"I'm sorry," Robert said gently.
"I hope I didn't scare you."
Sandy forced a smile.
"Maybe just a little."
There were a few minutes of silence as the limousine pulled out of the underground parking and onto the main street.
It was Sandy that broke the uneasy silence.
"How do you know my mom and aunt?"
Robert took a deep breath.
"I could tell you, Sandy, but I don't think you would believe me. I am not sure if I believe this myself."
"Did you meet mom somewhere?"
Robert searched for the right words, but they did not come.
"Let's just leave things as they are, for now. If things work out, then maybe your mom and I will try to explain things later."
Sandy simply nodded and another silence overtook the two.
This time it was Robert that spoke first.
"Aw, how is your father?"
Robert was unsure of how he would react to the answer.
"I never knew my father. Mom never to married.
She got pregnant when she was eighteen and honestly, she has never talked about my father.
All she has ever told me was that he was a guy she met and fell in love with. She was sure that he loved her as well, but one day he simply disappeared.
She has never seen or heard from him since. And that is almost 20 years."
"She never mentioned his name?"
Sandy shook her head.
"No. She wouldn't even tell grandma and grandpa who he was."
She turned to Robert.
"I am pretty sure my Auntie She knows who he is, but she made a promise to mom to never tell anyone and she has kept that promise.
I just wish I knew what the big secret was all about."
Robert smiled and nodded his head.
"Maybe it was for the best. You seem to have had a good life."
Sandy smiled.
"I have had a great life. I have an amazing mother who has done everything that she could to see that I got what I needed in life. And my Aunt She and Uncle Ray have been amazing."
"That's great," Robert whispered, as he looked away.
As silence overtook the two once again, Sandy stared at the man sitting next to her.
He suddenly did not seem like a world renown musician. he did not seem like the rock god that she had so often pictured him as.
She was no longer nervous around him. She did not feel any urge to swoon at him or kiss him or give herself to him. To kneel at his feet or jump in his bed.
On stage, he might of been a rock star, but here, sitting next to her, he was just a man.
A man who seemed to know something about her mother. Perhaps even more than Sandy did herself.
He was a man hiding something. Of that, she was sure.
"How do you know my mom?"
"Its like I said before, Sandy, I can't say anything right now."
"Why? What are you hiding?
Do you know something about my father.? Do you know who he is?"
Robert simply stared at the young woman. He could not tell her what he believed. he was still unsure that he even believed it himself.
"Maybe everything will be a little clearer, when I see your mother."
Sandy shook her head.
"Here I am with Robert Bowman. The leader of the greatest rock band in the world."
She took a deep breath.
"I think it is settling in now."
"There may be more here than meets the eye," Robert added, nonchalantly.
The limousine pulled off the main road and into a residential area. Robert saw the headlights flash across the street sign; 'Holland Drive'.
Robert suddenly felt the uneasiness returning, with a vengeance. All sorts of thoughts were clouding up his mind.
What if it was not the same Vickie?
What if this was just some sort of unbelievable coincidence and the whole thing had really been nothing more than a coma induced dream?
Robert swallowed hard.
He had to handle this situation very carefully or it could turn to to be one of the most embarrassing moments in his life.
Or it could be a dream fulfilled.
The limousine pulled over to the side of the street. The driver's voice came over the intercom.
"We are here, sir. 127 Holland Drive."
Robert opened his door quickly and got ou. As he slowly closed the limousine's door, he surveyed the area.
It was a typical residential area, like many, he was sure, in any big city.
Both sides of the street were lined with neat houses, with manicured lans, paved driveways and most had a tree of some sort growing in the front.
The sound of a car door closing brought Robert out of his trance.
Sandy was standing next to him.
"You look nervous."
Robert forced a smile.
"I guess I am."
Sandy took his hand.
"So, are we going in?"
Robert noticed the warmth of Sandy's hand. It reminded him of Vickie's.
He nodded and the two walked around the front of the limousine.
"Mom is still a beautiful woman," Sandy mentioned, as they walked.
"Most people mistake us for sisters, rather than mother and daughter."
Robert smiled at Vickie's memory. She certainly had been a beautiful woman.
As they neared the front door, Robert hesitated.
"What's wrong?"
"Are you sure your mom won't mind you bringing me here?"
Sandy smiled.
"My mom is cool. She let's me do pretty much what I want. I usually have my friends here. They all love Mom and she feels so much better knowing where I am."
"She must really love you."
"She does. She would never let anyone or anything hurt me."
Robert let go of Sandy's hand.
"Then I had better go."
"What? Why?"
"I can't tell you."
He started walking away from the house.
"I have to go."
Sandy watched for a second, but decided to take control of the situation. She opened the door to the house and ran inside.
"Mom? Mom?" she yelled.
"I have someone here who wants to meet you."
