Excerpt - Agustin

The house plunged into darkness. Then, bright red and blue lights flashed from all corners of the mansion. The vibrations from the helicopter landing on the roof and the constant whipping of air felt rhythmic to my steps.

"You're surrounded from all sides." The static, sharp voice from the loudspeaker boomed inside the house. "We've sealed all escape routes."

I was focusing on crawling. I had to reach her.

The shimmering lights from the police cars guided my path.

"You have one minute to come outside. Then we will come inside." Static. "Do not attempt anything stupid."

"Of course, not," I said to myself. "Stupidity will be to listen to you."

The length from the hall to the kitchen was barely a minute. Crawling on the cold marble felt like ages.

The red-stained flood made my move difficult.

Someone groaned in a corner. "Help me."

I knew who it was.

But I had to help her.

I needed to help her.

"Come on..." I pushed my booth harder against the blood-soaked carper, my elbows dragging me ahead. "Commmeeee onnnnn..."

"Agustin..." I heard her. My legs froze. My breath halted. "Leave now."

She was injured. Her raspy breath confirmed.

Blood pooled at the entrance of the kitchen.

"NOW..." Someone yelled.

The loud boom.

My ears rang.

My eye saw ash.

My chest burnt.

"Mi Vida, esperar." *Hold on, my Life.*
