Mind - Task Two

The room was silent, save for the rhythmic tapping of my fingers against the stainless steel desk. Rubber edges, of course, so we couldn't hurt ourselves on it. They really thought of everything here.

It's been two days since I've arrived. I haven't eaten anything, not have I left my room. I suppose the others are out training, or something. I couldn't bring myself to join them. Morbid thoughts flooded my head, thinking about everything the girl- Kate?- had said. About the games. About my power.

There were two others here could do the same thing I could. Dakota and Hazel de something or other. I don't remember all the names. All the other kids could do other things, like control the elements, or turn into animals. I don't remember all the powers, there were too many to remember.

After another couple minutes of staring at the blank walls, I decided I ought to try training. After all, if I was stuck here, i might as well try and win this thing. I pushed the chair away from my desk, walking over to the steel door. It was unlocked, although I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised. They wanted us to train.

The hall was made of blank, crumbling concrete. A loud slam alerted me the floor was closed, but I whirled around all the same. My breath was taken away by my image. My stomach was tiny- every rib visible under my thin shirt. I was wearing a blue top, thin to my tiny frame, with an open back, a small piece twisted at the top of my shoulder blades. I wore simple black leggings, like always, and still kept the rain boots, even though I had been given ruined converse.

My shoes made a satisfied thunk as I thundered down the hall. I had no idea where to go, but luckily I didn't have to think so hard, for before I had time to even wonder where I was going, I was stopped in front of a pair of heavy metal doors. I pushed them open, slightly surprised that it was a simple, bland gymnasium. In the middle was a small ring, with some other kids walking around it. Two girls stepped off the ring, glancing at the room for a second before smiling at each other, and saying something u couldn't hear. One walked off toward something else, while the other sat at the edge of the ring. I decided to ask about fighting. Maybe she could help me out a little.

" Uh, hey-" I started, the girl glancing up suddenly. " I'm Ripley. I was wondering if you wanted to- uh-" I wasn't sure what to say. Fight? Train?

" Oh! I'm Alice. Do you want to fight? I can show you how it works!" She chirped, leaping to her feet.

" How what works?" I asked, following her onto the ring.

" The simulation! Where do you want to fight?"

" Uh, I don't know." I glanced around the room, still unsure what she meant.

" We should use something that's good for your gift! I have mortality, meaning I can raise the dead, and heal and such."

" Oh. I have mind powers, or something. I can alter, erase, and add false memories." I replied, unsure where that would come in useful.

" What if we do something like-" she paused, thinking for a moment. " Ehat about a ruined city?"

" That would be cool," I agreed, and suddenly, the bland gym disappeared. I looked around, taken off guard by the sudden change of scenery. Alice walked back over to me a moment later, a big grin on her face, as she looked around at the scene. The sky was a cloudy gray, and all around us were crumbling concrete and torn up streets. The buildings were falling apart, and a loud thunk startled us both, as we whipped around to see what it was. A building had collapsed, concrete making deep dents in the street.

" Ready to fight?" Asked Alice, pulling my attention from the ruined city block. I nodded, still unsure what I would do to fight this girl. " Great," she responded, shifting her weight evenly between her feet. Without a moment of hesitation, the ground beneath me began to rumble, the ruined buildings shaking uncontrollably. A hand grabbed the earth, breaking from the cracking concrete, followed by dozens more. Ruined humans, with rotting flesh falling from their bones, tattered clothes hanging off their thin bodies, began to emerge, climbing from the ground, the buildings. I did my best not to scream in pure fear. Instead, u reached out, and felt the openness of her mind. A comforting feeling, unlike with Thomas, or the ones that bring the food into my cell here. No block, nothing in between me and this open, inviting brain. I reached out, for a painful memory, and as my mind touched one, I began to pull.

Alice doubled over, the undead humans crumbling to the ground in an instant, as the girl let out a piercing scream, grabbing at her neck. Unsure what I had done, I stumbled Barack, quite surprised by the outcome. The memory slipped from my grasp, cutting off the scream, and leaving the girl in front of me with tears streaming down her face, eyes hollowed out as though she has aged a thousand years. She looked at me, horrified, before a murderous grin spread across her face. She grabbed my hand, tightening her hold on it, and something spread through me. I could feel my insides churning, as my skin turned a ghastly white, and I doubled over, my knees slamming into the floor. I was dizzy, the world around me spinning, as my body became weaker. Death seemed so inviting here, from whatever torture was quickly taking me over-

No. I wasn't about to give up. Once again, I reached into her memory, and quickly brought to mind the most painful thing possible, and threw it into her mind. She only had time to gasp, stumbling backwards blindly and swinging at an invisible attacker. The pain from my own body subsided, and I  pushed on, touching painful memories, and happy ones- nightmare after nightmare flooded through her brain, as I pushed them on, and she screamed, louder and louder. I grinned, glad to know what I was doing worked.

And then she was holding me again, gripping my hand with an iron grip. My body began to feel weak like before, my inside churning with pain, my ski turning thinner, my head residing into pain, like someone slicing my skull open. I coughed, blood staining the broken concrete, as I slowly began to collapse, dark spots dancing through my vision. My skin felt cold, and the pain turned numb, as complete darkness took over the world outside..

Then I was back in the bland gymnasium, the pain having disappeared, my body warm again, with a small hand in my chest. My eyes opened completely to see Alice kneeling over me, her hand touching my chest lightly. I still felt light headed, and trying to sit up resulted in a rush of blood from my head, and ultimately me laying back down.

" You okay?" Asked Alice timidly. I nodded, and she seemed to be satisfied with this. " You were pretty good. If you. Haven't figured it out, my powers mean I can inflict sicknesses with touch, and raise the dead and such. I can also heal with touch, but that's not very useful for fighting." She chuckled slightly at this.

" I can create memories, and change memories- and erase them. I made up some pain inflicting ones, so your brain thought you were in pain, even when your weren't. And I just pulled up the most painful of your memories-" I stopped, realizing she probably didn't want me bringing this up. Slowly, in the awkward silence between us now, I sat up.

" Hey Ripley?" She asked finally, breaking the silence.

" Yeah?"

" Wanna be allies?" A small smile spread across my face.

" Id love to be allies with you."

Name: Dakota Bennett

Dakota curled into a ball in her bed. They had brought her here-barely explaining anything- only to have some woman tell them they were in a competition. Where they would have to fight to the death.
She didn't want to be here.
She wanted to be at home with Faith. She didn't even know what happened to Faith...they didn't give her a chance to find out. And what about her friends? They would wonder where she was. And if she didn't manage to win this stupid thing then she would be...what? Resurrected? They would bring her back from the dead?
This was all so stupid. And it wasn't real.
It couldn't be. Things like this didn't just happen in real life. But...Dakota sat up. She couldn't just stay in her room denying everything that had happened. She'd never get anywhere that way. She carefully put a foot out of her bed and walked around her room.
She could do this.
Ignoring the fact that she was makeupless, in pajamas, and had terrible bed hair, she walked out of her room and down to the training room. She had heard that there were fourteen training grounds, but she had only memorized where one was.
She could do this.
