Chapter Twenty-Two

Chapter Twenty-Two

And when the daylight comes, I'll have to go

But tonight I'm holding you so close

"Are you sure you're alright?" Mum asked for what felt like the millionth time already. We were walking into the hospital at this point in time and I was really just wanting to get this over with. I was tired, I was upset and I just wanted to go home.

"I'm fine." I said, really stressing it this time even though I didn't feel fine. I wasn't going to bother Mum with my problems. Mum didn't get the chance to ask again as we walked into the waiting room.

"Alex? What are you doing here?" A familiar voice asked, and I looked towards the direction to see Laci sitting next to her husband Will. She smiled and waved at us before standing up to give me a hug.

"I'm just here for an appointment, what about you?" I asked her, even though it was a little more than obvious why she was here. It wasn't hard to miss the round stomach or the fact she held her hands underneath it supportively.

"Well we just finished up our appointment, were actually just heading back to see my grandpa before we head out. He's been pretty busy today though." She shrugged before smiling again. Will stood behind her, a hand on her shoulder as he smiled at me as well.

"We're actually heading to go see him..." Mum said, smiling as well at both Laci and Will. Laci's eyebrows scrunched together as she looked at the two of us with a confused expression.

"Are you pregnant again Uncle Niall?" She asked, still looking confused as ever after Mum let out a laugh. Mum shook his head, still laughing a little as Laci failed to get what was going on.

"I'm pregnant." I said quietly, my eyes casting towards the ground as I bit my bottom lip. I decided right then that I was never going to get used to telling people... Hell I was still getting used to the fact that there was a living human being growing inside me.

"Oh... Well I guess congratulations are in order then?" Laci asked, her voice a little timid as she tried to gauge my reaction. I just gave her a tight smile, honestly not knowing what to say. Luckily by that point I was called back, so Mum and I exchanged a quick goodbye and we walked down the corridor. A nurse weighed me, took my blood pressure, and then took us to a small room where we waited for Doctor Caplow, or as he liked to be called Grandpa Jack. He came in with a bright smile, sitting down in the chair in front of me after walking in.

"Well if it isn't my favorite family. How are you Alex?" Jack asked, patting my knee as I shifted uncomfortably on the hospital bed.

"I'm okay." I said, smiling a little even if it was forced.

"That's good to hear. Now I know how much you hate being here, so how about we get this show on the road." And then I actually smiled. Jack was a nice guy and really was like a grandpa to me. He returned my smile before flipping on a machine next to him. In just a few minutes we were all looking at a somewhat blurry image of what was supposed to be a baby. I couldn't really see it until Jack pointed out where it's head was supposed to be and where it's feet were.

"How far along did they say you were last time?" Jack asked, clicking his tongue as he looked at the screen.

"Around six weeks, give or take a day. That was about three weeks ago though." I said quietly, looking down at my flat stomach. It was really hard to believe that what was on the screen was really inside of me.

It seemed almost impossible.

"Well I think it's safe to say they were spot on this time. That's a first with this family. I remember your mum's first appointment with you, he told me he was around four weeks and it turned out he was actually eight..." And Jack carries on with his story about Mum, but I tune him out. My gaze is once again focused on the screen, still trying to figure out if this was really what was inside of me.

It was hard to believe that it was a baby and not some weird alien that had decided to take root there.

But it was definitely a baby... it was my baby.... mine and Olivers.

Our little bear.

"Would you like some print outs kid?" Jack suddenly asked, bringing me back to earth. I nodded quickly, frowning when I noticed he had turned off the screen. He left at that point, leaving Mum and I alone for just a brief moment or two.

"Are you alright?" Mum asks, but I wasn't annoyed.

"Yeah... Just a lot to take in right now." I whisper, this time being honest. After Jack brought back the sonograms, Mum and I left. We said goodbye to Will and Laci as we did, Mum invited them to dinner sometime this week. We got home about an hour later, the house a little quieter than it normally was. Dad was sitting in the living room when we got home but he wasn't alone.

In front of him sat Oliver, a bag of frozen peas covering just below his left eye.

"Hey Alex..."
