Chapter 20
- Tehya's Point of View -
"Wha...? How?" I asked, not understanding how this was even possible.
"They look so...so real."
"Well, sorta." Tegan corrected me, pushing experimentally against the shoulder of...Well...A look alike. com
"They have the worst reflexes I have ever seen."
"That's only because they aren't fully generated yet." The tall man said, flipping through his binder.
"In another hour or so, they will be just as real as you. With personalities, skills, weaknesses, everything. Only they're programmed to respond to our orders without hesitation. They will make the best soldiers this country has ever seen...We had started these experiments almost 17 years ago. The 'guinea pigs' as you might call them, start out as babies, and over the years they evolve. However, the last batch that we created didn't turn out quite as planned. By 3 years old they had almost no fears, and we didn't want that. We wanted them to be as human as possible and the only fear they had was of the future. The plan was to keep them anyway, but a glitch in the system allowed several of them to escape. We've caught all of them...Except for one."
After that he just looked at us, un-naturally creepy.
"That...is SO wrong!" Tegan blurted out before Ken could stop her.
"Excuse me? We're making an undefeatable army to protect your country. Do you not want that?"
"Hah, not if you're cloning. You're government go around telling everyone that they should embrace themselves for who they are...AND THEN YOU GO AROUND CLONING THEM!!! THAT'S EVERY KIND OF WRONG!"
Then - Let's call him Creepy - gives her a cold look.
"It's your government to, you know."
"Any government that clones is no government of mine!" Tegan shot back, running for the fire escape latter and climbing onto the water pipes, making her way to the vent in the ceiling.
"STOP HER!!!" Creepy yelled, but we all reacted in the defense.
Ken punched Creepy in the jaw, sending him flying backwards, and Thea threw a glass bottle filled with some chemical at a charging scientist. Luke punched a guy in the stomach, and both Tanya and me threw a couple other things. Peter (Or Pete, as Tanya calls him) grabbed a metal stick and used it sort of as a metal cudgel, smashing it over one of the guys' head, at the same time telling Rose to stay back.
Meanwhile, at work on the ceiling, Tegan was hanging by her legs on the water pipes, while trying to unscrew the vent with her fingers. She reminded me of a monkey and I was pretty sure I heard her mumble a few not-so-friendly words as she tried to detach the vent cover from the ceiling.
Eventually the cover came crashing to the floor and she climbed into the air ducts. We all followed, climbing as fast as we could in after her. As soon as we were all in I was about to thank Tegan, but Ken flew at her without hesitation.
"What took you so long?" He asked her.
"I stopped for lunch!"
"What did you have, a meatball sub?"
"No. I had a ham and cheese with extra mayo!"
"Hey guys," I tried cutting in, but they ignored me.
"Sounds wonderful."
"Yeah, it was. Maybe next time I'll ask my five star chef to mix a batch up for you!"
"You're the best." Ken grinned sarcastically.
"GUYS!" I yelled.
"WHAT?" They shouted back in unison.
"Which way do we go?"
"Right, there are two choices. Heads, port, tails starboard...Ken, do you have a quarter?"
"What? Why do you-" I began, but Tegan quickly showed me why as soon as Ken handed her the quarter.
She threw it in the air and caught it, slapping it on the back of her left hand and taking her right hand off the top, revealing a silver head.
"Right, port it is!"
Tegan and Ken immediately went to there left, turning down one of the air ducts and crawling down a long stretch before turning right on another corridor.
"How do you know this is the right way?" Tehya asked.
"We don't." Ken answered, glancing at his watch.
"It's 5 p.m. now."
"That is if we're still in the same time zone." Tegan pointed out, stopping abruptly.
Right in front of her was a vent opening and she placed her eye on top of one of the cracks trying to see through it.
"What do you see?" Ken asked.
"Orcs, heading for Dublin!"
"Teg, don't be a smart allic."
"Sorry, I just couldn't resist...There's a room with concrete flooring, and I see a sewer lid."
"Hold on...You're not suggesting we go through the sewer to get out of here?" Thea asked, a bit alarmed.
"Do you have a better idea?" Tegan inquired, not even waiting for an answer before unscrewing the vent cover and lowering herself to the ground.
We all followed suit, landing in what we figured out to be a locker room. Ken immediately bent down and lifted the sewer, peering down into the dark tunnel and then looking up at Tegan.
"Ladies first!" He said, making a sweeping motion toward the ladder.
Tegan squared her shoulders and looked at it for a second before nodding her head and climbing down the tunnel. I was next, then everyone else, Ken coming down last and pulling the sewer lid back on. We ran through the dark tunnels as fast as we could, not wanting to stay in that gross, icky, water much longer. Eventually we saw a small stream of light and ran towards it, finding a ladder and climbing up to where the holes in the lid let the light through.
"I think this is our way out." Tegan said, pushing the lid to the side and climbing out.
I followed not far behind, climbing out onto a street side café outside dining area, to the many surprised expressions of customers.
"Where are we?" I asked Tegan, who tapped me on the shoulder, beckoning me to turn around.
That was when I saw it. A giant white building, framed by the evening light.
"We're in D.C."
