Chapter 7. Refraction

When I woke up this morning I knew it was going to be a stressful day. So I found out my weed smoke pen. After I found it in my vent stash I then decided to have my usual morning shower before changing into my outfit for today.

Let's face it the school had given up with giving me a dress code. I then did my makeup.

I grabbed my pen and put it in my pocket before finding a pair of nice looking heels to put on. I grabbed my bag before walking downstairs. "You better not wear that to the open house tonight." Mom said to me disappointedly, I grabbed myself a piece of toast and started to eat it.

"I've got nothing better to wear." I said before heading out the front door. I took my heels off to drive. I put them on the passenger seat before driving off to school. Someone had parked in my spot so I wasn't happy about that. I managed to find another spot so I parked there instead. No teachers were nearby so as soon as I put my heels on I started to vape. Only for 5 minutes. Of course I was going to get high, so freaking high. After I'd finished vaping I put the vape into the compartment and got out the car. I saw Chase and Karolina.

"Are you alright, Y/n?" Karolina asked me. I wrapped my arm around Chase.

"I'm just really high." I said with a giggle.

"On open house day?" Chase asked me disappointedly.

"Yeah, why not." I said while smiling. Chase wrapped his arm around me and we walked over to Gert and Nico.

"Any chance our parents can get arrested before they talk to our teachers?" Karolina asked while looking at the banner, I started laughing.

"Yeah, I can't say that I've been a banner student lately." Alex said to us.

"I never have been." I said while smiling.

"Who can even think about homework?" Nico asked, I never once thought about homework.

"Guess we'll have a hell of a personal essay for our college applications." Chase said, I wasn't going to college. I'd always thought about traveling over the world.

"Isn't this adorbs! You kids planning a big double date? What do the kids do for fun these days? Is it a...escape room? Karaoke? A knitting circle?" Gert asked while walking over.

"Usual get high." I said while nodding slowly.

"No one is planning a date." Nico said while pulling her bag up.

"Escape room does sound sick, though." Chase said with a smile, technically we were all in one big escape room but the room was our parents and we were escaping them.

"If it meant escaping here." Karolina said to him.

"That was good one." I said while laughing.

"Whoa, zinger! Karolina, you should sign up for the school improv troupe." Gert said making me roll my eyes.

"Guys, we're supposed to be taking on our parents, not each other." Alex said to us, that was true but Gert was annoying I can't help it.

"Well, what's happening with the video data?" Chase asked him.

"Like are we releasing it soon or are we just leaving it alone?" I asked Alex while making hand gestures as I was talking.

"I'm still working on it. It's harder to unlock than I thought, and now my parents are on my ass." Alex said to us, my parents never cared about me.

"Yeah, mine too." Gert said while looking down.

"Do you think they know?" Karolina asked us.

"It's impossible for them to know." I said while looking to the side, I was wondering how long this high was going to last. Whether it would be half an hour or more.

"I'm not sure, how." Alex said, there was no possible way of them knowing. Was there?

"Oh!" Molly said, she dropped something on the flood but I couldn't think of what it was.

"It's okay. We can put it back together." Nick said as she bent down to help Molly.

"Who cares? Who cares about a double helix!" Molly shouted at us, that was what it was called.

"Molly, is everything okay?" Gert asked Molly, what was up with her?

"I screwed up, you guys. I got something to tell you." She said and we all looked at her. What was it? She told us everything and we all sat down, I couldn't believe it.

"Are you kidding?" Gert asked her in disbelief.

"I know, I panicked. Your mom is very intimidating." Molly told us an excuse. No one intimidated me more than myself.

"Well, she had the conviction rate to prove it. Now you're telling me she's been suspicious of you from the beginning." Alex said, this was just great. I would've thought that Gert would give it away but maybe I was wrong.

"Not to mention you're responsible for only working bathroom at Timely Coffee." Chase said, it was nightmare, the lines were longer.

"If they know you saw the robes, they know you got down the staircase." Nico said to her, that was very much true.

"Unless they wear their robes to other places, like the gym, or Whole Foods." Gert said, I laughed at her stupidness.

"Yeah, because our parents are really going to wear satanic looking robes out in public." I said trying to keep a straight face.

"Then again, nothing in my house has changed. In fact, it's gotten better." Chase said, well except from one teeny thing.

"Except for the fact that our parents are having an affair." Nico said with a fake smile plastered on her face.

"No, that's all over. My mom told me this morning." Chase said, at least that was a bonus. I guess.

"Well, at least I know my parents are living in my room." Alex said to us.

"At least my parents still don't a give a shit about me." I said while laughing.

"Dude, I said I'm sorry." Molly said apologetically.

"Why didn't you tell us, Molly? Why didn't you tell me?" Gert asked, I knew that Molly had a reason.

"Every time I try to tell you guys stuff, you act like I'm some kid who can't be believed. The only person who always believes me is Y/n." Molly said, I swear she trusted me more than Gert sometimes and I treasured that.

"It's not your fault. This is too much for us to handle, let alone someone your age." Karolina told us, I was pretty sure that I could handle this. Maybe that was the weed talking I don't know.

"You're, like, three years older?" Molly asked her rhetorically.

"This is why I literally tried to protect you from seeing this." Gert said, what was the point on trying to protect her from finding out the truth. It would come out eventually.

"We can't do this thing if we can't trust each other." Alex said, that was very much true.

"I'm super honest." Molly said, she could be at times.

"I am as well, most of the time." I said honestly but Gert didn't listen to my comment.

"Yeah, Molly, maybe a little too honest sometimes." Gert said to her, I felt bad for Molly having to put up with her on a daily basis.

"You know what? Forget it. If after all we've been through this is how it's gonna be, then I don't want anything to do with you guys!" Molly told us before walking away.

"Molly, hold on!" Karolina told us.

"Molly, please wait." I said to her, she threw her helix in the trash before continuing to walk away. Me and Karolina went after her. It had been over half an hour and the effect was wearing off of me. I was slowly becoming sober again.

"I really hope that she changes her mind, we need her." Karolina said we followed after her.

"Exactly, we may all have our own advantages but we need Molly with us." I said while looking at her, we continued to follow after Molly. When we found her she was talking to Effiel. I couldn't stand her. I'm guessing Molly wanted to join the dance team. When they started walking away, me and Karolina walked over to her.

"Hey, you all right?" Karolina asked as we bent down to talk to Molly.

"If she said something, just pay no attention to her. That's what I do." I said with a light laugh.

"I guess I deserve it, right, since I ruin everything?" She asked us, we helped her fold up the towels.

"You don't ruin everything." Karolina said to her reassuringly.

"Besides it was a mistake." I said to her with a reassuring smile.

"We were all friends. Everything was going great." Molly said to us, I could still go great.

"That's what we love about you, Molly. Our parents are killers, the cops are crooked, and we almost got killed by some gang members. But you see it as 'everything is going great.'" Karolina said and we all gave out a light laugh.

"We're the only one who stay positive during this times." I said with a smile.

"Maybe my true super power is my positive attitude." She said with a smile, it was nice to see her be so positive.

"Now you sound like a poster in my dentist's office." Karolina said making her laugh.

"A poster with a cat in a superhero costume is what comes to mind." I said making them laugh even more.

"So does this mean you guys and I are still friends?" She asked us with a smile.

"We'll never stop being friends." I said with a smile, I may not have liked Karolina before all of this but she'd grown on me. In a good way of course.

"Of course. We share the kind of secret that nobody else understands." Karolina said, we were the only ones who had superhero like powers that weren't just accessories.

"Yeah. What's the fun of flying if you can't tell anyone? Or the fun in being able to move anything you want if you can't show anyone?" Molly said to us in a hushed tone.

"Or changing colors and being able to defend yourself with the colors?" I said with a smile.

"Or lifting a truck with your bare hands?" Karolina said in a hushed tone. We were the only three who could properly understand each other.

"You know, I just with everyone else felt the same." Molly said to us, we both nodded then the bell went off. "Well, it's...I gotta go." Molly added as we all stood up.

"All right. Come on." Karolina said as we all walked away.

"We'll walk you to class." I said with a smile. I could trust all of them with anything. Well that's what it felt like. I couldn't entirely trust Gert and I don't think I'd ever be able to. Especially since she wanted to Chase, I wouldn't be able to trust until she was in college and far away from me and Chase's relationship. We walked Molly to class before heading to our own classes. When the school day was over we headed home for a short amount of time before heading back there but with our parents. We were situated in the back row, which was a good thing.

"Welcome to Atlas Academy's Annual Open House. Our students and faculty have been preparing for this night for months...and we're all thrilled to share what we've been up to. We have student club booths for you to visit, as well as special displays throughout the campus." The speaker was telling us before I stopped paying attention for a little bit. "I am certain there is something surprising waiting for you at this year's open house. Now, for the past decade, we have been recognizing our outstanding students and their dedicated mentors..." She continued this was so boring. "...tradition, and one I look forward to greatly each year. One of my favorite aspects of this open house is the chance to experience some of the fruits of our students' scholarly and creative activity. We learn more from our students themselves..." She said.

"She sounds like she's been smoking something, fruits, what is with that?" I asked my parents in a hushed tone.

"I'm sure she's just being herself, now let's listen to what she has left." Mom said to me, I crossed my eyes and looked at the woman speaking.

"...You will see many impressive examples of that." She said to us, I saw a hand shoot up in the front. "Mr. Stein, you had a question?" She asked him.

"Will there be an opportunity to interface with the faculty this evening? I wanted to personally thank each and everyone of my son's instructors. They've helped mold him into a fine young man." He said to her. That didn't seem like Mr. Stein at all.

"We welcome input from all our parents. Now, if you'll proceed to your first classrooms." She said to us, we all stood up and exited the room. We all sorta split up to look at the different booths. I stayed Nico but I gave her some space when and was talking to her dad. She walked over to me when she was done.

"My dad wants me to get dinner with him and Chase's mom." She said to me as we walked on.

"What did you say?" I asked her curiously.

"I said that I didn't want to." She said to me, I nodded. We walked around and tried to find the others. I had no idea where my parents were all I knew was that I didn't care where they were. Me and Nico both received texts from Chase, saying that we needed to meet up. It must be urgent if he wants all of us.

"We know the Wilders' know about Molly." Karolina told us, I think we all knew that.

"So, if they told the Yorkes..." Chase trailed off.

"Then they're probably wondering if we're talking. 'Cause if Molly told me, then- -" Gert said before Nico cut her off.

"You could've told all of us." Nico said to us.

"And we might've been planning to tell people about it." I said while running my hand through my hair.

"We just need this goddamn thing to decrypt." Alex said to us, the sooner it was decrypted the better.

"What happens when it does? Have you thought about that?" Chase asked Alex, I was hoping that he would have something in mind.

"Well, then it's out of our hands, which I'm okay with." Alex said to us, so that was a good thing.

"Yeah, me too. They did this." Gert said to us.

"They deserve what's coming to them." I said while playing with my hair.

"Exactly. They need to be held accountable for their actions." Karolina said to us, I didn't care what would happen to my parents just as long as they were put away.

"Yeah, at least you'll still have your dad." Chase said, that was very much try. Some of us would have nowhere to go but I'd be fine. I'd travel around in my car until I find somewhere to settle down.

"Super. Frank Dean can raise us all." Gert said sarcastically, that would be the worst.

"Being here tonight feels totally ridiculous, like we're living fake lives or something." Nico said, I nodded and pulled my jacket over my body.

"Yeah, well, we are..." Alex said before his computer beeped. "...But shit's about to get really real." Alex said, at least something was going to happen.

"Stay in touch tonight in case anything happens." Chase said, trust me I wouldn't need it. I was thinking off packing a bag as soon as I got home and start to drive somewhere. I've heard that Rhode Island is nice so I might head there.

"Great, thanks for calming us down." Gert said to him sarcastically.

"Yup, really gonna sleep well tonight." Nico said to us.

"Well, I'll be driving all night so I can't really call anyone." I said with a smile.

"Driving to where?" Karolina asked me curiously.

"Rhode Island, somewhere far away from here. Away from our parents." I said with a smile. I was hoping that it would go down well with them.

"I think we should all stay here until are parents are in jail." Alex said to me, I sighed.

"At least then we can lookout for each other." Nico said, I just wanted to be on the road already.

"Fine, I'll put a hold on my plan until this is over." I said with a sigh. We wrapped up our talk and walked away. When I got home, I did the usual thing and went straight up to my room.

"Y/n, can you come down here!" Dad shouted at me. I stood up from my desk chair and walked downstairs.

"What is it?" I asked while crossing my arms.

"We just wanted to say that we're impressed by your schoolwork and that if there's something troubling you, you can talk to us." Mom said to me, this was strange behavior.

"Was that it?" I asked them while looking at the clock.

"Yes, you may." Dad told us, what a waste of time that was. When I made it to the top step who a heard a few car alarms go off by I thought nothing of it. It probably wasn't that serious. The amount of times I hear car alarms go off in this neighborhood makes me question if this place is safe or not. Well I definitely isn't now seeming as I know what kind of killer parents live amongst us, it's easier to identify them now. I walked to my room and just sat at my desk texting Karolina, I'm about to say it, we're friends. Never thought I'd say that again. When she had to go I just put some Day6 on and just listened to their music with my eyes shut.
