Chapter 8

Sylvie had been laying on the bed. Her pillow was soaked with angry and sorrowful tears she had cried earlier. Now, she was debating whether to apologize to the boys for her harshness or not. Looking out the window, she saw it was night, and what was different about this night sky was the stars were drowned out from the city lights and two oddly shaped moons rested there. Her stomach growled loudly; Sylvie realized she had not eaten anything since Adelar had given her a slice of bread and water. Sucking in air and pride, she opened the door and found Ajax, sitting on the couch, staring at a holographic screen.

Before she could say anything, Ajax told her, "Just so you know, we're going to be leaving the moon in two days, and I need you to sleep in here."

Shocked by his calmness, she walked to the kitchen and asked where the refrigerator was. Following his finger, she brought out a small container of the soup Haloami had made and placed it in a small pot to warm on the stove. The quiet that rested in the house made Sylvie shift uncomfortably. She sat down on the couch with a steaming bowl of the strange soup and began devouring it. It tasted like a sweet oatmeal and it satisfied her starving belly. Silence, all there was was silence.

    It was rather boring.

Sylvie was drifting off to sleep when the shattering of glass outside the front door was heard. Ajax instantly drew his gun and gestured for Sylvie to follow him. Wide-eyed, she grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen and tip-toed behind him to the front door. Ajax put his ear to the door, placed the gun barrel against it, and fired. Opening the door, a fresh alien corpse lay on the front steps. Sylvie suppressed a scream.

Bullets started rapid firing in their direction and Ajax pushed Sylvie back into the house and slammed the front door shut as holes kept forming in the door. She found herself facing one of the members of the bounty hunter's gang that were at the Hummer Station. Without thinking, she swung the frying pan at his head with all her might. He fell, unconscious onto the floor. Ajax ran to her after barricading the door, which was now sprinkled with holes.

He suddenly froze and pointed behind her, mouthing don't move.

"Put your hands up!" a voice behind her demanded and there was a click of a loaded gun.

Ajax gestured to his gun ready and locked at its target. Sylvie's eyes met his and she nodded. She jumped to the side and Ajax shot the alien before the four armed creature could react. As Sylvie crawled under the couch, she heard a machine gun firing down the hallway.

Lasers and bullets skipped across the floor in front of her, making small 'pings' and 'pongs.' Sylvie's heart leapt to her throat as one hit inches from where she was lying. She stayed there, panicking, not knowing what to do when a small gun slid to where her hands were, idle. Her eyes hovered over it for a few seconds before she dared to touch it. It was loaded and lightweight.

Ajax grunted in pain, damn, forgot he is still out there. She peeked out from underneath the couch but quickly ducked back, seeing the leader of the group holding a rapid firing gun. Taking the small pistol, she aimed as he was about to fire in Ajax's direction and pulled the trigger. The gun kicked back and butted Sylvie in the nose, but the bullet she fired grazed into the alien's head. He crumpled to the floor, dead.

Frowning and holding her bleeding nose, she slid out from underneath the couch, which had been pelleted by lasers and bullets and crawled to Ajax.

"What the bloody hell was that?" she asked, her voice quivering.

"It was those guys from the drinking bar; must've wanted to finish what they started." Ajax grimaced when he tried to shrug, "Can you help me out here?"

Sylvie pulled back his shirt and gasped at the sight, "It's a bloody mess!"

"You got that right," Ajax grimaced. "Get the blanket and apply pressure to the wound so it doesn't get worse."

Sylvie followed his directions and was soon holding a blanket full of blood, which leaked onto her hands, making her feel queasy. Ajax didn't flinch but she could tell he was keeping his jaw clenched tightly. Doing this reminded her of the time her younger brother, James, had crashed on his bicycle and she had to clean his scraped knees, except this was ten times more crimson and not at all an accident.

This thought made her mind wander back to her house, where there was air conditioning, heat and good food. Her family, friends, Tracy, and her little time with Andrew. She missed Earth terribly: its blue skies, green grass, oceans and humans.

"What are you smiling about?" Ajax asked, his voice breaking through her daydreaming.

Sylvie's smile faded quickly, but, I might never see them again. "Just thinking," she answered, tears forming in her eyes.

    "What were you thinking about?"

A salty tear ran down her cheek. "My mum, dad, and brother," she sniffled.

Ajax seemed lost in what to do and didn't say anything. Sylvie wiped her eyes then went to find the first aid kit. Surely they would have something around here, she wondered as she searched the cupboards. She took a step but tripped on a strange metal sphere with pretty buttons, flashing red. Out of curiosity, she picked it up and then saw numbers starting at ten, counting down to zero. An alarm buzzed in her mind, Bomb! Bomb! Bomb! She threw it down and as soon as it hit the floor, it burst into a giant cloud of serpent green gas.

"Sylv!" Ajax called through the thick green fog but Sylvie couldn't see him anywhere. The gas caused her to cough and choke and it stung her eyes. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head, everything went black.

Sylvie's consciousness came back to a cold, wet feeling on her face. Her eyes fluttered open. She was in her room. Sitting up, she removed the wet rag from her forehead and looked around. Cleaning droids were hustling about everywhere! The encounter last night came back in a memory flash.

"I see you're up," Ajax's voice came from the doorway.

Sylvie didn't know how he managed to escape the sleeping gas but apparently he did. His arm was bandaged, his eyes had dark circles around them, and a nasty cut ran down his lip. His posture was slumped and it was easy to tell he hadn't slept a wink.

"Forget about me, you look terrible," Sylvie told him.

"I'll be fine," he said, but the tiredness that strained his voice was unconvincing.

"I'm sorry but you need to sleep. This is no time for tough guy act," Sylvie told him, pushing him to his room which was next door.

    "I told you I'm-"

"Shut up and go to sleep," Sylvie shoved him onto his bed.

Ajax gave up and closed his eyes. Before she exited the room, Sylvie heard snoring coming from the bed.
