No Longer Retired

" Hey, old man. Something's off. You're going the wrong direction. If you're heading to Egypt, shouldn't you be traveling directly west? "

I looked towards Jotaro in the small speedboat. He was right. if we wanted to get to Egypt we would have to go another way.

" You seem to be heading toward that island. "

" That's right. Nice deduction. I have my reasons for keeping this to myself but before we arrive in Egypt we need to make a slight detour. Someone is waiting for us on the island. He is a man who is extremely important to our journey. "

" What is that supposed to mean? " Pol asked.

Joseph didn't say anything else the rest of the boat ride. We just enjoyed the waves as we got closer to the island. When the boat stopped we jumped out and walked to the edge of the forest.

" Hey, now, does someone actually live here? It's such a tiny little island, and it looks deserted. " Polnareff said looking around the trees and flowers that were around.

" Indeed, Mr. Joestar. Does he really live here? " Kakyoin asked facing Joseph's back.

" He lives here by himself. That's what he told me back in India. "

" Who do you mean by 'he'? " Kakyoin asked getting even more curious.

   " What? Indian Curry? "

   " Polnareff you dolt. "

" Hate to interrupt but I thought you should know someone's watching us from the grass over there. " Jotaro said pointing towards the long stripes of grass.

   " What? "

The man then proceeded to stand up and he started running away from us. I thought I recognized him, but I didn't get a clear look at his face.

   " He's running away! "

" He defiantly looks familiar. " I said.

Polnareff was the first one to start running after the man. We chased after both of them. The forest was thick but we kept up with the man. We appeared at a house, with some chickens. The man was holding a bowl of feed and he tossed them to the chickens. Joseph approached the gate, greeting the man.

" Excuse me, sir, my name is Joseph Joestar and I'm traveling with my companions to Egypt-"

   " I won't have it! Go away! "

   " His voice sounds like..."

" I won't say it again. Don't talk to me, got it? No one comes to see me when they have actual good news to report. I only get visitors when something bad happens! Just shut up! Go away! "

When he turned around I could feel tears in my eyes. It looked just like Avdol, except his clothes were gray and he had a gray goatee.

   " Mr. Avdol! "

   " Avdol wait! "

   " I said go! "

   " Hold on! That's impossible! "

" That wasn't Avdol. It was his father. He withdrew from society and lives alone on this island. I'm sorry I wasn't able to tell you about this earlier but if it ever became known to Dio that we stopped at this place Avdol's father would be in grave danger. I would never forgive myself if that happened. But for now, my focus has to be on telling him what every parent fears most. That his son is dead. "

I looked towards Polnareff and I could see him grimacing at the memories as they came back. I held his shoulder and he looked at me.

" Don't go back to those memories, Pol. His death wasn't your fault. "

" No, it's entirely my fault. I'll carry that burden for as long as I live. "

It was quiet for some time before Kakyoin spoke up, asking an important question.

" Is it safe to say that his father is a stand user? "

" Yeah, but I don't know what kind of stand it is or what sort of power it wields. "

" Judging by the way his father reacted to us, I doubt he'll offer us much in the way of assistance. "

" You just leave the talking to me, alright? Hopefully, my words will be able to reach him. "

Polnareff walked away from the group and started heading towards the beach. We let him go and followed Joseph into the house. He knocked at first but he pulled the door open with his hand. Inside it was a small beautiful home. Avdol's father was sitting at a table, but instead of the gray outfit he wore, it was red.

   " Excuse me. "

The man stood from the table and turned towards us. Instead of Avdol's father, it was Avdol.

   " Avdol! "

I ran to him and embraced him in a hug. He hugged me back and, and it was a tight hug. When we pulled out of the hug, a smile decorated my face.

   " I didn't know you were alive! "

" You didn't tell her? Of all people, I would have thought you would tell Y/n that I was alive. "

" Wait you all knew! "

" We did, back in India when we stumbled upon his body he wasn't dead. The bullet only grazed him, and he wasn't seriously hurt. "

" Thanks to you, I wasn't hurt so badly and I was able to recover quickly. "

" You are all jerks! You should have told me that he was alive! Why didn't you all tell Polnareff? He's been having a hard time with Avdol's supposed death. "

" Because if he opened his mouth and said something accidentally Avdol could have gotten hurt while he was recovering. So, we didn't tell him. "

   " I see. He does have a loudmouth. "

We stayed in the little house for the rest of the day and ate a decent-sized meal. We didn't see any sign that Polnareff was coming back so Avdol said he was going to go look for him while we checked the boat. We agreed and walked back to the boat but he wasn't anywhere around.

   " Polnareff's been gone a while. WHere'd he run off to? "

" I don't know Joseph. The last I saw he was heading towards the beach but I guess I was wrong. "

" I couldn't find him up top. " Jotaro said jumping down from the boat.

" Where could he have gone? It's already nightfall and he's nowhere to be seen. " Kakyoin said.

" Do you think he got tangled up in a fight with the enemy? " Jotaro asked.

" It could have happened, but Avdol will find him. Let's keep looking around the shore and see if we see anything. " I suggested.

I started heading down the beach, and I heard the footsteps of someone following behind me. Their steps were slow, and I knew it was Jotaro. If it was Kakyoin he would have been at my side immediately. I slowed down and allowed Jotaro to catch up to me. We started walking along the shore, looking for any signs of the Frenchman.

" I'm not seeing anything. Are you? "

   " No, not a thing. "

" This isn't good. He could be anywhere and under the attack of a stand user. Hopefully, Avdol can find him and help him. "

" Polnareff will be fine. He's strong. "

   " I know, but I'm still worried. "

JoJo hit the back of my head, and I reached my hand to rub it.

" Alright, no need for violence. "

We continued walking along the shore in silence. The stars were shining and the sea waters reflected the moonlight, giving the waves their own stars. It was a beautiful sight, one I would hopefully never forget.

" Hey, JoJo what are you going to do when we get back to Japan? "

" Finish high school, then over on to college. "

" What do you want to do? "

" I'm going to be a marine biologist. Something I've picked up interest in. "

" So, that's why you have all of those books in your room about marine biology. You want to be a biologist. "

" Mhm. What about you? Have you thought about what you're going to do when this is all over? "

" Not really. My main goal is on surviving and then I can think about what I want to do when I live. But I'm not sure. I honestly don't think I could continue my education because the school I went to doesn't exist anymore most likely. Everything I knew is gone. I don't think with this new day and age I could do anything but work in the convenience stores or bakeries around. "

" The old man will find a way. The Speedwagon foundation is on our side so you never know. They might be able to create a whole ID for you. "

" That'll be nice, but after this trip, I want to relax for a while. "

" That's understandable. You've been through a lot with no time to process it all. "

" Yeah, when this is all over I want to just go to a corner and cry. Let everything go. "

Jotaro stopped walking and I stopped as well and looked at him. He looked down at me, and I was curious about what he was doing.

" How can you keep going? "

   " What? "

" How can you keep walking like you are? You've been pulled into things that never involved you, and you've lost too many people in your life. So, why keep going? "

" ...I...I don't really know. I blame my birthmark, but I also blame your family. They're nice people, and they don't deserve all of the things that happen to them. So, if you have a bizarre life then I will too. I never expected this but I would rather have this than a normal life. And I have lost a lot of people. Jonathan, George, Erina, Speedwagon, Baron, Ceaser, Lisa Lisa, and the list continues. "

I turned towards the water, and gazed out at the stars, smiling slightly at them.

" I never even knew my own parents. But...death is a part of life. I'm sad that everyone I knew is gone but I'm also happy that some of them got to live their lives until they were old and gray. Erina, Speedwagon, Lisa Lisa, and Joseph have lived so long. Everyone except Joseph died in a natural way, and I'm glad they died old instead of young like the others did. Jonathan would have been proud of you Jotaro and he would have been proud of me. That much I know. And I know they're all watching over me, and silently taking care of me. They are forever gone, but they will always be in my memories and heart. It hurts because I never got to grieve for those I've lost. "

I turned my head and looked back at Jotaro, smiling as I felt the small tear built up.

" That's why when I come out alive I want to cry. So I can properly grieve for those that I have lost. I never got to grieve because the adventure of the new Joestar relative started, before my grieving could. So, I want to cry when this is over, and be able to breathe and finally let them go. I understand Polnareff in that sense. He can't let go of his sister, and I can't let go of my family. "

I hand was placed on my shoulder. And I knew it was Jotaro's. He pulled me into a hug.

   " Relax. "

That was the only word exchanged between us. It was all I need for y shoulders to fall, feeling the ache of being so tense. I relaxed against him as he held my waist with one of his arms, and the other one stayed at his side with his hand in his pocket. I closed my eyes as I leaned against him, feeling calm.

   " Thank you. "

   " Good grief. "

We stayed in that position for a while before letting go. We walked back to the boat and saw Polnareff shouting at everyone with Avdol behind him. He had a lot of wounds and blood on his body. He looked outraged at the thought of everyone knowing. I walked up to him and Gold Spirit started healing him. He still yelled at everyone about how we all knew.

" Y/n, did you know too!? Please tell me you didn't! "

Polnareff was kneeling on the ground and holding my waist. His face was in my stomach while he held on to me desperately.

   " I actually didn't know. I found out today, as well. "

He still clung to me tightly, and I noticed Star beside me. He looked at me before reaching down towards Polnareff. He pushed on Pol's head, but Polanreff kept his arms around me, not letting go. Star pushed against my stomach and finally, Polnareff let go. Before I could fall into the sand Star PLatinum held my shoulders up and disappeared.

" Cheer up, already Polnareff. Come on. It's almost here! "

   " Wait, what's almost here? There's nothing-"

Before Polnareff could finish his sentence a big submarine emerged from the water. It was about as big as the island we were standing on. I felt my mouth drop open just looking at it. I heard Kakyoin chuckle before closing my mouth.

' He really wanted us to be undetected, didn't he!? Note the sarcasm! '
