if her teammates were to be doubted by anyone, she knew well who worked how, and when need be she would let them in just the way she had asked Rishi to look into the banners and the posters. And just as Divya had known he had outdone himself making her proud of him even more.
She knew Rishi was mischievous, but at the same time he was the most reliable person when it came to works like this. And there was no requirement of giving justification of that to anyone... she had always believed in showing people how things worked, rather than talking about it...and her friends had as well done the same.
"Nahh I am not at all good, but right now we have to take care of this ruckuss...what are they doing here and from when ?' Divya asked, her eyes moving around.
"They came an hour ago and said they had permission for the same."
"Damn is that registrar retarded or what, he need to keep a ledger with which place is allotted to whom, let me see who is leading it and I will have a word with them...fuck already three committees are working here, I cant have the college fest people here for their ramp walk, they might cause an issue and then I will have to pay the price." Divya weaved her fingers from her hair as she looked around for Priya.
"Where is priya, did she eat anything?' she asked.
"No she is working inside, it's really stuffy in there, we want to work here but..." Simarn indicated at the completely stuffed up place she couldn't imagine the way her teammates are working. This was not how she had imagined and thought things to go. Divya felt the frustration building up within her, she worried, if she didn't control things soon she might as well cry.
"I will talk with Aman and see what things are going on, I am really sorry, please for sometime you guys work there, rather how about you take a break, ask everyone to do that,we can work till 7 but right now you take a break."
"What about you?'
"I ... I need to take care of this first. I am really tired Simran, really really frustrated and tired and angry... people really don't understand that the other person is as well a human and has just a limited amount of tolerance. Any which ways you go I will make a few calls and come back." Simran wrapped her arms around Divya as she relaxed within that hug.
Divya couldn't be any more happy. One might never understand, but that hug from your best friend which is followed by an hour long session of curses when your mood is just not right... isn't just a phase of life, rather an unspoken promise that all will be right, and divya knew deep down at that moment when Simran let go off her, smiled at her and said, "You know what you go and make those calls, then we all will go and have that late lunch." When she had such friends obviously things would be difficult for a while...but not for long. With a bright nod Divya fetched her phone and was about to call when she realized her services were cut off. She called simran and said, "Dude my services have been cut off please call Aman."
Simran called Aman and handed the phone to Divya, she talked about it with Aman who then assured her that things will be taken care off, and then with next 10 min the team moved out on the terrace, Divya had just let out a sigh when she found one of the HODs from the college fest standing right infront of her.
"Hey Divya, really sorry if you guys had any problem. I just got a call from Aman."
"Ohh noo, you know right how the weather is, it will be really great if your teammates stick to that area, I didn't know you were in charge here else I would have talked to you directly, but then it was urgent hence I directly had a word with Aman."
"No issues, by the way, you are doing it very well, just relax." Divya gave him her signature bright smile as she then called Simran and asked her to call Nandini and the others as she made her way downstairs, this time through the lift...she didn't have it in her to go and socialize with anyone. While the lift went down, she rested her head at the cool wall, letting it calm her down. She was so tired and exhausted. Since morning she had been on toes and hadn't even had a single drop of water. If her mother or her sister were to know about this they would surely kill her.
As she made her way out,she met Nandini, who stood with a few of their juniors and then there was Simran and Rohan sitting quite close to each other at the stall. Divya raised her eyebrows as she noticed the two and then looked at Nandini who smiled at her sheepishly. It was then she realized how badly they needed to sit together and talk, like the real talks which they had over Nandini's place where they filled each other on the happenings of their life.
------------------------------------------
The next day being a Saturday not many students were there in college. Though for Divya and Nandini all the days had mostly been the same. They had been here in college even on Sundays when many preferred to stay at home wrapped up in their blankets, but then they would be here at college for some or the other meetings, if not that then to complete the remaining work and if not even that then for their respective events.
As Divya walked through the lanes of the college her phone began ringing, accepting the call she greeted Nandini in a cheerful voice, surprisingly she was in a good mood.
"Where are you?" Nandini asked, coming right to the point.
"Ohh I am near the Frankie point ....you?'
"I am near the Raju sandwich, you come I will wait for you." hanging up the call, Divya fastened her steps as she turned round the corner she saw Nandini standing by the stall waiting for her while scrolling through her phone.
"Broo." Divya called out to Nandini who looked up from her phone and let out a huge sigh.
"So what do we have to do today?"
"I don't know about today but I know for sure, as soon as this whole thing gets over we need to go to your place and chill. I am so done with this." The two began walking towards the staffroom to meet the convener.
Somewhat about 4 hours later Divya quickly swung open the door, and walked into the staffroom of the degree section, the cool air engulfed her and almost made her moan in delight. Even though it was December nowhere had the weather been pleasurable. She still wore her cotton clothes and as loose as possible to get rid of the heat.
As she walked closer to the computers, she checked her watch – her stomach grumbled once again and it was already 3. She had to remind herself that one more hour she will have to endure and then she could surely take a break.
"Nandini, how many letters are done." She enquired, as she took a seat on the chair, her work aura was surely calm and composed all the time, but at that moment she was in a hurry. About 20 letters were to be drafted, verified, confirmed and were to be signed by the professors before they left.
"Dude, Divya, I am fed up with them... I told them how these things are to be done, yet they won't understand, I mean how the hell one could be so stupid." Nandini complained as her members shook their heads all the while suppressing a smile of their own.
Nandini surely looked cute when she was frustrated, but at that time so was she.
"Guys I had given you time till 3:30pm, you have half an hour to go, but first tell me how many letters are done." Divya asked once again.
As she waited for the answer, for a while none spoke, she looked at each one of them as one of the members said, "We were almost done, but then we realized that we hadn't saved the letter and then Amli ma'am came and changed the format and then again Ms. Maheshwari changed the format and we are finally on the one which you gave."
Divya looked at Nandini who shrugged her shoulders, as she slogged back into the chair.
"You know Nandu, since morning I have been going around in circles meeting after meeting, first meeting with the HODs, then a special meeting with the CRs, then a meeting with both the ma'a, and then again a meeting with both the president, again I have to look after the rules, the PR...dude cant the degree people for once know how work is to be done and – "
"Just a second Madhav is calling." Nandini stopped her as she picked up the call and informed him about her ware abouts.
"Dude Madhav is more important to you than me?' Divya exclaimed.
"Are Babudi... he has been calling me for a while, and chill everything will be done. By the way I got 2 coupons today."
"Ohh shit, even I took your coupon" the two laughed as they realized they had 4 coupons in all . That actually counted up to 200 Rs worth of free food.
As Divya turned around and looked at the letter, she heard Nandini greeting Madhav, facing the two she smiled at him, as the latter waved.
"What's going on...By the way Divya, did you have a word with Aman?' Madhav asked.
"Madhav no, please don't get me started on that... my event is supposed to start from the day after and you guys are so enjoying irritating me. I was on a call with that stupid celebrity man." Divya ranted as she remembered the moment when she was on a call with this one celebrity who worked in TV dramas, she almost had him in, when she kept on getting a call from Aman on her phone. Seeming it to be an important call she had handed over the celebrities call to one of the PR HODs and had attended Aman's call. However it turned out to be yet another prank of theirs where they were enquiring if they all could be a part of the team... part of the team at a moment when one of the most important competitions were round the corner, when they knew they could get the best of gossip around.
It had taken her a while, she had even considered it to be true until their most notorious friend, who was as well the president of the college fest had actually talked to her, taking her name, which quite surprised her that he even knew about and had asked if he could as well be a part of the team. She had straight away refused and hung up the call on them.
"Ohh so you guys are calling one?" Madhav enquired. Divya could very well see his instincts of getting a fresh brewed gossip waking up at her words.
"Nothing that should interest you." she then turned towards the members and chided them. "Dude just copy that damn thing and change the name, how long will you guys take to just do this one simple thing."
"Divya." Both Madhav and Nandini called out to her, as the members huffed and began working as instructed.
"What, dude it's been a whole day they are at it, I know ma'am fucked this up here, but still please try and do smart work." Divya rubbed her forehead, completely pissed out and hungry at the same time. She felt bad for the way she was behaving, but it seemed certain things were wrong...and especially with Madhav there. She felt conscious, nervous and quite hyperventilated and she couldn't point out why it was that way.
"Divya, chill, do you want me to do that, see yelling at them won't work.. you know that." Madhav said as she felt him rubbing her shoulders as if to calm her down. The small innocent act made her stiff in her place. She so wanted to get out of here, her feelings were quite everywhere at this moment and she didn't want to say something to anyone that she would later regret.
"Yeahh I know, and no it's okay they will do-" Divya was about to continue when she saw one of the members yet again making the same mistake. " aree yaar, what the hell are you doing..."
"Divya, wait, I will type it, you relax." Madhav said, and for a while Madhav, Nandini and the members kept on fighting while Divya sat there with her head in her hands. She couldn't believe what the hell was really happening there. Instead of getting the work done her members were fighting on who will type the letter.
Can the day get any worse? She thought.
Soon the dispute was solved and Madhav typed the letters, it took him 15 minutes to be exact and the work was finally done. But at that time Divya couldn't have been as thankful to him as she really was.
"Dude seriously Thanks a lot."
"Ohh it's okay, just don't stress and maybe you could give me a coupon or two." Both Divya and Nandini narrowed their eyes at him and said,
'You will have to wait for 15 minutes , we are about to go on a break at 4." Madhav nodded his head and had decided to wait with them but soon got a call. He stood up and gave Nandini a tight hug, and soon turned to Divya and did the same even before she could stop him.
It was quite common, but what scared her was that there were a number of professors who stood there in the staffroom all eyeing them. She only hoped this wouldn't be a scene.
Soon Nandini and Divya made their way downstairs as Nandini made a few calls and called Simran and the rest of the group.
It seemed as if Divya was glad she decided to get in a few more people in the team, a few were from SY BTM, all were Nandini's and Simran's great friend. Divya never really got a chance to hang out with them, but she knew how wonderfully they were working.
As they went and took their seats at the sandwich shop, Nandini and she waited for the others to come, Divya was still counting the things that were to be done when she saw Edwin, Kabeer, Simran walking towards them with Rohan in tow.
"Where have you been, we are really hungry, now give the orders quickly." Nandini said.
"ohh ohh... I will have a chocolate sandwich." Edwin said, his one hand raising up as he bounced a bit in his chair. Edwin, Divya had found to be the cutest of all, kiddish, easy going and best of all a person who hated people who smoked.
"I will have a margarita pizza," Divya said, as she kept the menu card on the table.
Soon each of them gave their orders, and Madhav and Dev as well joined them. The group devoured the late lunch, and as Madhav walked off after eating his portion of Pizza, the conversation moved on to the stupid antics. The chocolate sandwich however was eaten by all but not by Edwin.
"You should be a bit faster next time to make it there." Kabeer teased, as the group walked upstairs. The work was yet to be done. And Divya and Nandini couldn't wait for the day to get over already.
But as she made her way back home that evening, she plugged in her ear phone as her favourite playlist began to play, the happenings of the whole day started to repeat in her mind, she couldn't help but smile at the way Madhav tackled her situation today. Not many knew how was it to handle her irritation and make her calm down, many times it was up to her only to get herself sorted, she couldn't believe how all of a sudden they had become so close for him to come and help them, maybe it was Nandini whom he was helping but then again, they weren't really that of good friends to even bade byes with a hug.
Divya laughed at her silly thoughts, maybe she was reading just between the lines, it wasn't that big of a deal to bid byes with a hug. it made her remember the first time they had met during their Trip to Delhi, but then again was it really the first time... she couldn't really say so for they never knew when was it that they actually became friends.
