Ch.28 What Kind of Hero Will You Be

Todoroki held the door open for Hailey as they entered the school. Hailey thanked him for holding the door for her, then greeted Midoriya and Iida as she noticed them in the entrance as well.

"Good morning!" Hailey waved with her right hand in a cheerful manner.

"Good morning, Hailey!" Midoriya greeted, he looked a bit surprised to see Todoroki shaking the rain water off of Hailey's umbrella before putting it in her bag. "You too, Todoroki!"

"Good morning, Midoriya." Todoroki greeted back.

"How're your arms, Midi?" Hailey asked, noticing his wrapped fingers.

"Oh, they're a lot better now, it helped to take a break from everything yesterday." Midoriya answered.

"Same here, taking yesterday off from everything was very much needed." Hailey agreed.

Midoriya wanted to ask Hailey how her shoulder was, but he felt really awkward with Todoroki still standing by Hailey's side.

"Did Iida seem alright to you, Midi?" Hailey quieted her voice as she noticed Iida rush off. "I saw the news yesterday about his brother and the hero killer."

During the sports festival, Iida's older brother was attacked by the Hero Killer, Stain, injuring the hero severely. The story was covered yesterday, as Ingenium was still alive at least.

"I'm not sure, he was kind of dismissive when I tried to talk to him." Midoriya answered, Hailey could tell that he was concerned for his friend.

"I guess he doesn't want to focus on his brother's condition today, that's fair. All we can do is help him take his mind off it." Hailey suggested, as she walked with the two towards class.

Midoriya nodded, "I guess we can try that."

"Just don't act like you're walking on eggshells either, because trust me, that makes things worst." Hailey warned, having experience in both roles. Seeing Midoriya's nervous expression, Hailey smiled and reassured him, "I'll help you out if you want, Midi. You and Todo both know how much I love to talk about literally anything."

"Thanks, Hailey, you're a lifesaver." Midoriya smiled in appreciation.

"Here, let me get that." Todoroki slid open the door to the classroom.

"Thanks, Todo." Hailey thanked gleefully.

"T-Thanks, Todoroki." Midoriya sheepishly muttered as he followed through the door.

As they entered the classroom, the students pulled them into conversations of how they felt like the sports festival made the class feel like celebrities.

Hailey found it a bit weird that not  a lot of people approached her or Todoroki while on the train this morning. Maybe they were a bit nervous because of how merciless Todoroki was during the festival made him intimidating for anyone to really want to comment to them about their performance during the festival.

Ashido pulled Hailey aside to the small group of girls and asked her what the deal was with her and Todoroki.

"Oh, he's proving to me that he'll be a good friend so that I'll forgive him and be his friend again." Hailey answered honestly in a low volume.

"Really? Are you he isn't just going to ditch you and go back to being a jerk once you say 'all is forgiven'?" Asido retorted, still holding a bit of a grudge against their classmate in question.

"C'mon, have some more faith. I believe in second chances and Todo seems to be making an honest effort, so I'm keeping my hopes up." Hailey assured her friends.

The bell rang and the students took the indication to sit in their seats. Mr Aizawa entered the room, bandages no longer covering him like a mummy. But a prominent scar underneath his eye reminded Hailey that he was still recovering.

"Morning."

"Good morning, Mr Aizawa." The class greeted him in unison as he walked to the front of the room.

"Ribbit, Mr Aizawa, you don't have bandages anymore." Asui pointed out. "That's good news!"

"The old lady went a little overboard in her treatment." Mr Aizawa responded as he scratched under his tired eye. "Anyway, we have a big class today on Hero Informatics."

Dread weighed down on the students as their imaginations ran ranpid of what could possibly entail.

"You need codes names." Mr Aizawa stated, a sense of relief replaced the student's fears. "Time to pick your hero identities."

"This is gonna be totally awesome!" The class exclaimed in excitement.

Mr Aizawa's eyes glowed red and his hair went upward as he glared at his students, using his quirk to quiet everyone down as he continued the introduction.

"This is related to the pro hero draft picks that I mentioned last time we were in class together. Usually students don't have to worry about the draft yet, not until their second or third year actually. But your class is different. In fact, by extending offers to first years like you, pros are essentially investing in your potential. Any offers can be rescinded if their interest in you dies down before graduation, though."

"So what you're saying is we'll still have to prove ourselves after we've gotten recruited?" Hagakure inquired through her understanding.

"Correct." Mr Aizawa answered.

Hailey knew this to be a fact, her mother often talked about how she'd let go of some interning heroes who weren't cut out for the job they were pursuing, whether it be their character or quirk's abilities. Still, there still resided some pressure.

"Now, here are the totals for those of you who got offers." Mr Aizawa then clicked a button on the remote and the blackboard showed the results in a holographic form.

Todoroki was shown to have gotten the most offers at 4123, Hailey coming in a close second with 3890, Bakugou coming in third with 3556, and the numbers quickly dropping to 360, 301, 272 and so forth until Sero's name at 14.

"In past years, it's been more spread out. But there's a pretty big gap this time." Mr Aizawa noted.

"Gah! That's no fair." Kaminari whined dramatically, leaning his head back in distress.

"What about the real star? Moi?" Aoyama fumed.

"Todoroki got the most, ahead of Bakugou?" Jirou took notice.

"Yeah, it's the opposite of how they placed in the festival." Kirishima added.

"Well, agencies look at more than just your quirk power and how useful it is, it also counts for the personality you put on. We were always followed by a camera during the events, so they heard what was all said while we 'performed', if you will." Hailey explained to her classmates as the information dawned on her, remembering how she watched the rerun of the festival yesterday and cringed at how she looked and acted.

"That makes sense, they probably don't wanna work with the guy who had to be chained up at the end." Sero figured.

"If I scared a pro, they're just weak!" Bakugou shouted in anger.

Yaoyoruzu commented on how Todoroki must be feeling prideful with the amount of offers he got.

"These offers are probably because of my father." He answered, a bit annoyed at the thought.

Hailey groaned and turned around to the two of them, "I didn't even think of that, that's probably why I got so much too, mom's got connections. Son of a bitch." She cursed, now feeling disappointed that most of her offers weren't even because she had potential.

"C'mon Rosie, I'm sure that's not entirely true, you got fourth place." Kirishima tried to cheer her up.

"I got tossed around like a rag doll and lost because my dumbass didn't realize I was on cracked ice. I think I don't deserve 80% of those offers." Hailey grumbled, lying her face on her desk and moped.

"Despite these results, you'll all be interning with pros, got it? Even those of you who didn't get offers." Mr Aizawa pointed out, explaining that everyone in the class already experienced combat with real villains during the attack on the USJ facility, so experiencing first hand with pro heroes would be more beneficial to the students. Hence why they needed hero names.

"These hero names will likely be temporary, but take them seriously or-"

"You'll have hell to pay later!" Midnight interjected as she dramatically entered the class. "What you pick today could be your codename for life. You better be careful or you'll be stuck with something utterly indecent." She explained as she strutted in.

"Yeah, she's got a good point. Midnight is going to have final approval over your codenames. It's not my forte." Mr Aizawa summarized, grabbing his yellow sleeping back from behind the podium. "The name you give yourself is important. It helps reinforce your image and shows what kinda of hero you wanna be in the future. A codename tells people exactly what you represent. Take "All Might" for example."

Whiteboards and markers were handed out to the students for them to write down their ideas.

'Wow, I've only thought of a few names here and there, but damn does this feel like more pressure than designing a concept for my hero costume.' Hailey thought as she tried to imagine different names. She tossed the idea around before, but struggled to remember most of the other suggestions.

"Bro, I'm usually a factory for these kind of things, but there's so many that I'm not sure what fits." Hailey said out loud, her marker not even opened for use.

"At least you have ideas, I'm struggling a bit." Kirishima admitted, not sure either.

Thinking back to how Mr Aizawa used All Might as an example, Hailey recalled when she was little wanting to be a brave hero, one that wanted to make everyone else feel strong. Translating her younger self's desire, Hailey decided that she would base her hero type on being the 'couragous hero'.

"Now students, who among you is ready to share?" Midnight inquired as a few minutes passed.

Hailey didn't even have a name written down yet, she guessed that everyone already had a good enough idea of what they wanted their names to be.

Aoyama confidently stood before the class and presented his hero name.

"Hold your breath." He then showed everyone what he had written down. "The Shining Hero! My name is 'I can not stop twinkling'!"

Some of the class didn't think he was being serious, but they all knew that Aoyama had the flair to always express his confidence with his sparkling personality.

Midnight took the whiteboard and scribbled a correction. "It'll be better this way. Take out the 'I' and shorten the 'cannot' to 'can't'."

"She likes it?" Some of the students were in disbelief.

Asido excitedly walked up to the front to present. "Okie doki, lemme go next! My codename: Alien Queen!"

"Woah! That's really good, Mina!" Hailey complimented in approval.

"Hold on- like that horrible monster with the acidic blood? I don't think so." Midnight rejected, fearful from her experience with the reference.

"Dang it." Ashido murmured in defeat, going back to her desk.

Luckily, Asui's hero name 'Froppy' took away the pressure of coming up with a cleverly weird name, as it was a friendly and approachable name.

Kirishima went next, proclaiming that he was The Sturdy Hero: Red Riot, paying homage to his idol Crimson Riot.

"Wow Kiri, you're so cool." Hailey smiled as he returned to his desk beside her. "I don't know what I wanna be called, I had this idea in mind, but.. I'm not sure."

"Try saying it out loud, see if it has a good ring to it." Kirishima suggested.

Hailey nodded and tried it out. "I like the name 'Couragea', the courageous hero."

"That sounds like a really good name!" Midoriya complimented, his eyes sparkling.

"I don't know if it fits the vibe my costume and quirk give off though." Hailey pondered out loud. "I kind of always dreamed of becoming a Symbol of Courage, like in the way All Might is the Symbol of Peace, but that might not work because our quirks aren't really that similar."

She sighed, feeling discouraged now.

"Maybe you can change your name if your image changes? Some heroes do when they graduate." Kirishima suggested.

"You have a point there." Hailey answered and looked down at her still blank board.

A few more of her classmates presented their hero names, some relating to their appearances or their quirks.

'Maybe that's the route I take.' Hailey decided, looking over to Midoriya.

"Hey Midi, do you mind opening this for me please? I've got an idea now." She asked, holding her still shut marker towards him.

"Uh, sure." Midoriya pulled the cap off of the marker and stuck it onto the other end of the marker for her.

"Thanky, thank." Hailey smiled and started writing her hero name in kanji.

After Ashido presented her hero name again, this time as 'Pinky', Hailey decided to go next. Carrying her board in her uninjured hand, facing the written part away from her classmates, Hailey stood behind the podium.

"I've always been inspired to help other people feel safe and that they can feel brave, and I want to become the symbol of something. So, call me, 'The Courageous Hero: Sound Wave!" Hailey one handedly turned the board to her class.

Despite her classmates showing excitement, Midnight analyzed the name before speaking.

"The name itself is wonderful, as it incorporates both of your quirks, and if I be so bold, is taken from your grandparents, correct?" Midnight inquired.

Her classmates voiced their confusion and Hailey sheepishly blushed."Yeah, they were known as 'Speed Wave' back in the day, because they were a pair."

"Woah! Talk about a legecy!" Hagakure exclaimed.

"But I'm afraid that the 'courageous hero' doesn't fit that theme." Midnight pointed out as she criticised.

"I-It doesn't?" Hailey whispered, disappointment evident in her voice.

"Couragous is a general term, not specific enough for what you already have." Midnight added.

"Oh... maybe then I can just be 'The Vocal and  Wavelength Hero'?" Hailey sheepishly suggested, feeling more self conscious the longer she stood before her classmates.

Midnight's behavior quickly switched back to her positive enthusiasm. "That works perfectly!"

Hailey's shoulders and form slumped with sadness that she wasn't able to incorporate symbolism of where her dream started in her hero name.

She moped through the rest of the presentations, staring at her board, 'Couragea' was scribbled off as Hailey began to believe that it was stupid of her to think she could live up to that name anyways.

"Are you sure you want to be called that?" Midnight inquired to the next student who presented.

Hailey looked up to see that it was Midoriya who had gone next. Her eyes widened at the name that he had written.

"I used to hate it. But then something changed, I guess.. someone taught me that it could have a different meaning."

Hailey thought back to the day that she sat on the train with Midoriya after their third day of classes.

"Really? 'Defenseless Izuku'? Wow, that is creatively terrible." Hailey remarked as Midoriya explained why Bakugou calls him 'Deku' all the time.

"Y-Yeah, he's called me that since we were kids." Midoriya sighed, looking down at his feet in shame.

Hoping to cheer him up, Hailey casually leaned back in her seat beside him. "I hope that you know that you are anything being 'defenseless'." Midoriya glanced back at her. "I'd say that you're 'dependable', 'determined', 'devoted', 'delightful' - I can go on." Hailey grinned, her next example in a more joking way. "'Dentally-great', 'definetly-adorable'."

Midoriya chuckled a bit at her last suggestions, "I guess those sound better. I never thought to change the meaning of the name."

"Don't worry, I'm a master at it." Hailey playfully nudged him.

"Were you picked on?" Midoriya inquired, not believing that anyone would want to bully her.

"Yep, I was kind of the annoying chubby kid, who was very enthusiastic - plus my hair colour didn't help." Hailey answered, but kept her tone lighthearted. "They would call me a whole bunch of names, some clever, some not so much. But if they were clever, I'd think of a positive meaning that they could have. Took the power away from them and continued on with my life."

"And that had a huge impact on how I felt. So now I really like it." Midoriya smiled. "'Deku', that has to be my codename."

Hailey smiled back at Midoriya, not entirely sure if she was the one to inspire his new perspective of the name, but still, it reminded her how much he inspired her. Midoriya seemed to be a catalyst that would inspire her to change for the better. She looked back down at the crossed out name and decided that she'll work hard to deserve the title that she desired.
