Out of the Frying-Pan Into the Fire

Gandalf began to count us as we ran past him and stopped. "That's twelve. And Bombur, that makes thirteen." He looked at Caleniel and me. "And the two ladies." He smiled briefly. He looked around and stepped forward. "Where's Bilbo? Where is our Hobbit? Where is our Hobbit!!?" We all looked around.

My pendant would not stop glowing so I tucked it into my shirt.

"Curse that halfling," Dwalin said. "Now he's lost!?"

Gloin said, "I thought he was with Dori!"

Dori's brows crashed at Gloin. "Don't blame me!"

Gandalf stepped towards Dori. "Well, where did you last see him?"

Nori said, "I think I saw him slip away when they first collared us."

Gandalf seemed to glare at Nori. "What happened exactly? Tell me!"

Thorin walked away from Gandalf with crashed brows. "I'll tell you what happened. Master Baggins saw his chance and he took it! He's thought of nothing but his soft bed and his warm hearth since first he stepped out of his door! We will not be seeing our Hobbit again. He is long gone."

I felt myself pause like the others. "He... he didn't want a place amoung us..."

Thorin glared at Caleniel. "Now as for you, Elven--"

"No, he isn't."

We all turned to Bilbo who suddenly appeared. A grin appeared on my face. "He came back," I whispered. I placed a hand on Thorin's forearm. "He does have a place amoung us." Thorin blinked and looked at Bilbo.

Gandalf let out a small laugh. "Bilbo Baggins! I've never been so glad to see anyone in my life!"

"Me too," I smiled at him. Bilbo smiled and patted Balin on the back as he came toward us.

"Bilbo," Kili said, "we'd given you up!"

"How on earth did you get past the Goblins," Fili asked.

Dwalin was skeptical. "How indeed." Bilbo let out a nervous laugh and pointed at Dwalin.

I paused. He was right to question. I barely managed, and I was with the Dwarves. "How--"

"Well, what does it matter?" Gandalf looked at us. "He's back!"

Thorin looked at Bilbo with crashed brows. "It matters. I want to know. Why did you come back?"

Bilbo locked gazes with Thorin for a moment. "Look, I know you doubt me. I know you always have. And you're right; I often think of Bag End. I miss my books and my armchair and my garden. See, that's where I belong. That's home, and that's why I came back... 'cause you don't have one. A home. It was taken from you, but I will help you take it back if I can." Thorin's expression eased as he looked at Bilbo. I pursed my lips and looked down at my pendant, pulling it out to look at it.

Thorin cleared his throat and looked at Caleniel. "Miss Caleniel, was it?"

I quickly tucked my pendant back into my dark Elven shirt.

"Yes?" Caleniel stepped forward.

"I--" Thorin paused at the echo of a howl. He unsheathed his sword and turned around. "Out of the frying-pan..."

"And into the fire." Gandalf turned to us. "Run. Run!"

I heard another howl and began running down the hill with the others. I avoided having to jump down from large rocks as I ran. I learned from Skyrim that it would only slow me down. My eyes widened as I heard the feet of something large behind all of us. I saw something run past me and jumped at Bilbo. The Hobbit ducked and pressed himself against a rock. The warg went past him and landed in front of him.

"Bilbo!" My eyes widened as a Warg jumped on me. It growled as it raised its head above me. I tried to unsheath my sword, but the Warg turned around, hitting my face with its tail. The Warg growled and suddenly fell on its side.

Caleniel rushed towards me. "Are you alright?" I nodded. "Good." She helped me up quickly. "Let's go."

We caught up with the rest of the company. My eyes widened as I looked ahead, noticing no more road, and looked back. "What now?"

"Up into the trees," Gandalf ordered. "All of you! Come on, climb! Bilbo, climb!"

"Here!" Caleniel pushed me up into the tree. She turned around and shot an arrow.

"I didn't ask for your help." I climbed a few branches higher.

"You did not have to." She jumped into the tree and climbed up to a branch that leveled mine. She locked gazes with me. "Besides I recieve a lot of that attitude from Thorin." She smiled. "I somewhat expected the same from everyone in the company."

My eyes lowered as I paused. There was a howl, and I looked around for the rest of the company.

"They're coming!" Thorin started looking for a tree to climb. He choose the same tree I was in. He watched as Bilbo quickly climbed into a tree just before the Wargs would spot him. I felt myself sigh quietly. The wargs came and started looking around. The wargs stopped growling and turned to a white warg. My eyes widened as I remembered what Thorin once told me. I looked down at Thorin, who was on the branch below me.

He slowly turned to see the pale Orc. "Azog?!" Azog sniffed and locked gazes with Thorin. He began speaking in another language. He grinned as he said something about Thorin and Thrain. "It cannot be," Thorin whispered. Azog pointed to Thorin and spoke again.

Instantly, the Wargs rushed at us and tried to climb the trees. They only broke the lower branches in their efforts, but the trees were shaking and keeping my balance became difficult. Caleniel shot one Warg dead. The Wargs broke a few branches higher than the ones before. The trees began to uproot. The trees began to lean back in the direction of the cliff.

"Move!"

We all moved from whichever tree we were on to the tree on the cliff. The Wargs rapidly began trying to attack us on that tree. We simply watched, trying to figure out what to do next.

A burning pine cone fell and hit one of the Wargs. "Fili!" Gandalf threw a burning pinecone down to Fili.

I looked around for a pine cone. Caleniel caught one that was on fire, and she lighted mine. We threw our pinecones at the Wargs. I laughed as my pinecone hit a Warg on its head. "Did you see that?"

Caleniel nodded as she looked for another pinecone. Azog roared as he watched all of the Wargs run away from the fire. Everyone cheered, but the tree suddenly leaned back and was now vertical. I gripped a branch tightly and tried not to look down. I heard a few dwarves scream.

"Mister Gandalf!"

I looked at Dori who was holding himself and Ori up. I gasped as they began to fall. Gandalf swiftly swung his staff down and Dori grabbed on to it. I let out a sigh of relief and turned to Caleniel. I paused when I noticed she was staring at something. I slowly turned my head and saw Thorin running toward Azog. Thorin swung his sword, but the white Warg's paw hit Thorin, making him fall back.

"Thorin!" My eyes were wide, and I stared. The Warg turned around, and Azog hit Thorin's face with his mace.

"No," Balin cried.

"Thorin!" I struggled to pull myself up. I barely managed to get my stomach up. But I paused as I saw Bilbo stand in front of me. I heard Thorin cry out in pain.

"Thorin!" Dwalin broke a branch. "No!"

I heard Thorin cry out again, and Azog said something. I tried to lift myself up more. Bilbo pulled out his sword, taking deep breaths. He ran and I managed to lift my knees. I slowly stood up and saw Bilbo killing an Orc. I looked around for Thorin and ran to him when I spotted him.

"Thorin!" I unsheathed my sword and stood next to him. Bilbo stood right in front of the Orc, staring him down. He swung his sword nervously. Azog glared and spoke again. The other Orcs slowly paced their Wargs toward us.

"NO!" Kili, Fili, and Dwalin rushed in, attacking the Orcs. I stood by Thorin's side, ready to attack anyone that came close. Bilbo's body landed near me. The White Warg growled at me as I took a step toward Bilbo. I stood my ground and took another step. An arrow hit the White Warg's leg. I looked at Caleniel, and she was preparing another arrow. Azog spoke and the Warg's attention turned back to us.

Suddenly the sound of a eagle. Both the Warg and the Orc began looking around as Dwarves were snatched away and trees were pushed to fall on Orcs. Several Wargs were tossed off the cliff by the eagles. I paused as I saw an eagle take Thorin. I tried to get his shield, but I was snatched and tossed onto an eagle with Bilbo.

I looked around at all the other eagles. "What's going on? Where are they taking us?"

"I-I don-- I do not know." Bilbo shook his head and looked around. I surveyed the land as the eagles continued to fly.

"Thorin," Fili yelled. I gasped as I saw that Thorin was still unconcious.

"He'll, uh... He'll be all right," Bilbo told me. But the Hobbit's agaped mouth made me very uneasy.

I looked at Thorin and slowly nodded to myself. "Thorin." The eagles flew into a valley and began circling a large rock. Thorin was the first to touch the rock.

Gandalf rushed to Thorin. "Thorin! Thorin." He was at Thorin's side, examining him. Bilbo and I landed. Bilbo paused after a few steps of  walking toward Thorin. I rushed to him and was beside Gandalf.

"Is he...?" I looked at Gandalf.

Gandalf simply placed his hand above Thorin's face and moved it down Thorin's face. He started some sort of spell.

Thorin gasped some air and looked at Gandalf. "Thank you, Gandalf." He looked at me. "Bre."

I let out a small laugh. "Thorin."

He nodded and looked back at Gandalf. "The halfling?"

"It's all right." Gandalf nodded. "Bilbo is here. He's quite safe." I looked up, noticing the other Dwarves had arrived. Dwalin, Kili, and I helped Thorin up. Thorin faced Bilbo and Caleniel.

"You!" Thorin's eyes were on Bilbo. "What were you doing? You nearly got yourself killed!" Thorin began walking toward Bilbo. "Did I not say that you would be a burden? That you would not survive in the wild and that you had no place amongst us?" Bilbo swallowed several times, thinking of what to say. I paused, wondering if he would say the same to me.

"I've never been so wrong in all my life!" Thorin embraced Bilbo.

My jaw fell. He gets a hug!!? I haven't gotten one of those! WHY? Then I paused, recalling Rivendell. The dwarves began cheering, and I slowly closed my mouth. I sighed and smiled. "He's a part of us."

Thorin finally pulled back from Bilbo. "I am sorry I doubted you."

Bilbo shook his head. "No, I would've doubted me too. I'm not a hero or a warrior... I'm not even a burglar."

I let out a small laugh and watched the screeching eagles.

"Is that what I think it is," Bilbo asked as he watched the eagles too. Thorin took a step foward, and I quickly followed him. There was a mountain out in the distance all by itself.

"Erebor," Gandalf said. "The Lonely Mountain. The last of the great Dwarf Kingdoms of Middle-Earth."

"Our home," Thorin smiled.

I stared at the beautiful mountain in awe. "I want to live there."

Thorin grabbed my hand. "There are many rooms available. You certainly can."

I grinned widely.

"A raven," Oin said. "The birds are returning to the mountain." I heard the chirping of the bird.

Gandalf let out a small laugh. "That, my dear Oin, is a thrush."

"But we'll take it as a sign," Thorin said, "a good omen."

"You're right." Bilbo looked at the thrush. "I do believe the worst is behind us."

I smiled and stared at the mountian for a moment. I looked down and paused. "Thorin, how are we getting down?"

Thorin paused and looked down. He cleared his throat."I'm sure there's a way."

"Are you two holding hands," Fili asked. I looked away blushing. Thorin and I backed away from each other. Gandalf let out a small laugh as I turned around facing away from the mountain. I squinted as I noticed the rock was like a slope. I walked past Fili to the other edge.

"Hey," Fili looked at me as I walked toward the edge. "Were you?"

I smiled as I noticed the perfect way down. "Guys! I found stairs! They're like stairs made from stone!"

Thorin let out a small laugh and grinned. The rest of the company laughed. Thorin stepped foward. "Come on, we have a home to go to."

Bofur gently took a hold of my arm. "Let me bind that for you."

I paused, and Kili winked as he walked past me to the stairs. I turned back to Bofur. "Okay."

Alex's Note (AN): Thank you for reading. Please check out the amazing girl who motivated me to write this story, NobleGhost. (She is who I based the character Bre off of.) Had it not been for her, I never would have thought of writing this. Actually, I wouldn't have written it at all if it hadn't been for her. Thank you again for reading :) Also I am writing for the other movies of The Hobbit.
