Broke and Babysitting

It was October 25th, 2026.  Bree was in the middle of getting her masters degree and she and Conner were officially living together in an apartment not far from the campus. The apartment wasn't the nicest but at least it was something.

Conner sat on their couch with a bag of chips in his arms staring at the wall. He was trying to write his first book and didn't know where to start. All of a sudden the door opened. It was his fiancé, Bree. She came in with a handful of books and grocery bags.

"Hey, Conner," Bree said dumping everything on the kitchen counters. She took a sigh of relief that all those bags and books were not in her arms anymore and looked at Conner who was still sitting on the couch and didn't bother to help.

"No, I didn't need any help bringing all this stuff up the stairs because the elevator was broken, but thanks for offering," Bree said sarcastically and rolled her eyes. "What are you looking at?"

"Nothing," Conner said. "I have no idea how I'm going to start my story."

"You still haven't done that yet?" Bree said and walked over to him. "What have you done this entire day?"

"Sit and I walked around campus, then I came back here and discovered the oven was broken. So I went to get pizza."

"It broke again!" Bree said in a frustrated tone and walked back to the kitchen. "I'll have to call my mom. She's the one who has to pay for repairs."

"I hate that they have to pay for repairs and this crap apartment," Conner said. "We should be able to do this ourselves."

"I'm sorry do you have a job? Because the last time I checked you don't, and I'm in school." Bree said. "Conner if we were married, we would be living in worse conditions. Our parents wouldn't pay for this apartment."

"I know, I know it's cheaper than an apartment on campus. I'm thankful, but..."

"But what?" Bree said and sat next to him.

"I'm scared."

"Scared of what?" Bree said confused.

"What happens when we have kids?" Conner said and looked at Bree.

"Conner, not this again." Bree said and tilted her head back obviously annoyed from this conversation.

"I'm just saying."

"Conner you know how I feel about this. I'm not the motherly type of person." Bree said. "I don't know about kids."

"I know, but what if?" Conner said. "How would we support them, if we can't even afford to buy food for ourselves."

"That's far off in the future. I'm sure we'll be good by then." Bree said. "I'm sure we'll have jobs."

"Oh yeah, I told Alex we would babysit Annabelle tonight and that she could sleep over."

"Really? I thought she had a nanny?"

"I guess not." Conner said.

"Well I guess so, she can sleep on the couch." Bree said. Suddenly a bright light appeared in front of them and Alex and little Annabelle. Annabelle wore a pink princess dress with her blonde hair in two braids.

"Hey, guys." Alex said. The pair got up from the couch and gave Alex a hug.

"Wow, Annabelle you got big!" Conner said and kneeled down and gave her a massive hug. "We haven't seen you since you were a little baby. How old are you now?"

Annabelle smiled and hid behind her mother and showed 4 fingers.

"Your four! Wow." Conner said and smiled.

"Thank you so much for watching her guys."

"Your welcome. Good thing I don't have class tomorrow and I don't have any homework."  Bree said.  "We'll be able to spend a lot of time with her."

"Great!"  Alex said.  "Hey sorry I sprang this on you at the last second.  Arthur and I are going to meet the king and queen in the neighboring kingdom and our nanny quit on us yesterday.  Don't ask."

"Well, it's fine we'll have a great time,"  Conner said.

"Annabelle you're going to stay with Uncle Conner and Aunt Bree and I'll pick you up tomorrow,"  Alex said.

Annabelle nodded her head.  Alex kissed the top of her daughters head and opened the portal.

"Thanks again,"  Alex said and waved goodbye.

"No problem," Conner said.  Alex kissed Annabelle again and went into the portal. "So...what do you like to do Annabelle?

Annabelle just shrugged her shoulders and looked around the tiny cramped apartment.

"We could go see a play tonight,"  Conner said.

"Yes, if we had the money."  Bree reminded him.

"Ok, how about a movie?"  Bree opened her wallet and looked at the cash she had and nodded.

"I think we can do that."  Bree said.

"Want to go to a movie Annabelle?"  Conner asked.

"Is that what Grandma takes me to?  Where you sit in a dark room and watch moving pictures?"

"Yes, thats what it is,"  Bree said.  "Want to go?"

Annabelle nodded excitedly.  Conner and Bree put their coats and shoes on and walked to the movie theater.  The line for the theater was wrapped around the block as the new long-awaited Marvel spiderman movie had just come out.

"Gosh, this line is long.  Hopefully, there will still be seats left."  Conner said.  It was 10 minutes later when they got to the front of the line.  "2 students and 1 child for Spiderman."

"There's only 2 seats left for that movie."  The movie employee said.

"It's ok Conner I'll go to the library and do some studying.  You two go and see it."  Bree said.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah go,"  Bree said.  "Text me when it's done, I'll meet you at home."

Conner nodded and kissed Bree and turned back to pay for the tickets.  Bree walked to the NYU dorm rooms and knocked on the door of room 202.  Her best friend Maddie opened the door.

"Hey, Bree, what's up?"

"Want to hang out?"  Bree asked.  "Or talk?"

"Sure come in,"  Maddie said and Bree walked inside and Maddie closed the door behind her.

"We're babysitting Conner's niece, tonight."

"That sounds fun.  I loved babysitting when I was in high school.  Need advice?"

"Majorly,"  Bree said and smiled.  "Conner took her out to a movie right now.  They only had two seats left, which is good because we only had money for two seats."

Bree sighed and sat on Maddie's bed and put her hand on her face.  Maddie noticed her friends frustration and sat next to her.

"What are we going to do?  We're barely making it, and our parents are paying for our necessities."  Bree said.  "We're soon going to have to pay back our students loans."

"I get it, I'm going through the same thing,"  Maddie said.  "I think we all are.  We just have to hope that we are going to have jobs after school ends."

"Conners talking about kids again too."

"You know I've told before that you would be an insanely cool mom,"  Maddie said.  Bree let out a small laugh and rolled her eyes.  "I mean it.  I would so strick and you would be the mom who lets their kids out after dark and let them eat ice cream for dinner and you'd have spontaneous dance parties."

"I don't even how to be the cool aunt.  I couldn't think of anything we all could do.  Conner suggested the movies and I said yes because I couldn't think of anything else that didn't cost a fortune."

"You know everything I just said that you would do as a cool mom, is also things a cool young aunt would do,"  Maddie said and looked at her friend.  "Which means you don't have to have money to have a great time with your amazing boyfriend and your cute niece."

"Your right Maddie.  Thanks for the suggestions."  Bree said.  "I'll text you later."  Bree got up and walked to the door.

"Your welcome,"  Maddie said as her friend walked out her door.

Bree ran over to the school's bookstore and got ice cream, chips and an assortment of junk food.    She charged it all to her credit card and ran back home.  She put the ice cream in the freezer (Good thing that was still working), and the rest of the stuff on the table and waited for them to come home.

Conner and Annabelle got out of the movie an hour later and walked home to find Bree in the living room and all of the junk food on the table.

"Hey how was the movie?"  Bree asked and walked over to them.

"It was good, whats all of this?"  Conner said.

"Trying to be a cool aunt,"  Bree said.

"You never buy this type of food...no matter how hard I ask,"  Conner said looking at all of the food.

"Well, Annabelle wasnt here before,"  Bree said and kneeled down to Annabelle's level.  "What do you noramlly do at your grandma's house?

"I usually eat dinner and then read a book,"  Annabelle said.  "Boring stuff."

"Yeah, that's not happening here, because we don't do that."  Bree said.

"So what are we going to do?"  Annabelle asked.

"Something Conner and I would do when we were in high school was invite our friends over, put music on, eat junk food, and watch funny movies."  Bree said and stood up.

"YES!" Conner said and hugged Bree from behind and swung her around and kissed her.  "Thank you, but what made you want to do this?"

"Because I've always thought that you needed money to have fun with a kid, but you don't.  So I was reminded of what we used to do back in high school.  So, let's do this."

For the rest of the night, Bree and Conner played all their favorite songs and danced around with Annabelle, ate food, laughed a lot and watched funny movies until Annabelle fell asleep between them on the couch.

"I missed this."  Conner said softly trying not to wake Annabelle up.

"Me too."

"This was nice to just forget about everything going on and just have fun.  This is the us I miss."

"Me too, and I'm sorry for snapping at you before, about you not having a job."  Bree apologized.

"It's fine I get it.  I'll try and find a job tommorow because we need the extra cash."  Conner said.  Bree smiled and leaned over and kissed Conner.

"Also, I'll think about the having a kid  idea.  Tonights shown me that it may not be that bad."  Bree said and smiled at Annabelle.

"It doesn't have to be soon.  It can be a few years or months after we get married."

"I think years Conner.  I want to write books and you want to as well.  We also have to move, because I'm not living in this apartment with a baby."

"Same, also I think I know how to start my story.  That spiderman movie gave me an idea,"  Conner said.  "So anyways, what baby names do you like?

"To be honest I've never thought of names for my future kids because I never thought I would have any,"   Bree said.  "But I've always just loved the name, Matthew.  I don't know why though.  What about you?"

"I've always liked the name Carrie and I don't know why either,"  Conner said.  "I can't believe we've never had this baby name conversation."

"Maybe because I have always shot down the conversation whenever its brought up.  I'm sorry."

"It's ok.  We'll have kids when its time.  For right now, watching this little one is pretty fun."

"Yeah, this was fun.  We should ask Alex to bring her over more often."

Conner and kissed Annabelle's forehead and kissed Bree on the lips.  The couple soon fell asleep peacfully sitting on the couch with Annabelle.
