Chapter 22

Lilith's POV

I can't tell where I am, hut I'm sure I'm laying face down on the ground. The cold grass brushes against my skin and shivers run down my spine. My brain tells me not to move a muscle, not to say a word.

When a hand caresses my cheek, I don't flinch. I don't move, I don't speak.

"It'll be fine, little flower."

"You'll be okay soon, Lilith."

"Everything will be okay."

In my experience, every time someone says taut it'll be fine, things always go wrong somehow. No matter what they try, something bad always happens. And I have a feeling this time won't be different.

"Are they dead?" A whisper comes from the other side. The hand stops and the person next to me stands.

There is complete silence surrounding us. I can sense someone else next to me when a hand comes closer to mine and fingers are interlaced with mine. Harry.

"You." Voldemort says. "Examine them. Tell me if they're dead."

Harry grips my hand tighter before releasing it. I don't move a muscle, suddenly aware of everything happening around me: the leaves falling and being crushed beneath the person's feet; the little giggles Voldemort releases once in a while.

The same hand, softer than before if that's possible, touches my face and pulls back one of my eyelids. I can hear the woman's fast breathing as she feels my beating heart. She does the same to Harry. I know she can feel the steady pounding of our hearts.

"Is Draco alive? Is he in the castle?" Her whisper is barely audible, her lips a inch from our ears. Her hair falls down, shielding our face from the other Death Eaters.

"Yes." Harry breathes back. I don't dare open my eyes.

Intense happiness fills me. Draco's okay, he's alive and in the castle. But with the war going on, no one is safe here. Draco's mother, Narcissa, caresses my cheek.

"He loves you so much, dear." She whispers to me and I smile involuntarily. "And I know you love him too."

Her hand leaves my face after patting it lovingly.

"They are dead!" Narcissa Malfoy calls to the watchers.

They all shout in triumph and jump around. Wow, glad to know everyone likes us... So happy that we're dead. Man, they'll have the surprise of the century!

I so want to see their faces when we show then we're not really dead. Oh, I'm so exited! Okay, calm down, don't move. Don't show them you're alive.

Through my eyelids,I see bursts of red and silver light being shot into the air in celebration. Still pretending to be dead, I realize Narcissa wants to see her son and wanted to know if he's okay. So she asked us. She no longer cares if Voldemort wins or not.

"You see?" Voldemort shouts happily. "Harry and Lilith Potter are dead by my hand, and no man alive can threaten me now! Watch! Crucio!"

I was not expecting that. I know Voldemort believes we're dead but I never thought he would torture us even after death. I am lifted in the air, the pain hitting me like a train. My determination to remain limp is what stops me from whimpering. I am thrown once, twice, three, four times into the air, my glasses falling on the ground. Fortunately, my wand is secure inside my pants. When I fall to the ground for the last time, Voldemort does the same to Harry.

"Now, we go to the castle, and show them what has become of their hero. Who shall drag the body? No, wait!"

There is a fresh outbreak of laughter, and after a few moments I feel the ground leave from under me, a pair of arms lifting me from the floor.

"You carry him. And you carry her, Lucius. Voldemort says. "They will be nice and visible in your arms, right? Pick up your little friend, Hagrid. And the glasses- put on the glasses—m- he must be recognizable. Lucius do the same to the girl."

Someone slams my glasses onto my face aggressively, the hands that hold my body extremely rough. I knew Draco's dad didn't like me but I never thought he would be this mean.

I can hear Hagrid's heavy sobs as he carries my brother. It takes a lot of willpower not to start crying. He was always there when Harry needed and seeing his in this state is probably killing him.

"Move." Voldemort commands and walks in front of he group.

When I almost fall from Lucius Malfoy's arms, his wife walks by his side and whispers in his ear as slowly as she can.

"Be gentle. She feels it." He understands his wife's words as he gently lifts me higher and pulls me safely into his arms.

I want to whisper a thank you but know it's too risky.

We must have been walking for a long time, as Hagrid sobs and whispers Harry's name. I feel his big hand on my arm once in a while as Lucius carries me, but once Voldemort sees what the giant is doing, commands him to stop.

"Harry." Hagrid sobs. "Oh, Harry... Lilith..."

I shut my eyes tight, the tears threatening to spill at his words, the sadness behind them enough to break my heart. I know we're approaching the caste as my ears distinguish students' voices among the crowd.

"Stop."

The Death Eaters come to a halt. I hear them spreading out in a line in front of their opponents. People would see me in Lucius arms, lying as dead as a stick.

"NO!" Professor McGonagall screams at the sight of us. Another person, I'm sure is Bellatrix Lestrange, laughs vigorously.

I open my eyes as slowly and carefully as I can, and see the survivors of the battle coming out of the door in front of us, just outside of the Entrance Hall. I see Voldemort standing in front of me, stroking Nagini's head with a single white finger. He closes his eyes, and I look at my brother, catching him with his eyes slightly open. He smiles at me.

"No!"

"No!"

"Lilith! HARRY!"

"LILITH! NO!"

Ron's, Hermione's, Draco's and Ginny's voices are worse than McGonagall's. Because they're the ones I've been missing the most, and their despair hurts. A lot. I want to call back, raise my hands and show them I'm alright. But I know I can't do that. The crowd yells insults at the Death Eaters.

"SILENCE!" Voldemort cries, silence being forced upon everyone. "It's over! Set them down, Hagrid and Lucius, at my feet, where they belong!"

I feel myself lowered onto the soft grass.

"You see?" Voldemort says, and I feel him walking backward and forward right beside us. "Harry Potter is dead! Lilith Potter is dead! Do you understand now, deluded ones? They were nothing, ever, but a boy and a girl who relied on others to sacrifice themselves for them!"

"They beat you!" Ron yells, and the charm broke, and the defenders of Hogwarts are shouting and screaming again until a second, more powerful bang extinguishes their voices once again.

"They were killed while trying to sneak out of the castle grounds." Voldemort says, and there is happiness in his voice for the lie. "Poor Harry carrying his already dead sister. I had to be sure she was really dead after sending my precious Nagini after her. He was killed while trying to save himself-"

But Voldemort is interrupted by someone stepping forward. A flash of light passes my body and I open my eyes again to find my brother's gaze. He nods, knowing what to do.

Someone broke free of the crowd and is now charging at Voldemort. I see the figure hit the ground, disarmed, and Voldemort laughing as he throws the challenger's wand aside.

"And who is this?" He asks in his soft snake's hiss. "Who has volunteered to demonstrate what happens to those who continue to fight when the battle is lost?"

Bellatrix gives a delighted laugh. "It is Neville Longbottom, my Lord! The boy who has been giving the Carrows so much trouble! The son of the Aurors, remember?"

"Ah, yes, I remember..." Voldemort says, looking down at Neville, who is struggling back to his feet, unarmed and unprotected, standing in the no-man's-land between the survivors and the Death Eaters. "But you are a pureblood, aren't you, my brave boy?" Voldemort asks Neville, who stands facing him, his empty hands curled into fists.

"So what if I am?" Neville asks loudly.

"You show spirit and bravery, and you come of noble stock. You will make a very valuable Death Eater. We need your kind, Neville Longbottom."

"I'll join you when hell freezes over. Dumbledore's Army!" He shouts, and there is an answering cheer from the crowd, whom Voldemort's Silencing Charms seems unable to hold.

"Very well." Voldemort says calmly, and I hear more danger in the silkiness of his voice than in the most powerful curse. "If that is your choice, Longbottom, we revert to the original plan. On your head, be it."

Still watching through my lashes, I see Voldemort wave his wand.

Seconds later, out of one of the castle's shattered windows, something flies through the air and lands in Voldemort's hand. He shakes the object by its pointed end and it dangles, empty and ragged: the Sorting Hat.

"There will be no more Sorting at Hogwarts School." Voldemort smiles. "There will be no more Houses. The emblem, shield, and colors of my noble ancestor, Salazar Slytherin, will suffice for everyone. Won't they, Neville Longbottom?"

He points his wand at Neville, who grows rigid and still, then forces the hat onto Neville's head, so that it slips down below his eyes. I don't know what's happening but Harry is probably thinking about something. He has to have an idea.

"Neville here is now going to demonstrate what happens to anyone foolish enough to continue to oppose me," said Voldemort, and with a flick of his wand, he caused the Sorting Hat to burst into flames.

I look away from the scene and mHarry takes this moment to cover himself with his Invisibility Cloak, that I had no idea he had hidden under his clothes. I take my time to think of something, but Lucius did the unexpected and picked me up.

"You have two minutes until that boy dies. Do what you have to do." Narcissa hisses under her breath. I open my eyes and smile at her, while her husband waits patiently for me to say or do something.

I look at the crowd between my lashes and see Draco looking at me, his eyes broken. I don't move or do something. He would understand I'm alive and would do something. Harry is nowhere to be seen and in one swift fluid motion, Neville breaks free of the Body-Bind Curse and the flaming hat falls off him and he grabs something from inside the hat. It looks like a sword. With a single stroke Neville slices off Nagini's head, and Voldemort's mouth is open in a scream of fury that nobody can hear, and the snake's body falls to the ground at his feet.

"HARRY!" Hagrid shouts. "HARRY, WHERE'S HARRY?"

I look up at Lucius and he lets go of my body, me falling on my knees to grab my wand, hiding behind his body. I point it between Neville and Voldemort, and with the help of Harry from under the Cloak, we cast a Shielding Charm before Voldemort can pull himself together.

"AND LILITH? WHERE ARE THEY?"

Before anyone can see me, Harry runs to my side and covers me with the Cloak as well, and we start firing spells from left to right, moving around so no one can spot us. And all hell breaks loose when we start firing spells at the Death Eaters. The Dark Mark on the sky shines and a strange pain runs up my arm. When I look down I almost faint.

The Dark Mark on my arm is moving, at it hurts.

"Harry." I call his name but he's too busy pushing us around to enter the school. "Harry."

"Not now, Lilith. We have to reach the Great Hall."

We run away from each other, me leaving the safety of Harry's Cloak. As I pass by my old classmates and teachers, some of them shout words of encouragement and run along side me. I choose to enter the Great Hall, see if anyone needs my help.

I find Bellatrix and Molly fighting each other as I block a random Death Eater's spells. He manages to hit me with a very powerful one and I'm thrown against the wall, my head hitting the floor when I fall.

"Well, well. You wanted to deceive the Dark Lord and ended up being stunned by a fellow Death Eater." He points at the mark on my arm and removes his mask. Bruno. "Yeah, that's me. And I'll finish you before you can even say a counter sp-"

When he raises his wand to curse me, and possibly kill me, a green light hits him on the back of the head and he falls to the side, dead. I look up to my savior and my eyes land on those grey eyes I've dearly missed.

"Draco..." I whisper to myself.

Raising to my feet, I ignore the battles around us and hug him against my body. He lifts me up and circles my legs around his torso, burying his face on my neck.

"Bloody hell, I never thought I'd have you in my arms again." He says, his lips gracing the soft skin of my neck.

"You've been learning a thing or two with Ronald." I giggle when he laughs against my neck. It tickles. "I missed you."

"I missed you more, love."

"That's controversial." I smile, hugging him tighter. "I gotta go. I'm the hero here, I have to help."

"Can't you stay with me a little longer?" He asks.

"I don't know if you noticed it but there's a war going on and it's basically my fault. And Harry's. But he'll never admit it."

Draco stares at me with his mouth hanging open. I gently close it with my fingers, pushing his jaw up.

"You'll eat a fly if you don't close your mouth."

"You're brilliant..." He whispers. "You've survived death two times now, and you're a hero, and the best person I've ever met and-"

"Would you kiss me already?" I say impatiently.

I don't have to tell him that twice, as he smiles down at me and slams his lips against mine. The feeling of our lips dancing together, his tongue playing with mine, sends me to paradise. I feel like I can forget about everything and be in his arms forever. I feel safe with him and I love him dearly.

"I love you, Lilith Jamie Potter."

"I love you, Draco Lucius Malfoy." I smile as I detach myself from his body and start walking away. The surprised look on his face is enough to make me laugh.

"How do you know my middle name?"

---------------

The feeling that something is wrong with my brother overwhelmed me as I turn around and look up. Voldemort and Harry are having a very nasty fight on top of one of the towers. Sudently, my fear of heights is forgotten as the thought of my brother's dead body, this time for real, invades my mind. No, I won't let that happen.

I run as fast as my legs allow me and reach them faster than I expected. Voldemort grabs Harry by the throat and throws him against the nearest wall. I point my wand at the evil man, pondering on what I should do. I don't want to accidentally hit Harry and hurt him, so I wait for the right moment to atfack. When Voldemort is right in front of me, his back to me, I shout 'Expelliarmus', but nothing happened. He turns to me, his permanent sneer now a deep scowl.

"Look who decided to join the party. So you're alive too?"

I ignore his comment and join my brother, pulling him to me as we try to escape, or find something better to do with the man in front of us. Looks like Harry has an idea because unlike, before Voldemort manages to catch us again, he opens his mouth.

"Hey you were right." Harry says, earning a slap on the cheek. "When you told Professor Snape that wand was failing you. It'll always fail you."

This time, Voldemort manages to grab my arm and my back hits the wall before I can react.

"I killed Snape." Voldemort says in his stupid voice. I just hate him, can you blame me? He killed me. Three times. And now I receive this info that he killed Severus too.

Oh, I do hate him.

"But the wand never belonged to Snape." Harry smirks and helps me to my feet. He and I together fire spells and counter spells. "What if it's allegiance was linked to someone else?"

They get on each other's face and I decide to guide them to an edge where we could throw Voldemort or something.

"C'mon, Tom" I taunt him as Harry understands my unspoken message. "Let's finish this the way we started."

"Together!" Harry and I shout at the same time and enter lace our arms around d Voldemort's shoulders.

And jump off the edge with him. I have to admit this wasn't my first idea but we can make it work. Voldemort uses his Death Eater power, that's what I like to call it, and we fly around the school grounds, knocking a few things down as we pass by. I cringe and yell when Voldemort pulls my hair and yanks my head back. It feels like the three of us are one, the air around us twirling and I feel nauseous.

And in just a few seconds all of it stops and the three of us fall on the patio, our wands flying away from us because of the impact. We look up and inspect each other's positions, crawling to our own wands. I'm the first to retrieve mine and I spin around on my knees, watching as my brother and Voldemort do the same.

"AVADA KEDAVRA."

Three voices fire the same spell at the same time, three flashes of light erupting from the wands. Mine is light yellow, while Harry's is red and Voldemort's green.

I can feel myself lose control of my body and mind, the spell suddenly too strong for me to handle. I command my body to obey my mind, not to give up or this was all in vain. Mom, dad, Sirius, Severus, free... Their deaths will not be forgotten and I'll avenge them. With Harry's help, we'll end this terror that torments the world.

I look up from the light as they slam together and fight for dominance. I see mom and dad on my side, smiling at me. On the other side is Severus, his hand laying protectively on my shoulder. Just seeing them gives me strength to hold on.

My light runs deeper than Harry's and attacks Voldemort's own green light. The noseless man's body starts shaking as his skin turns yellow instead of white, his eyes red and bloody. He chokes on a word he will never say and I watch with deep pleasure as he crumbles to the floor, the Elder Wand flying to Harry. He catches it like an expert and I keep my eyes on Voldemort.

He shakes his head that starts to look like a cracked piece of porcelain. The final crack is heard before he falls forward and disappears in a pile of ash.

Harry shouts beside me but I feel nothing. He is happy and celebrating our victory but I can't do the same. Not when I can't feel my own body. I stumble to my feel and find Harry's arm to keep me up. He looks at me with worry and before I can say anything...

I fall.
