The Convict

Trevor watched the wolf through a crack in the floor. He and his mate Darwin had been digging a network of tunnels under the city for days, and this was an important opening. Darwin was across from him in the small chamber they had just finished digging out. "Darwin, where is the other one? There was two yesterday." Trevor asked. "I don't know. Maybe they took her as a Cart Bearer. Either that, or..." "Or she's been taken to the Death House," Trevor finished. Darwin gulped and handed Trevor a small handsaw. Trevor started making a sizeable hole in the wood planks. The convict in the clay hut gasped and backed against the far wall. The hole was cut and a few pieces of wood fell into the chamber. Darwin climbed into the room and  raised his hands as a sign of peace. "Peace, brother. We mean no harm," he said. Suddenly the door flew open and a guard tossed in a teenage wolf girl in shabby clothing. He didn't notice Darwin. The girl grumbled and stood up, dusting herself off. "Stupid guards! What do they want us for anyway, except to drag their carts of garbage." She then realized that her fellow convict was missing. "Luke? Luke, where are you? Luke! Mmmmpppphhhh!" a rough hand covered her mouth and pulled her into a damp cave. She could hardly see in the dim light.  A gentle voice whispered, but she could not understand the words.

I grabbed the girl convict and pulled her into the chamber. "I'm sorry, but I have to do this," I whispered, but I didn't think she heard me. I placed a rag over her mouth. The rag had a substance on it that made her pass out. Darwin and I carried the two convicts to our tree-house. "They will be missed soon enough. We need to cover our tracks," I said. Darwin nodded. "I'll go close up the tunnel. That should deter them." He said, throwing a cloak over his shoulders. I sighed as he left. The male convict groaned. I rushed over and bent down over him. He woke up and reached for his head. "Ughnnnn..... Where am I...?" he moaned slowly. "Somewhere safe, I assure you." I said. He sat up, startled. "Chillaxe! It's all right. Calm down." I assured him.

I pull the hood up over my head and move slowly, with my head down. I look like a common villager, walking around and doing business. I make it to the edge of the woods and start to run, letting the hood fall back to my shoulders. I hear rapid footsteps behind me, and run faster. "HEY! GET BACK HERE!" I hear someone shout. A rope fells from a great Oak. I grab it and start to climb. I glance down and see a Hreacian Soldier waving his sword below.  Trevor's head comes out of the leaves, grinning. "I thought you might need a lift. The convicts are awake, and I managed to calm them down enough to talk to them, and I've learned quit a bit." He said, pulling up the rope. I followed him back to our tree-house, explaining what I had done. "I closed up the hole in the floor, and collapsed the cavern. I was seen as I went into the forest, but not while I was in town." I said. "Good," Trevor said. "I hope they don't think to look in the trees for the missing convicts."

I shifted uncomfortably on the floor, waiting for the wolf called Trevor to return. Luke sat next to me, staring off into space. "Luke, do you think Trevor will really come back? I mean, can we trust him? Wait, are you even listening to me? LUKE!!" I said, punching his shoulder. "Huh? Oh, uh, sorry Rose... What did you say?" He said, waking from his trance. " Well, I was asking what you thought about that Trevor character. Do you think we can trust him? And what about Darwin, the fox he speaks of?" I asked, exasperated at Luke's deep thought session. "Hmm... Well, I don't think we have a choice but to trust them for now. Think about it. It's not like we can run away, we don't even know the way back. And even if we did, do you really want to go live that all over again?" He said, looking into my eyes. I was about to say something, but just then two people came into the small space. "Well, I said I'd come back, didn't I?" Trevor said, reading my expression.I sighed and stood up. "So, you must be Darwin. How long are you gonna keep us here?" I asked, glaring at him. "That is entirely up to you. We're not beasts you know." The fox replied. I gave Luke a questioning look. He just shrugged and picked up a twig that had blown in. "What do you mean, entirely up to us?" I asked, making eye contact. "Exactly that, you can go if you want. The town is about a mile to the East. If you want, you can walk right out of here." Trevor said, whittling a block of wood. Luke groaned and stood up. "Well, what do you think Rose, stay or leave?"
