Chapter 5
After regaining her footing from the landing, Sylvie stood in front of a fairly large house with a cute little garden decorating the lawn. She didn't recognize a single one of the plants, yet again, she was on a totally different planet so why would she? When standing on the porch, she had a creepy feeling something was watching her and looked over her shoulder, only to see a bush with oddly shaped orange and pink buds. Adelar knocked on the door and to Sylvie's surprise, a human boy with dark blond hair and deep brown eyes, probably no older than seventeen, answered the door.
"Ajax, this is a refugee, she will be staying with us," Adelar told him.
They were staring at each other, but neither were embarrassed that they were. This is the first human Sylvie had seen in more than three months, and probably the first time he had seen another human in general. Ajax stepped aside to let them in.
What an interesting house it was, in an alien sort of way. The furniture looked similar to the furniture on Earth, but the couches were built into the wall and the table and chairs were tall. Other than that and a few other quirks, the house seemed like any ordinary home. A female falcon humanoid came out of the kitchen and hugged Adelar.
"How was the market dear?"
"We made a good profit this month Haloami, and also found a human girl," Adelar gestured toward Sylvie.
"Oh you poor thing," Haloami gasped, taking both of Sylvie's hands into her feathers, "I will make you brand new, come with me."
Sylvie never felt more relaxed in her life. Haloami had rubbed all of the calluses off her hands and made them smooth and dainty again, trimmed her nails, massaged her bunched up muscles, bathed her in a real hot bath in a tub any girl could dream for and brushed her hair until it shone. She was given silk night clothes, much more comfortable than the old rags she had on. There was a spare bedroom containing a real bed with a mattress and clean sheets. Sylvie drifted into a deep sleep as soon as she hit the covers.
An interesting, but sweet smell coming from downstairs woke Sylvie. A fresh pair of clothes sat on the end of the bed. Murmuring a thank you to Haloami, she changed into straight, grey pants, an olive green tank top and pulled on medium brown space boots over her grey pants. After braiding her hair down her shoulder, she glided down the stairs to see Ajax, sitting at the table. Quietly, she climbed up the tall chair and sat next to him. She just noticed his left ear was pierced and a silver earing took it's place. Haloami walked out of the kitchen carrying two bowls of soup.
"The sleeping queen is finally up," she said.
"It's been some time since I've slept in a real bed," Sylvie giggled.
"It must have been, you were asleep for an entire day,"
Sylvie choked on her water, I was asleep for twenty-four hours?
"With the twelve hours of sleep, I'm sure she is ready to tag along with you Ajax."
"I'll keep an eye on her, but she better not get in my way," Ajax mixed some spices from the middle of the table into his soup.
"By the way, what's your name dear?" Haloami sat opposite to the humans.
"Sylvie Mullan," she said, dipping her spoon into the sweet smelling soup, "so, a full day on this moon is twelve hours?"
"Adelar was right," Ajax shared a glance with Haloami, "she is an earthling."
Sylvie's eyes darted from Ajax to Haloami, "I'm sorry I have so many questions, but as you both probably know, I don't know anything about this world. Why are humans so rare around these parts and how did you happen to come across one?" Sylvie gestured to Ajax, "no offense," she added in quickly.
"None taken. Silver-"
"Sylvie,"
"Whatever," Ajax then continued to answer her question, "Humans used to be the dominant species and ruled all of the different alien species; but they ruled with cruelty and high prejudice against aliens. The aliens decided to revolt, causing a massive slaughter of men, women, and children humans alike. There were camps made for such killings and they were called Camps of Justice, and even most aliens didn't dare to go there because of the bloodshed. Humans' population declined rapidly and before you knew it, they were going extinct and still are today. That's why you're the first human I've ever seen in my life, besides my genetic parents, who hid me from the aliens as a baby."
"We came upon Ajax, who was well hidden in a basket in an ally in the streets," Haloami told her, answering the second question.
"If the aliens hated humans, why didn't they go to Earth and just kill us?"
"Good question," Haloami said, "the Milky Way is a galaxy no aliens visit because Earth is the only planet known for holding intelligent life and we dare not go there for humans are endemic to that planet. Those alien slavers that captured you were brave to go there."
Sylvie nodded slowly, "And, since aliens hate us, we always need to watch our backs?"
"Never let your guard down, especially on this planet where bounty hunters and gangsters are lurking everywhere,"Ajax looked dead serious when he spoke. Sylvie didn't realize she was nervously mixing her spoon around in her soup, which was now cold.
"Now now Ajax, quit scaring the girl. Adelar and I will be leaving to the prairie moon, just call us if you need anything, there are leftovers in the cool box and again, watch Sylvie."
Ajax's eyes twinkled with playfulness before he climbed down the seat. Sylvie followed him and nearly dropped the holster Ajax tossed at her. He began strapping one of his own to his belt; Sylvie tried, but couldn't figure out which strap goes where. After he had finished strapping his gun on his hip, he helped Sylvie adjust the straps. He handed her a blaster and she flinched at the sight of it.
"I don't even know how to shoot one of these things," Sylvie stated, cautiously taking it from him and tucking it in the holster.
"All you do is pull the trigger," he told her. "I can teach you how to aim better when we get back."
"Where are we going?" she asked.
Ajax twirled his gun then stuck it in his holster, "We're going to have some fun."
The mischievous glint Sylvie caught in his eyes made her feel uneasy, but staying here alone was not a good option either since she did not know how to defend herself. Reluctantly, she followed him out the door.
