I
Light. Bright light. That is what greeted me when I walked through the peculiar arch. Wait a second....
'Light?' The thought popped into my mind, as if my train of thought had crashed right into my mind. Due to the sudden brightness change, I raised a hand to block the sun.
My mind was flipping out at the moment, as I had no recollection as to how I had reached this point. I racked my mind for the sequence of events that happened before I got here, wherever I was.
All I remembered was that I was running after Trevor....
Thats right! I passed inside the cave my mother warned me about many times... But that wasn't my top priority at the moment.
Breathing slightly heavier, I cupped my hands around my mouth. "Trevor!" I called, but it seemed to ring out towards nothing, almost as if he wasn't there, wherever I was. I raked my eyes at the surrounding area. And sure enough, I didn't recognize the place-- The semi-tall grass seemed to be my dog's cover out there.
"Trevor!!!" I called out again. And silence still lingered. "You gotta be kidding me," I muttered, running my hands through my locks frustrated, "Where am I?" I was confused, there was no way that a cave arch could lead to a sunny wheat-like field. That's impossible....
Right?
I walked around in a mini-circle, taking in the gaze that enveloped the area in which I occupied. This was too strange for me to fathom.
"Have you finished flipping youer mind out yet?" a voice called out from behind me. I turned around, seeking the voice's owner, but I didn't see them.
"Hello?" I called out, stepping forward a few steps. 'Nobody is around,' I noted.
"Is youer hearing off? I'm up here." they called again, this time, my attention was brought higher, and I saw it.
In the air, about two feet above my head, was a creature. A tiny, winged creature. It's bright purple eyes staring down into mine. It was like a small basketball, with wings stuck into it crudely, what seemed to be a pair of headphones, and a face plastered into the front.
I freaked out, and somehow in my panic, I tripped on my own feet and fell on my bottom. Typical me. My mouth was gaping as I continued to stare at it. "W-W-What a-a-are y-you?" I stuttered, raising an arm to point at it.
"Well, for starters, staring is rude, but I'll let that slide. It's not everyday you see someone like me."
"Excuse me?"
"Well, moving on, I'm what you may call..." it paused a moment, as if it was trying to find the right word, "A Fairy."
"Excuse me?"
"Well I should be the one saying that. Anyway," it seemed irritated, "What were you thinking? Following me like that? Yo-"
"Excuse me? I don't think that I quite follow. I'm just supposed to believe that YOU, are indeed... A Fairy?"
"I know that this seems unreasonable girl, but I can assure that yo-"
"And I don't quite remember ever seeing you as I somehow ended up here." I stood up, dusting my pants as i motioned to the surrounding area.
"Well, I assume you were in a cave. Running after someone. Possibly a close friend."
That's when it clicked. I pointed at the fairy. "Your telling me... That you sir, are Trevor?"
"You finally understand. I am Trevor McClaggen." He tilted forward a bit, which I assumed was a bow.
With that response, I took off my glasses, cleaned them with my shirt, and put them back on, blinking my eyes as I affirmed what I was seeing. Trevor, my dog, was a fairy.
"What? This has gotta be a dream." I put my hands on the top of my head.
Trevor was silent. He stared at me, almost as if he was waiting for me to say something to him. "Wait, if you are Trevor, and this is a field, and it was originally a cave, then am I somewhere entirely new? I am so utterly confused. Oh no. If I can't go back the way I came, then that means that I may never see Ollie or my mother ever again. Oh no, Mom. She's going to be so worried for me. I don't know if she can take it, me being gone. It's just me and her, and when she gets home she'll find out I'm gone and then she-"
"Okay OKAY!" Trevor yelled, pulling my frantic rant to a stop. "I get it; youer scared and alone in a place you don't know where it is, I get that. But youer rant isn't going to do a single thing to change that! Goodness, this is why I pr- Nevermind that. It's just a waste. Good job Trevor, now you have a new problem, Skylar here wasn't supposed to find out about this! Geist isn't going to be happy..."
"Wait, what is going on? I feel that I need closure on this." I stepped closer.
"I don't know -"
"Spill."
Trevor heaved a sigh. "Fine," he spun around in defeat, "How do I put this.... Oh, so I'll be blunt, you are in a new world."
"What?"
"Wait, there's more. Youer in Mendwall, a world of supposed paradise, where all souls go towards eventually. The Afterlife, if you will it. Here, you will find many wonders, mysteries, and other myths and legends that seem familiar lurk here, as a way of being inspiration. Few decades ago, the King was in a bind. His Oracles and Priests foretold of the futures of his wife and children. In an attempt to protect the said family, he entrusted the Fairy Tribe with his family, but alas... The Fairy Escorts were overtaken by the assassin guild, The Hunters. In a fit of rage, the King set out on a failure of a conquest, his armies decimated anyone who got in his way. What he never expected though, was a prophecy left behind-" He took a deep breath as he continued.
"A secret must not take place on a windy day. A Keeper will cleave and the clever courtesan will circulate. They will arise from a Mendigo twin child of a seventh Mendwallan child and the puerest of all Mendigo hearts . As history catches up with the present, in the darkest of times, A Keeper will become a beacon of light for the children of Mendwall. The blind swift shall not quaver with the waking general in a tree. The pessimistic bird shall gloat. They will not debate. A Keeper will come forth to stop the gloating."
"The King was beyond mad, he went insane. He was often referred to as a bird, due to his sense of freedom and agility. And to be told that his downfall would come from the union of one of his people and one from another world? Imagine that..."
"I bet he was devastated..." I murmured.
"He went berserk. He sealed off all the ways from us, setting up posts where guards kept a close eye on them, and he forbade any transdimensional travel. And so, a faction of the people, myself included, decided that the King had gone off his rocker, so we fight for freedom. Mendwall is supposed to be a paradise, not a prison."
"One question- What is a Mendigo?" I inquired.
Trevor smiled. "You."
"Pardon?"
"Well, to be more clear... People from Earth are somehow more attuned with the Flow here in Mendwall. Mendigo are Humans from Earth. They essentially can be a bit tricky to discern after they reach Mendwall. You see, after one of youer humans visit Mendwall, you awaken something inside you. And that something stays with you everywhere, but the control, power, and usability varies between worlds... Mendigo are essentially god-like humans."
"How should I believe you?"
"I can name a few Mendigoes for you... Nickola Tesla. After he visited Mendwall, he realized that he could utilize the electronic particles and force them into cells. He was a siphoner of electricity. Christopher Columbus came here after he visited some of his family in Spain, and he gained the ability to form what you would call Latitude and Longitude on the surface of the Earth. Charles Darwin was able to specify which species of animals were related to whom through a special telepathy. John Schmidt was able to transform his sweat and blood into different poisons, venoms, and toxins when he simply touches it, as he was immune to poisoning. Joan of Arc was able to rile supporters with her ability to figure out which words were the right ones, and she did so at a single glance."
"Wait... So your telling me that since I visited here, I'll gain a power?" I was sweating profusely. I didn't want another reason to be called a freak.
"No, you don't GAIN a power. It's been there the entire time, you just never unlocked youer power so to speak. Gosh, this is embarrassing."
"Why's that?"
"Do you realize what this means?"
"I don't follow..."
"The King at this point will have noticed that we've traveled illegally. You aren't necessarily the best person to have around at the moment."
"Why?"
"You no nothing about Mendwall, and you don't have youer ability!"
Geez, what a supportive dog he is. I think I liked him better as a dog.
"Anyway," he turned around, "There's no room to dilly dally, we need to move on..."
"To where specifically?"
"To headquarters. Besides, I think you want to get home if I'm not mistaken?" I nodded my head quickly. "Then let's get a move on." He began to fly off in a direction, and I began to follow.
As I caught up to him, I noticed that Trevor seemed to be put off by my being here. I mean, given that I wasn't intending to travel to another world, but that wasn't at the top of my priorities.
All of a sudden, Trevor fell down into the height of the tall grass. I just stared at him. "Get youer rump down here!" he hissed through his teeth. I obeyed.
"What is it?" I asked, but Trevor kept his gaze fixed in front of us, not saying a single word. And I then understood why.
About thirty or so meters in front of us, stood a hulking, armored figure. The shiny steel-looking armor had the designs of a ram engraved into it, and the helm was that of what seemed to be a horned dragon of sorts.
The figure skulked around, mace in hand, as he circled around an area, and Trevor cursed under his breath, or so I assumed it was.
"We can't use the rift by 'ere," he whispered, "They have a Blubarschnaud here. And where there is a Blubarschnaud, there is most definitely a Necromercer. And I don't have the materials necessary to deal with either at the moment."
"Meaning?"
Trevor glanced at me for a moment, before returning to stare at the hulking figure. "It means that you'll have a ways to go before you're be able to return to youer world..."
Go figure. I couldn't do one thing interesting without messing it up somehow. I knew that this'd be the case, but I had a glimmer of hope that it wouldn't end up that way. But oh well. "So what do we do? Are we just going to sit here until they leave?"
"No. If they're 'ere, then that means that either A: The King has sealed off the point due to the people's abusing of the rifts, or B: He has found out the exact area in which you arrived. Either way, we'll be compromised as long as we stay 'ere. We need to move on."
"You're just going to give up here? It's just a couple of soldiers, what can they do?"
"Well excuse me for being the voice of reason, but as long as we're 'ere, there's the chance that the Blubarschnaud will catch youer scent, and he will hunt you down. And also, quite frankly, I don't intend to die any time soon..." And with that, he zipped off in a new direction.
I contemplated what Trevor had said, and I sighed heavily. My dog was a Fairy, and I had to accept that my understanding of the universe was completely off. I had a lot to learn before I could be at my most knowledgeable.
And I had to accept that my life will change from that day forward, for better or for worse, I didn't quite know yet.
