(This takes place in the old territory)

Small paws thundered across the ground, scaring away any source of prey available. The apprentice leaped over fallen trees and twisted roots as he made his way through the darkening forest. The bright setting sun cast shadows on the ground as he sped inbetween trees.

He had just become an apprentice the day before, and he wanted to see everything. Including what was described as the kittypet place. He kept running as he thought back to the stories the elders used to tell him.

"Hawkpaw!"

He skidded to a halt and looked behind him. His mentor was quickly padding over, anger written all over her face. "I told you not to run off like that!" She mewed furiously. "You could get seriously hurt, and by the time I'd get there you would already be dead!"

Hawkpaw flattened his ears. He hated being scolded, just like a kit would be. "Sorry, Morningfrost..." He mumbled.

She sighed and shook her head. "Cmon now. You need to lean to defend yourself someday." Morningfrost turned around and padded in the direction of the training hollow, beckoning him with her tail.

Hawkpaw quickened his pace to catch up with her. She had an advantage with her long legs, something he envied. The apprentice was never able to catch up with her if she broke out into a full sprint.

The small sandy hollow came into view, and he smiled eagerly. It looked an orange color, thanks to the bright sun slowly setting behind the trees. It was prettier this way.

The two walked in, and Morningfrost got into a defensive crouch, waiting for him to copy.

Hawkpaw got low to the ground, one paw infront of the other.

"This is what you do if an enemy rears up over you. Now, take your front paw and slash their stomach.Be sure you go downward, not just across their chest."

He smirked as he lashed out with his paw, imagining a big, grey tabby towering over him.

Morningfrost's eyes gleaned with pride as she watched her apprentice. Just one day, and he had already almost mastered his first move with as much ferocity as any other warrior. Well, it was better than yesterday's try.

"I think you're pretty good at that one, how about we try an offense move?" She meowed.

Hawkpaw turned to look and smiled, excitement showing bright in his blue eyes.

"Alright. Copy me." She said, and got into a crouch. It wasn't too hard for him to remake, considering it was almost identical to the last move's crouch.

"Now, when you're ready, attack me."

He narrowed his eyes and bunched up his muscles. The tabby sprung into the air, which was much higher than he ever expected to go.

Hawkpaw came crashing down. Not on top of Morningfrost, but rather right next to her. She smirked and let out a mrow of laughter.

"I'm pretty sure you want to attack the opponent, not become a bird." She said sarcastically.

Hawkpaw just grumbled and put his head into the sand in defeat.

"Come on, let's try it again. We only have so much time before we have to go back to camp.

He stood up and shook his fur free of sand. The apprentice winced as he put weight on one of his front paws. He must've landed on it when he came crashing.

Despite the pain, he crouched down and tried again. This time, he was much lower to the ground, and knew he was going to hit her.

At the last minute, Morningfrost side-stepped and sent him diving into the sand. She smiled and padded orver. "Good tr-"

A strange sound came from deeper in the woods. Both cats were instantly up and alert, ready for anything.

Hawkpaw's ears turned in a direction leading father away from camp. "That sounds like a cat in distress." Morningfrost said, her ears perked.

Morningfrost padded forward a bit, beckoning him to follow. When the screech was heard again, she ran off and left him to catch up. Hawkpaw ran after her, wining that his legs weren't so shots and stub. His mentor slowed down near the edge of the territory, looking for any signs of a cat in need. When they reached the edge of the territory, they spotted a white cat running from a big yellow monster. The monster stopped chasing it after a while and turned around, heading back to whatever Thunderpath it came from.

"Well, he's gone now." Morningfrost declared, looking in the direction of where the cat had ran off.

But Hawkpaw's attention was driven towards something else. A big grey box, just sitting in the middle of the grass. Slowly, he padded away from Morningfrost's side to examine it.

Within a few pawsteps, the great smell of mouse caught his attention, and he sped up his pace with excitement.

He stepped inside of it to find a nice, plump mouse. His eyes lit up as he dug in.

"Hawkpaw, don't!-"

It was too late. He whipped around as the trap sprung close, with him inside.
"Help me!" He screeched, terrified. The apprentice hated small spaces, especially when he couldn't get out of them.

Morningfrost raced over to the cage and started pulling on the lock. How she knew exactly what to do amazed him. "I-I can't get it open, I'll go get help!" She screeched, and dashed back into the forest.

The tabby listened to her thunder away until he could no longer see her through the bars.

He just prayed to all of StarClan that he would get out.
