Chapter VI: Cornucopia

Sophie ran towards the cornucopia to fetch as many supplies as she could before it was too late. She could see the others all rushing towards the woods in vague directions; Stina was plunging into the action, grasping to any weapon she could draw to hand. Eventually, her fingers curled around the handle of a knife, thrusting it out towards Sophie. Her eyes widened as she tried to flee, but Stina was too quick; she grabbed her into a headlock and pushed the knife against her throat so that beads of blood appeared.

"Goodbye little Moonlark girl," she crowed, pushing the knife harder as Sophie resister crying out in pain. She instead stored the pain up inside, pooling her anger, pooling her hate, pooling her...

All thoughts were interrupted as a brunette raced in front of her, tackling the girl to the ground. Sophie scrambled to escape from Stina's weak grasp; her hands were bloody, her mind was racing, and Maruca was risking her life to save her. It all happened so fast: one moment Stina was struggling to pull off the girl clinging to her, the next Maruca's head lolled back, her eyes glassy. Dead. The world swam before her eyes as Sophie stumbled away into the forest, her heart beating, her mind racing with what had just happened. Guilt gnawed at her stomach, but Sophie refused to give in to it - that would be what they wanted. She grasped feebly at the backpack she'd managed to grab. It was all she had managed to grab. Inside was rope, some bread, a little bit of water and... That was it, Maruca was dead... For just this! Sophie jumped when the first cannon went off. 'BANG' 'BANG' 'BANG'. Three tributes dead. Now she needed to find the others.

Biana saw it all happen. She vanished at the first opportunity and hid on the sidelines, watching the action. She saw Sophie's face as Stina grabbed her, she saw Maruca tackle her; she saw the knife plunge into her throat. As Sophie ran off, Stina tackled two other tributes who both fell by her hand. Another was severely injured, lasting maybe a day if she was lucky. Even thinking of those gruesome deaths made Biana feel so queasy she nearly missed the action, and part of her wished she had. The next victim was a goblin that Biana recognised as Sandor. The goblin found a throwing-star and aimed it at Stina, hitting her leg; being a drama queen, she immediately began screaming as if she was fatally wounded, which she wasn't, and she was no medic.

The scary part was, Biana was certain the goblin could've ended Stina's life, only he chose not to for some reason, and that reason probably wasn't good. He walked off, leaving the girl whimpering and limping off towards the hills in pain, and Biana wished she felt sorry for her. She waited a few minutes before sneaking towards the cornucopia, using all the stealth training her mum had taught her to get inside. Most of the equipment had been raided though, but there was still some useful stuff. But realistically, all there was was a few bags of food, a knife, a set of throwing stars, and a load of sleeping bags. Useful, but Biana fervently wished Sophie had some better stuff.

Biana jumped when she heard a twig crack from behind her; she whirled around and held out her knife, preparing for a kill, no matter how distasteful. She was being watched and she just knew it. By who, she didn't know. She needed to find the others.

Tam had been scouting for the others, hoping to find them - they'd all run In different directions after the bloodbath at the cornucopia. So far, he'd found the humans, Fitz, Keefe, and Dex. Wylie was untraceable and Biana hadn't been seen; she'd probably vanished considering her ability. Sophie was who knows where, and Linh was missing.

"Look, there's the vanisher," one of the humans whispered to Tam. He replied by making the universal shush symbol, but he did squint harder: she was right. There was a vanisher there, and Biana was the only vanisher in the arena. He stepped forward, freezing when he heard the 'crack' of him stepping on a twig. He unveiled the shadows as Biana whirled around, now visible; she ran forward to hug him, but then stopped midway, realising they weren't alone, blushing heavily.

Sophie was walking, scanning for thoughts when she heard a whisper of one. She scrunched up her forehead as she focused in on it and tried to work out who it was. Maybe it was... Biana? There was only one way to find out. Sophie pulled the shadows around her, checked her enhancing was off, then raced towards it. Closer, closer, and... Ouch! She ran right into Biana; unveiling her shadows as Biana unvarnished.

"Come on, I found the others," she whispered, holding onto her hand as they both disappeared. They reappeared with the others not that long later - the sun had set and by this time, it was dark. The others were settled into their sleeping bags, and Sophie and Biana's were all set up for them in a tree. Sophie wriggled inside the sleeping bag, preparing to go to sleep. Then the anthem began to play.
