MOTHER'S FEAR
After a brief stay in Hastinapur the matter of our education came up. Kul Guru Kripacharya's brother in law offered to take up the princes under his wing in his Gurukul and provide their education. Pitamaha Bhishma decided that Guru Dron was a good choice to be the boys' teacher and therefore they were sent to his gurukul.
My mother was a bit reluctant about sending her sons away as she feared for their safety but after speaking to Pitamaha and Guru Dron she agreed. Her fear wasn't totally unnecessary. Just a few days ago Duryodhan, our oldest cousin who was same age as Bhrata Bheem had literally tried to kill him by poisoning. Bhratashree had gone missing for eight whole days leaving us worried sick. Mother hadn't left a single stone unturned but he was nowhere to be found and then he had returned on his own. Alive. Duryodhan had poisoned and thrown him into the Ganga which was inhabited by a serpent population and their King was somehow related to us on the maternal side. He had recognized Bhrata Bheem when his body had drowned in the river due to losing sense as an after effect of the poison which later causes death. The King Vasuki helped in removing the poison from my brother's body and fed him nectar. He later blessed him with the strength of ten thousand elephants.
Our cousins and we treated each other with hostility from the very first day but this plan to murder someone turned a whole new leaf in our lives. We learnt later that Bhrata Bheem used to bully our cousins from time to time and that infuriated them. This fueled by their jealousy and general hatred towards us led to this murder plan. We knew our brother was at fault but killing someone for that felt wrong.
I was set to leave for the Kanyavas along with Dushalla for our education just after our brothers left but my mother disagreed. She wouldn't let me go anywhere as she thought that as my brothers were untouchable in Guru Dron's protection I would be the
next target and staying in a Kanyavas would just make it easier.
But she knew my education was necessary. She hatched a plan with Kakashree Vidur's help. She contacted her brother Vasudev who had just been freed from the demon king Kans by his sons and asked him to write a letter to the King , requesting him to send me as his ward his place in Mathura. He said I could return to Hastinapur when I was off age and had finished my education. My mother thought I would be safe in Mathura and she wasn't wrong I felt safer Mathura than in Hastinapur.
The King , my uncle Dhitarashtra didn't know such details of my mother's intricate plan and agreed to send me away and I was taken to Mathura by Pitamaha.
In Mathura I was greeted by my uncle Vasudev and aunts Rohini and Devaki along with some other members of the royal household. From the very beginning my aunts didn't let me feel the absence my mother.
After the voracious welcome my uncle took me aside to ask about my mother and my brothers. I was given a routine of my daily life in Mathura which was to be followed from a day after my arrival. My aunts offered me a tour of the palace but I was too tired after the travel from Hastinapur and declined it. A dasi who was specifically asked to look after me showed me my rooms in the palace and I hastily changed into a more comfortable clothing and removed the extreme amount of jewellery and jumped on my bed. My body welcomed the warmth and softness of the bed and I fell asleep very quickly. I had a peculiar dream that night.
I saw a young couple a boy and a girl swinging on a swing made of flowers in a beautiful garden. They seemed to have no worries , no care in the world. The boy played a sweet melody in his flute and the girl seemed to lose and find herself in the music. They looked like the epitome of love and beauty and every good thing in the world.
That dream made my mind and soul free and happy and that was the best sleep I got since leaving the forest. The music of the flute stayed with me into the next day but I couldn't remember the dream. Not even a bit of it. Not that day , not for a long time.
