Chapter XXVI: Nightlock

Sophie rolled down the hill, veering to the side and standing up just before she crashed. Ruy rolled off the the other side, his hand automatically going to his pocket. He pulled out a sticky blob of something, and shoved it into Wylie's mouth. After about a minute, he managed to pull it out, but it had given Ruy enough time to masterfully push in a small knife. It was so small that nobody noticed, but it looked extremely painful. And on top of that, he'd made sure it went in his  previous cut.

Wylie crippled as the pain hit, falling to the floor; his trembling fingers attempting the pull it out. Biana reappeared and leaped, pushing Ruy to the floor. In exchange, he trapped Tam in a force field, encouraging Biana to get to off. Sophie mingled her shadows with his force fields, destroying it only to be replaced by another white flashing light. Trying a different tactic, Sophie pulled the darkest shadows she could from above her, and encased his hands with the darker black than she was used to. The force field's flickered and disappeared, with Ruy pulling off the blackness and it slithered away.

Keefe angrily threw a rock at him, attracting his attention. For some reason he didn't defend himself with a force field, instead pulling out a human gun. It was crude by elf standards, but in the arena it was very effective. He fired off a few shots, one of them skimming Sophie's leg, but none hitting. Sophie pulled her knife out, and successfully disarmed him with a clatter, kicking the gun away. At this point, Biana was tending to Wylie's cut, which was unhidable by this point.

Sophie looked at Keefe.

"Ready?"

"Always."

Together they raced towards him, Keefe deterring towards the cornucopia as a diversion, and Sophie pouncing towards Ruy.

She grabbed his wrists and held him to the ground so he couldn't escape, and with trembling fingers pulled out the knife. The one with the glistening handle. She held it to his head, prepared to kill him, but...

She couldn't do it. Keefe took her hands carefully with his warm ones.

"Together," he whispered. Sophie nodded.

"Don't kill me," he begged. "I have a daughter, please!" Sophie ignored him, but it still was hard to push it in. But she still did.

They'd won. Sophie felt pure joy, weighed down by everyone had died, but still she reached for Keefe. He took her into his arms, and a tear slipped down her face.

"You're not supposed to cry when your happy, Foster."

"I don't know what's wrong with me?"

"I do - nothing." He pulled her into a brief kiss, elating her for a moment. Then she heard a rustle from above as someone swung down from the trees.

"Fitz," Biana murmured quietly, filled with an emotion Sophie doubted an empath could decipher.

He nodded, and turned to Sophie, reaching for her hand. She flinched. He pulled away, a pained expression on his face, especially as he saw her and Keefe's intertwined hands. Biana pulled away, tugging Tam's hand.  He smirked, but stayed where he was.

A tear slipped down Sophie's face when she heard the cannon mark Ruy's death. From the feast, she'd wanted information. Ruy and Fintan made sure she didn't get that. Ruy also seemed to know about her and the black swan. And he was gone now. Sophie suddenly decided to research District 13, because she was going to survive. Or not.

"I regret to inform you that our previous addition to the rules has been revoked. Goodnight."

There was silence. Pure silence.

"We all know who's gonna win if it's up to my mum." Sophie nodded. She then bent down, picking up a bit of black mush that had been trampled underfoot. Nightlock. Touches your tongue - 30 mins to live max. Swallow it, a matter of minutes. They had time. Sophie was good with time.

She handed all of them each a berry.

"They have to have their victor. If you trust me, when I say, swallow the berry. Your life might depend on this." Biana hesitated, clearly realising Sophie's plan; she nodded after a minute. "Okay, here we go." Sophie's voice was cracking now, as she put it into her mouth. She heard a voice shouting at them to stop, and everyone else did. It hadn't touched their mouth's. Sophie spat hers out, feeling a darkness sweep over her as she stumbled, falling onto the floor. Then she felt herself fall into the depths of darkness.
