Who are You? Who am I?... What?
Tears of frustration ran down the red cheeks of the troubled child as he stomped through the train station, desperately trying to dry his eyes but failing as more tears formed and spilled. God, why can't I stop crying?! He continued and stopped as his train pulled into the station. When the doors opened he groaned at the number of people and walked into the overflowing car. This was the car he always took, mothers orders, but he moved to the next car to try and find some open seats, but it wasn't any better than the previous one.
He sighed, sniffling a little, attempting to dry his eyes again but to no avail, before going to grab onto the pole for support. Then he noticed a nice open seat with only one person sitting on it. He didn't think too much of it and walked over to sit down. Why hasn't anyone else sat down here? He questioned. He decided the best course of action was to not make any contact with the person sitting next to him in order to avoid embarrassment or awkwardness. He continued to sniffle and wipe his eyes while avoiding eye contact with anyone else on the train.
He doesn't know what drove him to look, or what made him notice the silent melody being hummed next to him on the insanely loud train. He also doesn't know how he knew the melody or why he felt he'd heard it a thousand times before. However, he did hear the melody and he did look over. His breath hitched. There she was, the woman. Or at least he thought for a second it was, but that was impossible. The woman only appeared in his dream. But yet, here she was. A woman that looked like a replica of the one hed been seeing in his dreams for the last year and a half. The one he'd been seeing since his Dad left.
He tried denying it in his head over and over again, trying to find a reason but to no avail. Everything about her was the same. Right down to the teacup and book. Her large variety of necklaces and handmade bracelets. Even the two gemstone earrings were the same. "Hello, Can I help you? Would you like to listen as well?" A calm, elegant voice snapped Kei out of his thoughts as the women held out an earbud to him with a soft smile on her face. There was something strange about her voice, but also beautiful.
There was a thick accent to her voice but he couldn't think of what accent it could be. "U-u-uh...I-I um G-guess? I-I mean...Sure?" He stumbled over his words, attempting to find the right ones. The women's eyes settled on his own and he felt that he was floating when looking in her bi-colored eyes. He took the earbud, eyes never leaving the women, and inserted it into his ear. The woman tapped around on her phone and the song started.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Listen to the song at the top~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the song played he was constantly sneaking peeks at the women to his left. The foreign lyrics and melody drifted through his mind and he tried pinpointing where he had heard them before. When the song was over he handed her the earbud back, "Thank you..." He mumbled. He kept his eyes on the ground now, not knowing what to do. Should he tell her? Should he ask her if she recognized him? Is he still going to have those dreams? What now?
"You were crying." Once again her voice broke through his thoughts. He looked up at her, "Uh... Yeah... I guess I was..." He trailed, swinging his legs as an awkward silence, or at least to him it was, fell between the two. "Does little friend mind sharing what was causing those tears of sadness?" she asked, her wording strange and her accent making it even stranger. "Um... Sure... I-I mean if it doesn't bother you! I don't want to... Um... bother you..." He said rushing his words out rather quickly. However, the woman showed no signs of annoyance as a patient smile graced her face. "I do not mind little one! Please, tell большая сестра what is bothering you!" She said, closing her book and taking a sip out of her porcelain teacup.
And that's what he did, for the rest of his ride till his stop. He told her all about how his life was before that night. Before his Dad and Mom were yelling at each other and his Mom had shoved his Dad out the door with a suitcase. He didn't know why but in his eyes his mom changed. His mom became a mean person who nitpicked at every little detail and was constantly pestering him about everything and never letting him do anything. And during it all, the woman just kept a calm smile as she listened to the small boy's story.
After his rant, he huffed and crossed his arms. "I wish I could live in a different world... My dad once told me about these things called 'Fairytales' but I haven't heard any of them before..." He created quotation marks with his fingers as he said "Fairytales". His Dad had told him that some time ago there were these things called "Fairytales" but it was frowned upon to tell a child about such nonsense. He could vaguely remember his dad saying something along the lines of, "Telling Fairytales became frowned upon when this world became real, and I completely agree! You need to grow up smart, not with that nonsense in your head." He had also told him about these thing called "Legends" Those were like fairytales but slightly more realistic.
"Hold on, маленький мальчик, you have never heard a Fairytale?" She asked, a slightly surprised expression on her face. "No? And what are those words you keep saying?" He asked referring to the strange words she had spoken. "Oh! It is my native tongue!" She smiled, "First I referred to my self as big sister, or большая сестра (bol'shaya sestra), and second I referred to you as little boy or, маленький мальчик (malen'kiy mal'chik)." She explained. He smiled, "That's so cool Ms. Lady!" She smiled at this and nodded.
Suddenly the loudspeaker announced his stop. He turned to the woman and bowed, "Thank you very much Miss." She once again smiled before placing her hand on his shoulder, "It was not a problem маленький!" Kei suddenly realized something, "Wait! Who are you Ms.Lady?" he asked. She smiled and tilted her head with a smile, "I do not know, I am still trying to find that out myself. I think the better question is who you think you are." Kei just tilted his head in confusion at her words. "Um... I don't really get it..." he said and she just smiled and leaned back. "You do not have to. It was most enchanting talking to you, Kei."
She waved as the door to the train began to close shut. "Yeah! You too, Miss Lady!" He said waving her goodbye until the door closed completely. What a strange woman... Kei thought to himself, but... wait a second, at the end of her sentence she had said Kei's name... He never told her his name...
