Chapter 24
- Tegan's Point of View -
It didn't take long for Tanya to do some sort of damage, without doing any actual hazardous damage. We wanted to get their attention, but we didn't want to cause the people who owned the building any trouble. We were troublemakers, but not bad troublemakers.
"Right," Tanya said, getting up and brushing her hands off.
"That ought a do it. Now we'd better get out of here before we get caught."
I nodded and we both ran out of the room and onto the roof, taking refuge behind the entrance. As I had predicted, the man who we had followed came running up the steps and into the 'Electronics Box' as Tanya liked to call it. However, it did take him longer then I had predicted to fix whatever it was Tanya did and she seemed satisfied with herself.
"I would've had that fixed by now," she said contentedly.
"Oh, well aren't you just a smart little girl," I answered.
She glared at me with an expression that reminded me of me.
"I'll have you know that I am exactly the same height as you."
I didn't have time to answer before the man - I'll call him Phony - came back out and down the stairs. We followed at a quick pace, yet still keeping our distance. In the movies they always make trailing look a lot easier than it really is. I swear, he looked behind him almost a hundred times. It was just a good thing that I had ninja fast reflexes....And that the owner of the building was obsessed with giant potted jungle plants of some sort.
We followed Phony almost to the last floor but he didn't take an elevator. We found out soon enough that it was because the 'secret entrance' (Actually a door with a code on it) was on the back stairwell.
We watched as he jotted down the number code and, unfortunately for us, he was very good at typing.
"How are we gonna get it in?" Tanya whispered.
I quickly shushed her up and as soon as Phony went inside the room I ran up to the door and put my hand in between the door before it closed. Then, holding my breath I slowly peaked through it, realizing that it was just another staircase...A spiral one at that.
We quickly ran down them, finding ourselves in a long metal hallway, lit by ugly lamps. I immediately scanned the wall for security cameras (Cause that's what they do in all the movies) and my eyes landed on one at the very end of the hall. It couldn't see us at the moment, but we wouldn't be able to get through the hallway without being seen.
"Right, Tanya, keep your cap down and hunch yourself over a little bit. There's a camera on the wall over there and if you don't show your face, and if we act casual, then they might not notice us."
I was just hoping that our phony engineers costumes would fool whoever it was watching the cameras. We tried to seem as casual as possible when we walked down the hall, but inside I wanted to run the whole way. I guess we pulled it off pretty well cause no alarms went off when we passed it.
"You know what they say, 'fake it till' you make it'," I told Tanya.
We were just in time to see Phony walking around a corner, but we still had to walk casually cause who knows, there could be more cameras that we didn't know about.
Gosh, I thought. How long can this place possibly be?
My question was quickly answered as we almost ran strait into a room filled with many, many unfriendly faces. We managed to stop before actually walking in, but we had to quickly turn our backs and pretend to be looking at something while a man walked by. Then, if that wasn't exciting enough, we had to walk by a bunch of armed guards...Just hoping that they weren't trigger happy.
Phony was already on the other end of the room, walking down another flight of stairs. We quickly followed. Amazingly, nobody noticed the incredibly small engineers that were just passing by randomly, but hey, maybe it happened all the time there.
"Question," Tanya whispered as we looked down the circular staircase.
"Do you have a plan as soon as we do find out where he's going? I mean, we don't even have reinforcements."
"My plan was to follow your plan!" I told her.
"What? My plan was to follow your plan, but I can't if your plan is to follow my plan!"
"Don't worry," I reassured her.
"I've got this."
And without waiting for an answer, I quickly ran down the stairs, watching as Phony went into the room at the end of the hall.
"So, what have you got?" Tanya whispered once more.
"Get in that room."
"Yes, but what after that?"
"Well I can't make a plan when I don't know what's inside the room! First we just have to get in there, then I'll figure out a plan."
"What if there's an armed guard in there?"
"That's why you're going first," I smiled mischievously.
"Excuse me?"
"You're the one with all the answers!"
"No, I'm the one with the questions. You're the one with the answers. Which means, you are the one who's going in first."
I looked from Tanya to the door and suddenly I felt as though it was staring at me.
"Fine. But if I die I will haunt you forever!"
"I....I can live with that," Tanya answered nonchalantly.
I glared at her for a minute then walked slowly toward the door, turning the handle as slowly as possible, trying not to make any sound. I quietly opened the door a crack and peaked in.
It was a dark room with several glowing computer screens. Phony was bending over another guy who was looking at something on the screen. Really just a bunch of techy stuff that usually gives me a headache.
Suddenly I felt a tap on my shoulder and swung around, my heart nearly leaping into my mouth.
"Whoa! Chill! It's just me!" Ken said quickly as I almost punched him in the face.
"Ken! How did you get here?"
"I followed one of those guys here!"
"And then I followed you," a calm voice said from behind all of us.
"You have got to be kidding me," I wined, being held at gunpoint by Phony.
