Unspoken Promises | AU
"Ugh, finally!" Skylor shouted, watching as her best friend was running up to her. She crossed her arms and leaned against her yellow locker, a small smirk on her face at seeing her friend out of breath when she arrived in front of her.
Her friend let out a sigh before she stood up straight and cracked her back. "Sorry, I'm late," she apologized.
The redhead chuckled. "What is it this time, Nya?"
Nya groaned, the memories of that morning coming back up again. "He was hogging the bathroom for like an hour."
"Kai really needs to understand that being late to school isn't funny," Skylor commented.
"Yep," Nya agreed. "Just because he graduated last year doesn't mean he magically forgot what high school is like." She rolled her eyes. Then she glared at her best friend. "I have no idea what you see in him, Sky."
"Believe me, neither do I. It is what it is, I guess."
Nya nodded. It was a little weird to know that her brother was together with her best friend. They had been a couple for around a year now, yet Nya was still wondering how they managed to stay together without one murdering the other.
Which would have probably been Skylor murdering Kai.
After they entered their first class for the day, History, they sat down and listened to the teacher as he began talking about the revolutionary war between the serpentine and the old, legendary elemental masters. No one knew what had happened to them after the war, all that was told was that they had settled down and actually created their own families. The thing about that was that their children were never discovered, no one knew if they were even still alive.
Nya liked to listen to everything she could find out about the old elemental masters. She had always had that sweet spot for the history of Ninjago, especially when it was as interesting as that topic. And her teacher, Mr Witters, knew exactly how to make the topic sound more interesting than it might have been.
After what felt like a fast rollercoaster ride, the bell rang, letting all the students go out into their lunch break.
Nya and Skylor walked out together and headed for their lockers. As they were talking, Nya was so caught up that she didn't realize that there was someone running into the direction they were coming from.
"Yeah, and that is exactly why- OW!" Nya fell to the ground with a loud thump after the collision with another student.
She quickly looked at who caused her to fall, only to realize that there was a boy, around her age, sitting on the ground while rubbing his back. As their eyes met, Nya saw how sparkly his face looked in the light that was shining right into his face.
Just as she opened her mouth, he hastily gathered his cellphone and blue backpack and ran past her without saying a word.
"Hey, at least apologize!" Skylor shouted after him, but he didn't seem to respond as he turned around the corner and disappeared from their sight.
"That was so rude! Are you okay?" The redhead asked her friend who picked herself up from the floor.
Nya looked at where the boy had disappeared to and nodded slowly. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's keep going."
After the lunch break was over, the girls' ways parted; Skylor went to Chemistry class, and Nya went to Physics class.
As she walked inside the physics lab, a lot of students were already sitting on their assigned seats. She walked up to her own seat, which was in the far back of the lab, and sat down. She took out her book and pencil case and set them down neatly on her table.
Since the teacher wasn't there already, Nya took out her cellphone and went on different social platforms to pass some time. She didn't have any of her friends in her Physics class, so she liked her loneliness.
As much as she loved her friends, they had a tendency to do anything but listening to the teacher, and since she liked Physics, she wouldn't have wanted to get distracted by them anyway.
As her teacher walked inside, Nya realized he wasn't alone. In fact, the guy she had bumped into, or who had bumped into her, was walking inside behind the teacher.
Nya could see that the boy had to be nervous because he was constantly fiddling with his fingers or the hem of his blue sweatshirt.
The teacher cleared his throat. "Hello students. As you might already see, I'm not alone today. You'll have a new classmate, at least for my classes, who will be joining us from now on." Then he turned to the boy, smiling. "You wanna introduce yourself?"
The teacher's smile slowly faded when the boy only looked at him with sad eyes.
"Right..." the teacher cleared his throat again. "This is Jason Walker. Unfortunately, he will not be able to talk since he is mute." He looked at the class strictly, almost intimidatingly. "I will not tolerate any mocking or anything worse, understood?"
When no one dared to say anything, the teacher nodded. "Good. Jason, you can sit down on the table which is behind Daniel's and next to Nya's."
The new boy looked around the class, only to realize he didn't know any of their names. He looked at the teacher and began to form signs with his hands. The teacher looked intently at his hands and nodded once he was done.
"It's over there," he pointed at the table next to Nya's which was in the left corner. The boy nodded and walked over to his seat and sat down.
For the whole time being, Nya watched the boy. Once she had heard about him being mute, she realized that that was probably the reason why he hadn't apologized for bumping into her in the hall earlier.
Or maybe he was just plain rude, she didn't know yet.
But she was determined to find out.
While the teacher started to talk about their topic and turned to the board, Nya used her chance to turn her head to the side to look at the boy.
He was listening to the teacher with a small hint of sadness in his face. Nya felt extremely bad.
She opened her notebook and slowly ripped out a page, successfully removing it without making any noise. Then she grabbed a pen and wrote,
N: Hey!
She then folded the paper twice before taking a deep breath and leaning over to her side. She managed to put the note on his table without anyone noticing, before sitting back up straight.
She sneakily looked over to him after a few seconds to find him staring at the note. Then he looked back up and looked around to find out who the note was from before his eyes met hers.
Nya smiled at him despite the tingly feeling inside as he smiled back at her. Then she saw him taking a pen of his own and writing something on the note before he put it back on her table. She grabbed it and looked at what was written inside.
J: Hi.
And with that, they used the entire class to send each other notes.
N: How are you?
J: Meh, could be better.
N: Why?
J: I don't know, it's all kinda new to me.
N: Don't worry, you'll get used to it. I'm Nya, by the way.
Nya couldn't help but notice the small smile forming on his lips as he read over her last message.
J: I'm Jason, but you can call me Jay.
N: Like the bird?
She saw him quietly snickering over that. Then he looked back at her and nodded, still laughing. Oh, how much she actually wanted to hear his laugh.
Once the bell rang, the students gathered their stuff and the class started to become very loud because of the laughters and chattering of the students.
Nya and Jay both stood up at the same time and looked at each other. When their eyes met, Nya smiled at him. "I have to go now, it was nice to meet you!" she said as she gave him another, separate note and left the classroom without another word.
Jay watched her until he couldn't see her anymore before he looked down at the paper in his hand. He opened it, and as he read through it, the gears inside his head stopped working.
N: XXX-XXXX-XXX text me :D
Nya walked down the street, the tingly feeling inside still not leaving. She was pretty anxious; would he actually text her? Or did they only have a small conversation in class and that was it?
Nonetheless, Nya reached her and Kai's house and opened the door before she stepped inside. She threw her bag onto the floor and walked inside the living room to see her brother eating a bag of chips while watching TV on the couch.
Sensing her presence, he turned around and smiled. "Hey sis, how was school?"
She looked at him, her face and tone serious. "I need to learn sign language!"
꧁oOoOoOo꧂
A few weeks passed, and Nya and Jay had grown to become friends. Close friends, even. Ever since Jay had texted Nya for the first time the day they had met, they started texting and building a conversation for at least a few hours at once.
They started hanging out in school more often and spent many breaks together. On top of that, they spent many hours together hanging out together after school, too.
Nya knew that Jay had to have been very self conscious about his muteness, yet she was determined to show him otherwise. So, whenever they started to build up conversations that were face to face and not written, Jay tried his best to make it easier for her to understand what he meant without using that much sign language since she wouldn't have understood many things.
Yet little did he know she was learning sign language every day after school as continuously as she could. And for the better wow-effect later on, she hadn't told him about it yet. She wanted to tell him when she felt sure about her knowledge.
Nya was walking down the hallway on a normal Wednesday morning when she suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked to her side to see none other than Jay. He smiled at her as he waved his hand at her.
She smiled back before she threw her arms around his torso. "Hey," she said into his shoulder as she could feel his arms wrap around her body.
Nya could feel some students giving them weird looks, but that was the least of her worries.
After they pulled away, Jay looked at her as he pointed at a random locker before pointing at himself. Nya understood it as him wanting to go to his own locker with her, so she nodded.
Once they reached his locker, Nya leaned against someone else's locker as she was watching him rummaging around in his locker. Then she frowned. "Jay?"
Almost immediately, his head shot into her direction and he formed a silent 'yeah?' with his mouth.
"You never actually told me how you ended up here..." she said, hoping not to sound disrespectfully. "I mean, I genuinely mean no offense, I'm glad you're here, but isn't there special schools for disabled children for a better education?"
Yeah, she was positive that was offending him.
He let out a mute sigh before he pulled out his phone. He quickly opened Google translate and typed in whatever he wanted to say. This was something that he was doing quite often, just to make everything a bit easier.
Once he was done typing, he tapped on the speaker. "I used to be homeschooled, but my parents knew that isolation wasn't the best for me. So they looked for a better school for me to go to, but they couldn't find a good one that was standing out, so they gave me the chance to decide."
Then he started typing again before he let his phone speak for him again. "The teachers here know that I won't be able to speak in class, so they'll only grade me based on my homework and exams, so that's fine too."
Then he smiled sheepishly as he typed once again. "Besides, I'm glad to be here because I got to meet you."
Nya couldn't help but feel a small smile creep up on her lips. "Well, Walker, I'm glad to know you, too," she responded. Then she felt like she needed to tell him something now. Or more like show him something. "I have to show you something, but please don't judge me if it's bad, okay?" she laughed awkwardly.
He rolled his eyes playfully before he typed again. "You know I won't."
Nya took a deep breath before she brought her hands up to the level of her chest. She watched as Jay was waiting for something to happen intently, so she started to form certain signs with her hands and fingers.
"I've been learning sign language," she said, using sign language.
Jay's eyes widened, and he let out a mute gasp. Or she assumed it was a gasp. He hastily threw his phone into his locker before facing her with his whole body.
He also brought his hands in chest level before he formed a "really?" with his hands.
A big smile found its way up to Nya's face as she nodded. "Yeah," she said.
Jay's mouth stayed agape for a bit, his entire body a bit stiff. Nya started to question if he was even still there with her.
She was caught off guard when she was lifted from the ground, and before she could realize what was happening, she was being spun around.
She giggled as she held onto Jay's shoulders tightly, feeling amazing.
Correction, she felt amazing in his arms.
When she was put back on the floor, she sighed. Just as she thought they would part, the unexpected happened.
Or, well, something she had craved for a long while finally happened.
Her eyes were still wide from the initial shock, yet once she regained consciousness, she immediately started to kiss him back. His soft lips moved against hers in a slow rhythm, his hands on her waist. She closed her eyes again and melted against him as she brought her arms around his neck, pulling him further down to her.
When they parted again, they slowly moved their heads away from each other as they kept their eyes on each other's.
Jay was so caught up on Nya's eyes before he shook his head to step out of his trance, and he once again started forming a sentence with his hands. "Would you like to go out with me?"
Nya smiled dreamily at him before bringing her hands up to her chest again. "I thought you'd never ask."
And little did he know, that was one of the first things Nya had learned in sign language.
A/N: All I can say is schools should definitely teach us sign language, peace out!
