Chapter 1 - In the Ditch

The border between Cogenth and the wilderness of Delgen was easy to notice. Surrounded by a thick red dome and heavily armed guards patrolled the border,  a new guard passing through every few seconds. Dawith peered over my shoulder.

"Stay back. I should do this." He commanded at me. I rolled my eyes. "Of course. Then I needn't have come along with you."

Darwith frowned at me. "I foretold that it would have been me to steal the red jewel of strength!" he growled noisily at me, clearly annoyed. A Cogenth guard looked our way. I glared at Darwith. "You idiot. We're suppose to fight the enemies to steal the jewels, not fight over who's going to steal the jewel." I hissed at him. How did I get paired up with Darwith anyways? He's such an arrogant hothead! I turned my mind to another complication. "We better move. That guard is already suspecting this place.". Darwith screwed up his nose in disgust, but he nodded. Arrogant and independent as he was, he at least logical and sensible.

Darwith glanced cautiously around him. We were in a ditch, standing on a narrow ledge. As a healer, Darwith wasn't the nimblest. He, in fact, was rather bulky and muscular. That would make him easy to blend in when we got into Cogenth, but for the time being, it made travelling hard.

Footsteps headed this way. I almost sweared. Darwith looked at me, annoyed and guilty. Luckily, I was prepared for this. There was no way we could escape from the trench. Beyond, it was heavily guarded and there was no place to hide in. Apart from the occasional trench here and there, the dry, crusted piece of land was bare and empty. No water, no cactus, no life. No rocks either. The guards made sure of that so no one could hide behind them. To an untrained eye, Cogenth was impossible to break in.

However, nothing is impossible. There was a way to break in, and that's the trenches. For some unknown reason, Cogenth members hated heights. They could sprint faster than I could across jagged rocks. They could smash rocks. They could build massive rock towers, but they just couldn't look down from high altitude. That was one of their weakness. The guard edged in nearer. He was in the trench with us. He's pretty brave, walking in the ditch, I thought surprised. I beckoned to Darwith. "We got to jump." I whispered to him desperately. Not bothering to see whether he was going to jump, I leaped into the blackness.
