I Can't Kill Him on an Empty Stomach
"Did you find Wolf?"
"Sort of. We never found her in person. But we were able to track down the cave where the new Midnight Wolves spawn and The King's Remorse poem in its entirety. Ky was able to piece together that there are thirteen constellations that give the Midnight Wolves different powers. He mentioned that Arcane was more powerful than most because he had three of the thirteen constellations, as opposed to one. When we got to the... altar, I guess, all thirteen constellations were glowing, including the thirteenth, Lupus, the wolf. The new Midnight Wolf has incredible power."
Dove pauses for a moment before continuing. "The new Midnight Wolf is Wolf. She didn't disappear onto the other timeline of Ragdon when Arcane shed the Midnight Tear and created a fork in the road of Ragdon's time. She was transported to the cave where the Midnight Wolves spawn. I don't know where she is, but I'm certain she's the new Midnight Wolf."
I don't say anything for a little bit.
"So Wolf's the new Midnight Wolf, has all thirteen of the constellations, has the power of all thirteen, and is somewhere no one knows?"
Dove nods. Didn't see that one coming. I hope Wolf is still the Wolf she was before...
"How are things in the White Tent Sea?"
"Not great. King Garonda XIV has started rebuilding the Sea, and people are beginning to turn to his side. We get treated like his guests. There's this ridiculous buffet for every meal, kids get free toys and treats, the rebuilt tents are so elaborate it's almost sickening. If I didn't know better, I'd almost think he was doing it out of the good of his heart.
"And then there's Luke. I was told by a lead Guard that he was intended to be the ultimate Soldier. He's called the Dust Devil. He seems to be able to control dust and soil, though I don't know what he can do with it. He also seems to hate what he's doing, so I'm not sure what's going on there. King Garonda XIV seems to be getting far more confusing and hard to follow."
"Yeah, definitely," Dove says. "So what exactly happened when you for that wound?" He jerks his head towards my side.
"So the Guard and Soldiers were blocking off various parts of the White Tent Sea and having them gather. And this is what happened when they had Clap and I gather. A Soldier came onto a makeshift stage and told us that it wasn't going to take very long. Then he asked Luke to come onto stage and do his performance. The most striking thing was that Luke didn't seem to want to go onto the stage and looked pretty guilty, as if he already knew what was going to happen and was dreading it. But as soon as purple began to glow beneath the hood of his cloak and dust and soil began to rise from the ground, I pushed Clap into motion and ran. The Guard and Soldiers who followed us asked us to return to see Luke's performance, but I couldn't. There was no way; I'd promised Freedom I was going to keep Clap safe no matter what. Over my dead body would they even lay a finger on her. But even then I'd find a way to hunt them down since I'd've failed Freedom and had to do everything I could to make things right.
"I impaled one, and then Clap killed another. Soon it was just two Soldiers left. I killed the one who gave me this wound. Seneca had to kill the last one since I'd failed to keep Clap safe."
"You didn't fail," Dove says after a few moments. I don't reply.
"You didn't," Dove repeats. "You got Clap away from whatever Luke was doing."
"Hi, Brook!" I turn my head and see Ky pushing his way into the tent.
"Come back, Ky," Phoenix growls. "We agreed Dove would be the one to tell Brook what happened when we tried to find the new Midnight Wolf. As in not us. Get back here."
"I wanted to see how Brook was doing. And I'm gonna bet that Dove's already told Brook about Wolf and how she's the new Midnight Wolf and is suuuuuper powerful cuz she has the power of the twelve constellations that give the Midnight Wolves their power, as well as Lupus. Yeah, she's not reacting. I'm gonna guess she's already well aware of what we found out. So how are you doing, Brook?"
"Yes, Dove already informed me about your findings. And I'm doing much better than I was. Thanks."
"So who are Seneca and Icarus?" Phoenix's eyes glow with simmering anger.
"They're from another dimension of Ragdon," I murmur.
"Another dimension of Ragdon?" Ky's face lights up.
"Yeah."
"Do you think it's got something to do with Midnight Wolves shedding Midnight Tears? Cuz they make a split in time- one for their world, and one for those perceived to be evil."
"Could be..." My voice trails off. "I will admit I hadn't given the how too much thought."
"How'd they get here?" Phoenix snarls. "What's their goal here?"
"A little over a month ago, the two dozen or so people who disappeared when Arcane shed the Midnight Tear showed up in Seneca and Icarus's dimension. They then tried to figure out where they came from and wound up here."
"Cool, but what are they doing here?"
"They were trying to figure out where the two dozen or so people came from," I repeat.
"Yeah, got it. But what are they doing here?" Phoenix begins to bristle.
"What we're doing is helping defeat King Garonda XIV. We came to see where the two dozen, or however many there are, people came from. We then found out that a certain self-named King of Ragdon was under the control of the Amethyst Throne. We'd already destroyed the Amethyst Throne in our dimension. At the cost of all magic-users except ourselves, but we destroyed it. We want to help destroy the Amethyst Throne in yours, but without the cost."
"I'm calling BS. No one's that selfless. What do you want?" Phoenix glares at Seneca and Icarus.
"What do we want?" Icarus frowns.
"Yeah. What do you want? What do you get out of this?"
"We get to prevent people from having to witness the carnage that the Amethyst Throne can wreak."
Phoenix narrows his eyes as he ponders what Icarus had said.
"Still BS. No one's that selfless. You could just go back home and never look back. Voila. You'll live happily ever after and you'll forget we even existed."
"Our parents and newborn sister were burned alive by KG14 and his Guard and Soldiers," Ky says when Seneca and Icarus pause to look at Phoenix. His voice is relatively flat, but there's a hint of tightness that gives away his anger.
"What the hell?" Seneca curls her lip in horror. Icarus mirrors her shocked expression.
"I was too weak to stop the flames then. I could do nothing to stop the fire. I thought I was strong, but when it came down to it, I was too weak, too powerless, too helpless to save my family. I lost everything but Ky that day. But I'm far, far stronger now. If KG14 ever tries anything like that again he won't get far at all. I'll turn the flames right back at him and burn everything he's ever loved, well, his twisted equivalent of love, to the ground. And then, once he's lost everything, I'll kill him. But not a quick death; that's far too merciful. He needs to feel even just a fraction of what he's done to me- that would be true suffering. He needs to beg for the release of death. Be down on his knees, surrender, and beg. Beg like a dog. He'll feel what it's like to truly suffer. Only when his heart no longer has the streng-."
"It's ok, Phoenix," Ky murmurs, leaning his shoulder against his brother's side. "KG14's going to suffer. He's not going to get away with a quick, painless death."
"No, he's not." Phoenix's fiery eyes glow with rage and seething anger. Flames crackle across his body.
And I thought I was angry at King Garonda XIV.
"So...," Seneca starts. "We all want this... King of Ragdon dead?"
"Yes," Ky says quickly, before Phoenix has the chance to speak. He leans his shoulder into Phoenix's to keep his brother quiet.
"Could you tell us more about what's going on in the White Tent Sea over lunch. Is it lunch?" Dove pulls back one of the flaps of the tent to see where the sun is in the sky.
"Yeah, it is," Icarus murmurs.
"Need help getting to your feet, Brook?" Seneca asks, turning her head toward me.
"I don't think so," I reply. I uncurl my forelegs and push myself to my feet, grimacing at the spark of pain that flashes across my side. My legs quiver, and I rock like a newborn foal, but I manage to stay upright as I regain my balance.
Miles returns with Clap in tow. She proudly struts behind him, carrying a roll of bandages in a little cloth bag in her mouth. Her chest is puffed out as she holds her head high.
"Look at you, Clap," I say once she reaches me. She drops the bag to the ground.
"B-Brook, look a-a-at all the s-stuff I-I carried! It's a lot!" Clap's eyes glow with excitement.
"Indeed it is." I smile.
"I'm going to get something to eat. Come if you want. Or not, I don't really care. I'm bored here and I've got a King to kill, and I can't kill him on an empty stomach. Can't make his death as long as I possibly can, can't make him beg for mercy that will never come, can't make him watch as his world burns." Phoenix's claws curl into the ground before he turns around and walks away, tip of his tail flicking.
"See ya later, guys. I'm hungry too." Ky bounds to catch up with his brother. The red bandana around his neck falls to one side.
We make our way to the Earth Tree a few minutes later. Most have already eaten, so there's almost no line to get food. Ky and Phoenix are off to the side, with a huge chunk of meat laying between them. They eat as if it were their last meal, barely chewing and tearing off mouthful after mouthful with blood soaking into their muzzles and running down their chins and necks. But neither seems to care.
"What do you want, Brook? Wait here, I'll bring it to you. Miles said to rest," Dove says.
"I don't really care. Whatever's easiest."
"Alright."
Phoenix curls his lip when I make my way over. Ky bats him across the side of the face, keeping his claws sheathed. "That's Brook, you dumbo! Chill," Ky says.
"Don't call me a dumbo," Phoenix snarls.
"Relax, Phoenix. I'm not going to steal your food. I just wanted to say hello."
"Hm," Phoenix grumbles.
"Hey, what's that up there?" Dove walks over, a plate heaping with food in one hand. The other points up at the sky. I look up. A red creature flies overhead, one that looks vaguely familiar. From where?
Thank you for reading! If you enjoyed this chapter, please consider a vote and comment your thoughts! I'd love to hear them
We're slowly but surely making our way to the end of Relearn! It's crazy to think soon I'll be writing the last section of The King's Remorse...
What is the red creature Dove has noticed? Why does Brook recognize it?
Phoenix has his heart set on giving King Garonda XIV the longest death possible. Will he be successful?
Wolf's missing... That can't be good, right?
Wolf's the new Midnight Wolf... What exactly do her new powers entail?
Will Wolf show up again? The group might need her if they are to defeat the Amethyst Throne; Seneca and Icarus said the Amethyst Throne would put up a huge fight when someone tried to destroy it.
So many questions, but they'll be answered as the story progresses.
I hope you are doing well!
