Chapter 13
"Here's your uniform," Ajax handed Sylvie a tight jumpsuit with electric blue lines outlining the waistline, arms, and legs.
"Why would I need this?" Sylvie asked flatley, taking the jumpsuit.
"Your clothes looked pretty worn out, and you need to wear this to get into the pits anyway."
Sylvie turned on the shower, shutting the bathroom door behind her. She stood under the running hot water, letting all her stress and worries be washed down the drain. It's just a race, there's no way anything can happen to me. I'll be with Jinx, I'm sure there's a very small chance of being kidnapped inside a restricted area.
Stepping out, she squeezed out the water her long, thick hair had absorbed and inhaled the steamy air. She zipped the suit up to her neck and pulled on a pair of black space boots over it. Smelling of hotel soap and feeling relaxed, she exited the bathroom, seeing Jinx and Ajax were ready to leave.
Ajax hopped onto his motorbike and gestured for us to get on behind. Jinx helped her up and sat behind her. What looked to be a one-seater hoverbike, was surprisingly roomy. Revving the engines, Ajax sent the bike speeding in the direction of the race. The sudden motion startled Sylvie and she kept her arms locked around Ajax, fearing if she let go she would fall. She felt Jinx gingerly place his hands at her sides; she smirked at his politeness.
"How high can this thing go?!" she shouted over the wind as they steadily flew higher and higher.
"A little over a thousand feet!" Ajax yelled back.
A thousand feet? Sylvie's stomach weakened at the thought of being so high up.
The trip was surprisingly short as they entered a massive stadium, where million of rows of bleachers were stacked around and in the center stood a race track, full of obstacles. Some seats were already filled for the big race tonight.
Ajax parked in a pit deck and they all slid off.
"I need to make sure I'm still signed in," Ajax told them as he started off toward a booth.
"Why would you not be signed in?" Sylvie asked, following him.
He leaned in close and whispered, "Because my name tends to disappear on the sign up sheet."
"Why?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm a human."
He left Sylvie standing there, confused. She turned to head back to where Jinx stood in the pits, having an eerie feeling she was being stalked. Staying alert her fingers inching toward her blaster, she entered the pit and found Jinx was not there. I wonder where he went. She stooped over to pick up a misplaced wrench. Out of boredom, Sylvie mounted the parked hoverbike and pretended she was racing, just to keep herself entertained.
Sylvie heard someone enter and thinking it was Ajax or Jinx, quickly dismounted the bike, thinking up some stupid excuse for being on it. It was not any of the boys. It was a tall, alien man with tattoos covering his scaly skin. He looked just like a stereotypical biker gangster, though he was the same species as the scaled man she had met on the cargo ship.
"Is this Steelclaw's pit?" he asked gruffly, looking down at her.
Sylvie's fingers clasped around her blaster, "Yes."
"Well tell him him Ty says that he won't escape this race alive," with that, the alien man stormed off.
Sylvie released the breath she had been holding and her muscles relaxed. Not too long after Ty left, Ajax and Jinx arrived.
"I told you she headed back to the pit," Ajax punched Jinx playfully. "Why didn't you believe me."
"Ow, I needed to confirm it," Jinx rubbed his arm.
"It's good to know you two had not forgotten about me," Sylvie grinned.
"I've gotta go for a test run before the race, then we can go get lunch, agreed?" Ajax asked, looking from the alien to the human.
"Agreed," Jinx nodded.
"Agreed, but Ajax, I need to tell you something," Sylvie told him, her face dead serious.
"What's up?" he looked down at her. Sylvie had never realized how short she was compared to him until he was standing directly in front of her.
"Ty stopped by, he threatened that you wouldn't escape the race alive."
Ajax waved the warning off, "Ah, he says that every race and I'm still here."
"Still," Sylvie stepped in between him and the hoverbike, "I would keep that in mind if I were you."
Ajax smirked and patted her head, "You worry too much Sylv." With that, he mounted his bike and zoomed off.
