Wildlife - Task Three

I sighed. Today was an interview with the Keeper Kate. I had an idea that would let me talk, but it wouldn't be me talking. Wally gave me the idea. I didn't wear anything fancy. Just my usual grey converse, sweatpants and a white t-shirt with a grey sweatshirt. I put my hair in its usual ponytail and left my room. Macy followed me, happy to get out of the room.

I walked to her office and saw another apprentice leave. I knocked on her door.

"Come in."

I turned the doorknob and walked into her office. She gave me a bright smile. I rolled my eyes. Of course she would be smiling. It's all about being positive! (Please note the sarcasm)

I sat down in the chair in front of her. Macy laid at my feet.
"So I have some questions for you."

I rolled my eyes again. No shiz Sherlock. I sighed wanting to be anywhere but here. Kate looked at me. She was probably expecting me to answer. I looked at her and raised my eyebrow.

She cleared her throat. "Right, Wally to.d me you don't talk to people." She smiled again. "So, how do you feel about being an apprentice in the Keeper Exams?"

I took out my phone and typed in my answer. "Like a piece of crap." Said my phone. The voice was monotone and robotic.

Kate raised her eyebrows. "Would you like to elaborate?"

I typed in my answer. "Ha, no."

Kate sighed. "Okay, onto the next question. Do you think you have what it takes to be the keeper?"

"No." Secretly I was enjoying this. I was pissing her off. And I love pissing people off sometimes. This just happened to be one of those times.

"What is your greatest strength and weakness?"

"Macy is both." The robotic voice said.

"Macy?" Kate looked at me with a shocked expression. Probably because I didn't say yes or no.

"My dog. And that's all I'm saying."

"Next question, How far are you willing to become keeper?"

"Who said I wanted to become keeper? I don't want to do this. I came willingly because  I would've been forced to come any way."

Kate looked at me. Her eyes were full of empathy. She looked away and continued. "On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your abilities when controlling your gift?"

"Probably a seven or eight. I still have more to learn." I sighed, and tucked my feet into my chair. I was so bored. Macy looked up at me and jumped into my lap. She put her head on my shoulder and closed her eyes.

"This next question is important and I would like you elaborate more on it." I moaned mentally. I already opened up to her about a lot. What more could she possibly want?

"Do you feel cheated for not getting to train as a child?"

I snorted. I typed my answer. "Ha, no. My parents never told me I had the possibility of being a hybrid. So I didn't know. But at least I got to live like a normal person for most of my life."

She looked at me. "Hm, interesting." She scribbled on the paper. My eyes widened slightly. She's writing my answers down? I thought this was a little heart to heart. I sighed for like the one hundredth time I walked in this room.

It's not like she's the first one to break my trust, I thought glumly.

"Do you feel like you are prepared for the Exams after all of the training you've had in the facilities and with our trainers?"

"Eh. If it helps me stay alive for the first two parts of the Exams then I'm good." I could tell the monotone robotic voice was kind of irritating Kate. I chuckled a little. Macy licked my face. I glared at her. Stupid dog. Macy whined and looked at me. I shoved her face out of my face.

Kate was watching us with a slight smile to her face. "So, you being a Wildlife, is Macy the animal that you bonded with?"

"Noooo, she's not. She's my sister." Sarcasm didn't really work with the monotone voice. But in my case it was hysterical. I had to hold my nose and bite my lip from laughing.

Kate sighed. "Your a bit worse then a teenage boy."

I nodded and typed, "Yeah I get that a lot."

"Okay, so I only have a few more questions left." Thank goodness. I'm pretty sure Macy was really bored. "Does the chance to become Keeper, or part of the Guarde excite or terrify you?"

"If I'm Keeper, well that would suck. I wouldn't want the responsibility." Kate nodded as if she understood. Then I added, "And I'd have to deal with people like me. Not fun."

Kate chuckled a little. "What would be your first order of Keeper?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. Probably go and order everyone pizza." Kate looked at me.

"You don't take this seriously do you?" She asked.

"Nope. Just trying to make the best of it ma'm." I managed to have my phone say it in a southern accent, and to top it all off I tipped an imaginary cowboy hat.

Kate muttered something, probably had a lot of profanity. I smirked slightly.

"Last question. What qualities do you think it takes to be keeper?"

I shrugged. "Simple. Anyone that's not me." I looked at her. "Are we done now?"

Kate sighed, "Yes. We are. Thank you for your time." I waved as I turned around and shut the door

I petted my pet wolf. He was a young adult, about sixteen. He had night black fur with cocoa brown streaks. He whimpered, having to stay in my room. I was, hours ago, sparring with Cole and Samuel. Someone knocked on my rose red door. "Come in." I said. "Kate wants to see you, Mr Miles." It was Thomas. "I will be there, soon." I said to him. He nodded and left. I pulled off my burnt clothes and pulled on a comfortable shirt and jeans. I combed my blond hair before pulling a slab of meat out of a bag and dropping it into the dish filled with wolf slobber and bits of food stuck to the bowl. I walked up a flight of stairs before reaching her office. Gold writing said-Kate, Hybrid Keeper. I knocked politely on the door and the door was opened to Kate. She smiled and moved out of the way to let me in. We sit on velvet chairs and Kate asks me how I feel about being in the Exams. I exhale before responding, "I feel that I will make far into the Exams, but I am not sure I will live to the Keeper, to be honest, ma'am." "Please, call me Kate." she says smiling with her rosy cheeks. "What is your greatest weakness? Strengths?" "Well, I am afraid of losing who I am as an individual person, would you agree? My strengths could be taming animals and making them my pets, like my wolf." "You won't get to take your wolf in but he will be here for you, whether you end up dead or alive." "I would like to take the Keeper job farther by expanding our facilities and maybe discover more Gifts..." I said to her. She thought and smiled, "That could be possible." "How would you rate your powers?" "6?" I said. "I wished I could have spent more time practicing but I failed at fighting too many times so I'm not sure if I could make it." "Whether I'm the Keeper or part of the Guarde, I just want to have what I am as a person. Keepers would be difficult and hard working." I covered my eyes as tears threatened to burst. Kate put her fingers around my chin and pulled off my hands. She too had tears in her eyes. She said, "Do what you are as yourself. There is no rights and wrongs." "Thank you." I murmured before getting up and leaving. I wandered through the halls back to my room, when I saw someone, Samuel, slipping into a room with a unlabeled door. My eyes squinted. What is he doing?

"Maris?" There was a knock at the door and I say up rubbing my eyes.
"Yah?" I yawned this place was exhausting.
Training every hour of the day.
I suppose it helps though.
"Can I come in?"
"Sure," Drake walked in and set a small bundle of star-grapes on the desk.
"Get up, you have a meeting with the Hybrid Keeper," I sat up quickly.
"What?"
"A meeting get dressed." Drake tossed a pair of pants and a shirt at me and pointed at my boots. "Hurry up." He left and I jumped out of bed scrambling to put the clothes on.
The Hybrid Keeper wants to meet?
Why?
Did she realize the magic made a mistake and she'll let me go? What about Andreana. Can't leave the chick on her own, even though I'm pretty sure she can handle herself.
I ran out and Drake immediately started walking down the hallway, an unfamiliar one at that."
"Drake where are we going."
"To the keeper, she has some questions that's all." We walked in silence for a bit longer and then Drake knocked on a wooden door, strange for an underground campus.
"Send her in."
"Have fun," Drake pushed open the door and gave me a light shove in. I stumbled in and looked around.
"Hello," I looked across the room and saw a young looking woman resting on a couch. It was that lady Kate, the one who brought us here.
I wanted to lunge at her.
Demand she let me go.
"Please sit," she said pleasantly. I sat down on a chair opposite her and kept my gaze focused on the ground. "So how do you feel, being an apprentice here?" She asked.
"I feel like a prisoner," I answered without thinking. "I mean-"
"I understand what you mean," she wrote something down a pad of paper I hadn't seen before and I crossed my arms. "Do you feel cheated?"
"Cheated?"
"Majority of the youth here have known they are hybrids for a long time, trained since birth. Do you feel cheated knowing you have such little time to train?"
"Not really," I shrugged. "Why should I? I learn fast and I know how to survive. That's all you need."
Kate have a small grin and then it dropped. "What do you think your strengths and weaknesses are Mrs. Gold."
"My name is Maris and I've taken down men with biceps bigger than most of these people egos," I said crossing my arms.
"But your weaknesses?"
I looked up and looked her right in the eyes. "I don't think I can do this."
"Why not?"
I stood up and stretched. "I am killer that much I know. I've killed a lot of people, lead assassin of the Black Dragons you know. But the people I've killed were never my friends, my allies. I've already become an ally with Andreana, what if we are the two that make it to the end and we have to kill each other. I couldn't do it. If I made friends with anyone else down here, I might now be able to plunge a knife into their chest or pull the trigger."
"How far are you willing to go to be a keeper Maris?"
Her questions were interesting.
"As far as I need to go. My weakness is just another obstacle, a temporary block." My heart burned and I rubbed it carefully. The scars around it had still not fully healed. Probably because I have been straining myself.
"Do you think you have what it takes to be a keeper?" Kate asked.
"Do any of us?"
She sat up straighter and raised an eyebrow.
"Speaking of why am I down here?" I asked. "Killer remember. Why should someone like me be leader. Andreana? What about that dude Noah, I heard he tortured people for fun."
"Andreana knows how to operate in the darkness, in the shadows. Hybrids are meant to stay hidden, for now. Noah would a cruel leader, but he would squash any rebellion with the blink of an eye. You, Maris have heart. I can see it in you. If you become a keeper I can you see being a kind and just one, protecting your friends and allies. On a scale on one to ten how would you rate your abilities?"
I looked at her but answered. "8. I'm still having some issues with flying and changing back before over exhausting myself."
"Do you feel after training so much with Drake that you can handle yourself in the exams?"
"Yah I'd say so."
"What do you think the qualities of a keeper are?"
"What's with all the questions?"
"Please answer."
"Fine you have to be kind, just, but willing to rule with an iron fist. You have to be assertive and be able talk to I dunno the people you command. I shrugged. "Is that good enough."
"Yes it's fine," Kate finished writing and gestured at the door. "You can leave now."
"Hey woah no-"
"I shall see you again Maris," Kate said. "But I shall see you later."
I walked out and the door closed behind me.
"How was your meeting?" Drake asked.
I looked back at the door. "Weird," I looked at him. "But isn't this all?"
