Chapter 17: The Village
I sat on the roof, watching the clouds. I thought about, pretty much everything. But mostly my rage. I had to get that under control, what was wrong with me? I've never felt that kind of rage in my life.
"I thought I'd find you up here." I heard Ái's voice from behind me, she must have climbed up from the window.
"Mm? Yeah....." It was all I could say. I know she didn't think I knew, but I saw that look in her eyes. She was scared of me, at least in that moment.
And I never want to be the cause of her fear.
"So...... About what happened." She started.
"I'm sorry for scaring you, I just...lost control." I said immediately, and I felt a hand on my shoulder.
I looked up, and good god, She was radiant, the sun shone through her hair and she smiled down on me like an angel from above.
"Léon, you could never scare me, he pushed you past your limit. That's all." She sat down next to me on the warm roof.
"He shouldn't have though, I just snapped for no reason, I'm a monster." I replied, and my coldness was replaced with a fuzzy feeling in my chest.
She had hugged me from behind, and I saw her go red in the face.
"You are not a monster, you are the kindest person I know." She wasn't joking, no sarcastic remark, and she didn't playfully hit me either, she was serious.
"No, that would be you." I turned around and hugged her, I was a crybaby, I felt like one.
"Léon."
I looked up once again, and this time I felt her lips slam onto mine like a passionate freight train.
Surprised, But oh so into it, I pulled her closer. Releasing some of my stress into the kiss, I felt her merge into me, she was to stubborn to melt from it.
It gave me a sense of confidence, of power. Something I could and was getting addicted to.
She pulled back, breathless and blushing, and I look of both surprise and glee.
"Wow. That was...... new." She said more to herself then me. And I chuckled, I felt a little better now, she was definitely good at boosting my mood.
"Do you want me to do it again?" I asked, my voice low and heavy. Like I had just woken up,
"When did you get so smooth Léon? Last time I checked you were the nervous one." She said sarcastically, and I did turn pink a little.
"Hey now, and for your information I was always this smooth." I retorted, but still letting her go and looking out over the wasteland.
"Hey Ái, what if we just..... go out, with Luna and take our stuff, and just explore. Like we used to." The thought was sudden, and I didn't even realize I had said it aloud until she answered.
"I mean yeah. I've been wanting to do that for awhile. I just thought you would want to stay here."
"Yeah! Let's just go. And when we get homesick we head home." I replied, actually getting really excited. And I grabbed her hand in mine.
"You wanna?" I said very quickly, and very suddenly. And she gave me a yes almost just as fast.
"Yeah, Lets go!" She drug me down the stairs and we immediately started packing as much as we could carry without it being cumbersome. I put a green and red bandana around Luna's neck. And in about an hour we were gone.
Spur of the moment you could say, but honestly I liked traveling, it was fun to explore and find things you normally wouldn't.
We went west. And since it was unexplored to us. I started mapping it, that was until we came upon a river of clear crisp water.
"Uh..... isn't the water normally radioactive green? Why is it blue?" Ái asked while putting some into a can.
"Don't drink it." I tried to knock it out of her hand but she shoved me away.
"I'm not dummy, I'm checking it for contamination." She pulled out a device from her pack and it started immediately beeping wildly.
"It's a Geiger counter. It beeps when there's radiation." She explained, and pulled out a metal rod and placed it in the water.
It fell silent. It was clean water, on the surface. Not in range of our house. But close enough to make me a little mad.
"Your kidding me! There are no clean streams, not after the meltdowns. That's impossible!"
"Apparently not. Maybe the earth is finally starting to heal. Or, this is man made. I'd say the latter." She replied. Taking a gulp of the water and then handing it to me.
"Fill up your canteen again, having spring water is a little better than ground water." She filled her canteen and stood up.
We waded the stream. Going into a half dead forest. The leaves getting a lighter shade of brown from the rest of the brown, everything else.
I stepped under a low hanging branch and I was suddenly hoisted up into the air by the leg, I had stepped into a trap.
Ái whipped around, and then started busting a gut on the ground.
"Don't laugh at me. Just get me down from here!" I yelled and she took an old hunting knife and cut the heavy rope holding me upside down.
"Try not to step into any more traps, if there are hunters traps, maybe there's a village nearby." She evaluated. Sheathing her knife and climbing up the rest of the way up the hill.
"Well, point one for me." I joined her and saw the poorest village I had ever seen in my life.
The shacks, if you could call them that. Were falling in on themselves. The small farm that they did have was so dry and dead nothing could be harvested from it. And the people?
They were in rags, limping, malnourished. And all looked like they were going to fall over dead any second.
"Oh god Léon, these people are starving to death." Ái whispered, and I looked down into the village again.
"Then let's go see what we can do." I replied, and I rushed down into the village. With Ái shouting at me.
But hey. At least I was being helpful.
