Mind - Task One

Name: Dakota Bennett

Three girls sat outside, listening to music and tanning in the sun.
“Ohmygosh Kota, Dylan totally has a crush on you.”
Dakota Bennett laughed, shaking her long blonde hair and pulling it into a ponytail. “Shut up Sarah. He does not.”
“Yes he does! Like every boy in our school is head over heels in love with you.”
Dakota smiled and leaned back into her lounge chair. She didn't deny it. She knew they all liked her, and she worked hard to make it so. She was a queen at Ellepath High and that was never going to change.
But then her phone rang.
As always, she grabbed it before it had the chance to ring a second time.
“Hello?”
“Hey Dakota.”
“Faith? I thought you were at that ballet with mom.”
“I'm tired, Kota. I'm just so tired.”
“What? Faith, what's going on?”
“Look up.”
And she did. Dakota's blue eyes went straight up, staring at the roof of their four story mansion. And, standing at the very edge, was a tiny figure with long dark hair hiding her face. But Dakota recognized her baby sister immediately.
“Faith!”
“Come on up. I'll be waiting.”
Seconds later Faith's phone crashed at Dakota's feet and all of her friends screamed. Dakota didn't take the time to scream- she was already running into her house and up the stairs. She ran into her room and climbed out of the window.  Soon enough she was standing behind Faith.
Faith wasn't like Dakota. She wore baggy clothes and she sat in the back of her class. She never talked. She never made a sound. She didn't crave attention like Dakota. She was different and people took notice of that.
“Come here Kody. Come stand next to me.”
Dakota moved slowly, not making a sound. You could say what you wanted about Dakota Bennett, but she loved her family.
“Faith? What are you doing?”
 “I'm going to jump.”
“Oh Faith...please just take a few steps back. Everything will be okay. Just take a few steps back.”
“No Dakota. Nothing will be okay. Not anymore. Come hold my hand.”
Dakota did as she was told and slowly made her way towards her sister. She grabbed her tiny, pale hand and held on tightly. “Let's just go Faith.” She could see her friends looking up at them with wide, scared eyes. But she ignored them, focusing on Faith.
“No!” her hand tightened around Dakota's until it hurt, “No! We're gonna do this together.”
 “What? Faith I don't understand.”
“I don't want to go without you. So we're going to jump. Together.”
Dakota tried to pull back but, despite being so small, Faith was much stronger. Her other arm wrapped around Dakota's body and held on tight. “On the count of three.”
“Faith!”
“One.”
“Stop it Faith!”
“Two.”
“No!”
“Thr- what's happening? Dakota! Kota I can't see! I can't see anything!”
Dakota let out the breath of air she had been holding. She didn't know what she had done. She didn't know what was going on. All she knew was her sister just tried to commit a suicide murder and someone Dakota had stopped her.
Faith's grip on Dakota loosened and Dakota took a step back. She wrapped her arms around her sister's waist and pulled her off of the roof. She sat her down on her bed and locked her window. She looked at her sister and darted down the stairs. Running right into someone.
She looked up and her eyes met those of a boy's. Well, she couldn't really say boy. He had to be at least nineteen. She took a step back, preparing to run past him. Or scream and catch her friend's attention. But he stopped her.
“Wait! I'm Thomas I-I know what you can do. I know what you just did to your sister. I can help you. Just wait.”

Name: Ripley Korina Alician

"Ripley, I'm taking your mother to the doctor, don't burn down the house while I'm out!" What did he think me to be, stupid? I spend most my life at home alone, and our house hasn't once burned down. I suppose it's just an expression though. Not to be taken literally.

My mother went to the doctor everyday, for her medications check up. They don't really know what's the matter with her, so they just give her medications, and hope it works. Not the most scientific form of treatment.

I could hear the whirring of the car pull away, and looked up from my book, watching the blue Honda pull out f sight. As soon as it was down the block, my book was on the floor, and I was outside without a moment to lose. My dad thought it was dangerous for me to explore the tunnels under the town, which is why I only did it when he was out. Which, fortunately, was often. I had mapped out half the town, through the dark and damp labyrinth down here. They were only populated by at least a million spiders, which didn't faze me. Just as long as I didn't look at them. The skittering across the walls did seem to put an unsettling feeling over the whole area, however, but I had gotten pretty good at ignoring it. Down here, it was just my flashlight, my map, and me. Isn't much else I'd need.

It had rained the other day, i suppose, since I was ankle deep in some sort of liquid. I hope it was water, but the black knee-high rain boots seemed to keep it out. I wore my usually outfit, a pair of black leggings, fitting to my small frame, and a loose tee shirt, with a artsy flower design on it. My blond hair fell over my shoulders in a bit of a mess, but it went well with the black eyeliner I always wore. My clothes don't matter much down here, since it's almost pitch black. And no one but spiders ever see me.

As I turned another corner, the rain water sloshing as I moved, I heard something else. Not the usually scampering of spiders, or the groaning of the old pipes running through the tunnels.
This was a rumble. Them a breaking sound. And then a splash. Wildly, my only beam of light swung around, looking for anything worrying, but only came across the old concrete tunnels surrounding me. Hoping it wasn't anything too worrying, I continued on. But I heard it again, this time accompanied by a shaking. An earthquake? Was I about to die? Thoughts of my mother flashed through my head. What would happen to her if I died? She was already on the verge of insanity- would my death make her go completely off her mind? I didn't have time to ponder that, for a moment later, there was another shaking, and a loud splash behind me, small droplets hitting the back of my legs. I started to run, not thinking of anything, just wanting to live. The water turned to dry concrete, but the shaking continued. The ground below me cracks, becoming unsteady, and a sudden jerk throws me into the wall. The roof behind me collapses into the floor, sending me scrambling across the ground like a blind mouse, running from a cat. My flashlight is gone, plunging me into complete darkness now. I'm going to die down here, and no one will ever find me. There'll be posters all over town, and no one will ever call. There's another shaking, and something collides with me, my vision disappearing entirely, pain flaring all over my body. That's it, I must be dead. There's no way I can survive this-

" Is she alive?" It was a low gravelly voice, though I couldn't figure out what direction it was coming from.

" No idea," said a second voice, softer than the first. Both male, that was all I could tell. I blinked, partially surprised that I was able to move. Light flooded through my vision, much brighter than I had for the last hours in those tunnels. Two faces were staring over at me, one with a scraggly beard and dark brown hair, with intense brown eyes staring right at me. The second had a softer complexion, with no visible hair, but a police cap balanced on his head. His blue eyes were softer, but at the sight of my open eyes, a sense of firmness took his. " You okay, little girl?" He asked, as a firm hand lifted me into a sitting position. I was in too much shock to answer.

" There doesn't seem too bad, besides some scratches and bruises." Said the man with the beard, looking me over.

" Little girl, what were you doing in the tunnels?" Asked the police man, getting straight to the point. "It's illegal to be in those tunnels, unless on city business." Illegal? I almost died, and now I was going to be put in jail?!

" I- I wasn't in the tunnels," I knew it was useless, because they had just rescued me from there. However, something seemed to click in my mind, and both men drew blank faces, blinking down at me.

" Darling, are you okay? What happened?" Asked the man with the beard again. Didn't he just ask that?

" Little girl, where are your parents?" Added the police man. Did they not know they had just rescued me from the tunnels? What was happening here!? I scrambled to my feet, both men jumping up after me, and began to run. Whatever this was, I didn't like it one bit. Maybe I was going insane, like my mother-

" Hey!" I ran straight into someone, a boy by the looks of it, stumbling back into my heels. Before I had a chance to apologize, he grabbed my elbow, and took off running.

" Stop!" I screamed, trying to pull free. He didn't stop, or let his grip down at all. We ducked into an alley, where he pushed me against a wall. I was sure he was gonna shake me down for all my money. Wonderful. What a wonderful day I was having. I took a breath, ready to try the same thing I had done to he two men back there. Maybe it would save me again. But where I should've felt a click, I felt a cold wall.

" Don't try it," said the boy with a chuckle, releasing me from the wall. He had a charming smile, like a normal teen. But there was something off about him. " I'm Thomas. Don't try any tricks, and this can be as painless as possible for the both of us, okay?" I nodded, unsure what else to do. " Now come on Ripley. I've got a lot to explain to you."

Name: Hazel de Nile

My body screamed with pain, I looked up at the sky, it seemed so bright.

"Your time is up."snapped my mother

All at once the pain stopped, I breathed heavily. I looked at my scorched body, she came over and touched me. Instantly the skin cleared.

"Any minute and you'd been dead, if this was the real deal you wouldn't have survived."she sneered,"Breather and we go again."

I scowled darkly at her, she had been so disappointed with me when she found out I had the gift if mind, she'd had been hoping for an elemental or a protection. I closed my eyes, it was like the day was happening again.

*flashback*

"Okay darling,do you trust me?"asked my mother smiling

We were sitting by a waterfall, the water was loud and thundered. Occasionally bits of water sprayed onto our picnic lunch

"To do what?"I asked curiously

"Trust me, you'll thank me for this."

I trusted my mother, she was everything to me. Little did I know that the trust I had put in her would burn away like fire does to paper

"Sweetie, stand up."

I got up and stood on the rock that was dangerously close to the waterfall, any person would've hesitated and then refused but I being the idiot I was didn't listen to my subconscious. I stood there admiring the view when suddenly I was falling. I let out a bloodcurdling scream, clawing at anything to hold on. Down there I was a boy, he looked at me and continued walking. I stared at him hard, images flashed before my eyes, slowly I started altering them. When I was done the images faded.

"Help me! Thomas!"

He glanced at me and with agility and speed he leapt into the air and caught me right before I hit the water filled with jagged rocks. Once on land I looked at him confused. What the hell did I just do? I felt kind of bad so I returned his memories to normal and ran.

*flashback over*

"Fetch the door Hazel. Someone's knocking."yelled my mother

I ran to the door and opened it. I gasped in recognition.

"Thomas,"I muttered under my breath

He gazed at me he knew me.

"Hazel de Nile?"he asked

"Um y-yes."I stammered

"You're in the Keeper Exams. I've seen your power. Congratulations."he said curtly

I nodded my head in thanks. He pivoted on his heel and walked away

"See darling? I told you you'd thank me."said my mother patting me on the back

I clicked my tongue in annoyance and stomped upstairs. How dandy.
